Abstract
Phosphate ester based functional fluids containing novel anti-erosion additives provides enhanced results in erosion control.
Claims (4)
1 A hydraulic fluid composition comprising:
a phosphate ester basestock wherein the basestock comprises 0 to 100 weight percent of trialkyl phosphates;
0 to 75 weight percent of dialkyl aryl phosphates;
0 to 30 weight percent of alkyl diaryl phosphates;
0 to 20 weight percent of alkylated triaryl phosphates;
wherein the alkyl groups have 4 to 5 carbon atoms;
a salt or mixture of salts represented by the formula where M is potassium and R is a perfluorinated linear or branched hydrocarbyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms;
a poly alkylacrylate or methacrylate viscosity index improver wherein at least 95 wt%
of viscosity index improver has a molecule weight between 50,000 and 900,000;
and, an acid scavenger represented by the formula where R1 is H or a C1 to C4 alkyl group, x is 1 or 2, y is an integer of 1 to 4, and R2 is a C1 to C4 alkyl group or a phenyl group wherein said composition has improved erosion resistance.

wherein the alkyl groups have 4 to 5 carbon atoms;
a salt or mixture of salts represented by the formula where M is potassium and R is a perfluorinated linear or branched hydrocarbyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms;
a poly alkylacrylate or methacrylate viscosity index improver wherein at least 95 wt%
of viscosity index improver has a molecule weight between 50,000 and 900,000;
and, an acid scavenger represented by the formula where R1 is H or a C1 to C4 alkyl group, x is 1 or 2, y is an integer of 1 to 4, and R2 is a C1 to C4 alkyl group or a phenyl group wherein said composition has improved erosion resistance.
2 The composition of claim 1 wherein the basestock comprises 70 to 75 wt%
trialkyl phosphate and 10 to 12 wt% triaryl phosphates.

3 The composition of claim 1 wherein the salt or mixture of salts comprises 0.01 wt%
to 0.5 wt% of the basestock and the acid scavenger comprises 1 to 10 wt% of the basestock.

4 In the method of transmitting power in hydraulic system by use of phosphate ester fluids, the improvement which comprises using as the fluid a composition according to claim 1, 2 or 3.
