Abstract
A hidden hinge structure may be injection molded. The hidden hinge structure has a hinge pin attached to a first part and a hook member that is affixed to a second part. A portion of a frontward one of the first and second parts covers the hinge. The hidden hinge may be used to connect the lid and base of a utility enclosure or housing.
Claims (28)
1. A hidden hinge hingedly connecting first and second parts, the hidden hinge comprising:
a hinge pin attached to the first part;
a hook member connected to the second part, the hook member hooked around the hinge pin, the hook member having a bight located on a side of the pin away from the second part; and, a hiding portion extending in front of the pin from a frontward one of the first and second parts.

2. A hidden hinge according to claim 1 wherein an outer part of the hiding portion extends rearwardly to cover a side of the pin.
3. A hidden hinge according to any one of claims 1 to 2 wherein the hook member is formed integrally with the second part.
4. A hidden hinge according to any one of claims 1 to 2 wherein the hook member is on a piece separate from the second part which piece is affixed to the second part.
5. A hidden hinge according to any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein the hook member has an opening smaller than a width of the pin such that the pin snaps into place in the opening of the hook member.
6. A hidden hinge according to any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the first part is frontward of the second part.
7. A hidden hinge according to claim 6 wherein the hook is formed integrally with the second part.
8. A hidden hinge according to any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the second part is frontward of the first part.
9. A hidden hinge according to claim 8 wherein at least one of the hiding portion and the hook member is on a piece separate from the second part which piece is affixed to the second part.
10. A hidden hinge connecting first and second parts, the hidden hinge comprising:
a hinge pin attached to the first part;
a hook member distinct from the second part, the hook member having first and second ends, the first end comprising a hook for engaging the hinge pin and the second end affixed to the second part;
wherein a portion of the second part extends over the hinge pin.

wherein a portion of the second part extends over the hinge pin.
11. A hidden hinge according to claim 10 wherein the second end of the hook member is affixed within a socket on the second part.
12. A hidden hinge according to claim 11 wherein the hook member comprises a projection projecting from the second end, and the projection projects into one of an aperture in a wall of the socket and an indent in the wall of the socket.
13. A hidden hinge according to any one of claims 10 to 12 wherein the first part comprises a base of a box and the second part comprises a lid of the box.
14. A hidden hinge according to any one of claims 10 to 13 wherein the hook is offset from the second end of the hook member.
15. A hidden hinge according to any one of claims 13 to 14 wherein the base comprises an edge and a central portion of the hook member engages the edge of the base when the lid is in a closed configuration.
16. A hidden hinge according to any one of claims 10 to 15 comprising a plurality of hinge pins axially aligned with and spaced apart from one another.
17. A hidden hinge according to claim 16 wherein the hinge pins are molded into a flange extending from the edge of the first part.
18. A hidden hinge according to any one of claims 10 to 17 wherein the hook is U-shaped.
19. A hidden hinge according to any one of claims 10 to 18 wherein the hook extends around the hinge pin for at least 180 degrees.
20. A hidden hinge according to any one of claims 10 to 19 wherein the hook has an opening smaller than a width of the pin and the hook snaps into place around the pin.
21. A hidden hinge according to any one of claims 10 to 20 wherein the portion of the second part comprises a flange projecting outwardly from a central portion of the second part.
22. A hidden hinge according to claim 21 wherein the flange is bent and extends around two sides of the hinge pin.
23. A hidden hinge according to any one of claims 21 to 22 wherein the flange extends circumferentially around at least a portion of the hook.
24. A hidden hinge according to any one of claims 21 to 23 wherein the socket is in the central portion of the lid.
25. An enclosure comprising a base and a lid and incorporating a hinge according to claim 10 hingedly connecting the base and lid, wherein the portion of the second part extending over the hinge pin comprises a flange extending from the lid.
26. An enclosure according to claim 25 wherein the flange extends outwardly and rearwardly to cover the hinge pin from both front and side directions.
27. A hidden hinge connecting first and second parts, the hidden hinge comprising:
a hinge pin attached to the first part;
a hook member connected to the second part, the hook member comprising a hook engaging the hinge pin; and a flange extending from the first part to cover a front side of the hinge pin.

28. A hidden hinge according to claim 27 wherein the flange extends outwardly and rearwardly to cover the hinge pin from both front and side directions.
