Abstract
A method of precluding a copyrighted work from being played in an unauthorized manner comprises encoding the work so as to disable it from playing in conventional players; distributing the encoded work; configuring a decoding player to accept the encoded work and to play the encoded work according to a time based key code, such that the encoded work is playable only when permitted by the time based key code; providing a decoding algorithm for decoding the encoded work; receiving a request for a time based key code; and providing the time based key code to the decoding player such that, subsequent to the time based key code being received by the decoding player, and subsequent to the work being introduced to the decoding player for playing, the decoding player is operable to play the encoded works according to the time based key code.
Claims (22)
1. A method of precluding a copyrighted work from being played in an unauthorized manner, said method comprising the steps of:
encoding said copyrighted work so as to disable it from playing in conventional players;
distributing the encoded copyrighted work;
configuring a decoding player to accept said encoded copyrighted work;
configuring said decoding player to play said encoded copyrighted work according to a time based key code, such that said encoded copyrighted work is playable only when permitted by said time based key code;
providing a decoding algorithm to a decoding player, said decoding algorithm for decoding said encoded copyrighted work, to thereby produce a human-recognizable output;
receiving a request for a time based key code to be provided to said decoding player; and, providing said time based key code for receipt by said decoding player such that, subsequent to said time based key code being received by said decoding player, and subsequent to said copyrighted work being introduced to said decoding player for playing, said decoding player is operable to play said encoded copyrighted work according to said time based key code.

configuring a decoding player to accept said encoded copyrighted work;
configuring said decoding player to play said encoded copyrighted work according to a time based key code, such that said encoded copyrighted work is playable only when permitted by said time based key code;
providing a decoding algorithm to a decoding player, said decoding algorithm for decoding said encoded copyrighted work, to thereby produce a human-recognizable output;
receiving a request for a time based key code to be provided to said decoding player; and, providing said time based key code for receipt by said decoding player such that, subsequent to said time based key code being received by said decoding player, and subsequent to said copyrighted work being introduced to said decoding player for playing, said decoding player is operable to play said encoded copyrighted work according to said time based key code.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein said copyrighted work is in a digital format.
3. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of encoding said copyrighted work comprises placing digital data within said encoded copyrighted work.
4. The method of claim 3, wherein said digital data are related to said encoded copyrighted work.
5. The method of claim 4, wherein said digital data are placed within the encoded copyrighted work in a plurality of locations.
6. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of distributing encoded copyright works is performed by means of the Internet.
7 . The method of claim 1, wherein the step of distributing encoded copyright works is performed by means of compact discs.
8. The method of claim 1, wherein said request for a time based key code includes payment for said time based key code.
9. The method of claim 1, wherein said time based key code is based on the duration of playing time of said copyrighted work.
10. The method of claim 1, wherein said time based key code is based on a calendar period of time.
11. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of permitting a preview of said encoded copyrighted work prior to playing it.
12. A system for precluding a copyrighted work from being played in an unauthorized manner, said system comprising:
a copyrighted work encoded so as to disable it from playing in conventional players, wherein the encoded copyrighted work is distributed for play;
a time based key code generated by a copyright overseer;
and, a decoding player including a decoding algorithm for decoding said encoded copyrighted work, to thereby produce a human-recognizable output from said encoded copyrighted work, and means responsive to said time based key code, such that said encoded copyrighted work is playable only when permitted by said time based key code;
wherein, subsequent to said time based key code being received by said decoding player, and subsequent to said copyrighted work being introduced to said decoding player for playing, said decoding player is operable to play said encoded copyrighted work according to said time based key code.

and, a decoding player including a decoding algorithm for decoding said encoded copyrighted work, to thereby produce a human-recognizable output from said encoded copyrighted work, and means responsive to said time based key code, such that said encoded copyrighted work is playable only when permitted by said time based key code;
wherein, subsequent to said time based key code being received by said decoding player, and subsequent to said copyrighted work being introduced to said decoding player for playing, said decoding player is operable to play said encoded copyrighted work according to said time based key code.
13. The system of claim 12, wherein said copyrighted work is in a digital format.
14. The system of claim 12, wherein said copyrighted work is coded by means of digital data placed within said encoded copyrighted work.
15. The system of claim 14, wherein said digital data are related to said encoded copyrighted work.
16. The system of claim 15, wherein said digital data are placed within the encoded copyrighted work in a plurality of locations.
17. The system of claim 12, wherein said time based key code is generated in response to payment for said time based key code.
18. The system of claim 12, wherein said time based key code is based on the duration of playing time of said copyrighted work.
19. The system of claim 12, wherein said time based key code is based on a calendar period of time.
20. The system of claim 12, further comprising means of permitting a preview of said encoded copyrighted work prior to playing it.
21. A decoding player for playing a copyrighted work in an authorized manner, said decoding player comprising:
means to play said encoded copyrighted work, said encoded copyrighted work, to thereby produce a human-recognizable output from said encoded copyrighted work;
means responsive to a time based key code, such that said encoded copyrighted work is playable only when permitted by said time based key code;
wherein, subsequent to said time based key code being received by said decoding player, and subsequent to said copyrighted work being introduced to said decoding player for playing, said decoding player is operable to play said encoded copyrighted work according to said time based key code.

wherein, subsequent to said time based key code being received by said decoding player, and subsequent to said copyrighted work being introduced to said decoding player for playing, said decoding player is operable to play said encoded copyrighted work according to said time based key code.
22. The player of claim 20, wherein said time base key code is stored on a removable medium.
