Abstract

This fork lift tine receiving member was developed for use with a bulk bag having underlying straps. The fork lift tine receiving member includes a tubular body having a peripheral sidewall. There is at least one opening in the sidewall. At least one flap extends into the opening. The flap is integrally formed from and co-planar with the sidewall. The flap has a first side edge and a second side edge. The opening has a first slotted portion extending through the sidewall adjacent the first side edge and a second slotted portion extending through the sidewall adjacent the second side edge. When in use, a strap is extends through the first slotted portion, under the flap and through the second slotted portion.

Description

TITIaE OF THE INVENTION:
Fork Lift Tine Receiving Member For Use With A Bulk Bag Having Underlying Straps FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a fork lift tine receiving member for a bulk bag BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Bulk bags are used to transport a wide variety of products. In order to facilitate movement of the bulk bags using a fork lift, tubular fork lift tine receiving members are secured to a bottom of the bulk bag. United States Patents 6,213,305 and 6,467,625 are examples of fork lift tine receiving members which are inserted into sleeves extending along a bottom of the bulk bag. The industry has been slow to adopt fork lift tine receiving members, due primarily to the cost that such a feature adds to the price of a bulk bag. There has, therefore, been an effort made to come up with lower cost fork lift tine receiving members and less expensive ways to secure them to a bulk bag.
SUN.~1A,RY OF THE INVENTION
What is required is a fork lift tine receiving member which can be used with a bulk bag having underlying straps.
According to the present invention there is provided a fork lift tine receiving member which was developed for use with a bulk bag having underlying straps.
The fork lift tine receiving member, as described above, has a flap configuration to retain the underlying straps of the bulk bag. This is a simple and relatively inexpensive configuration.
In the preferred embodiment which will hereinafter be further described, the tubular body is rectangular in cross-section and has an opening on three of four sides. The openings are circumferentially aligned about the tubular body, so that the strap can be wrapped around and secured on three sides.
Two different flap configurations will be illustrated.
A first configuration has a single flap. A second configuration has two flaps extending in opposed relation across the opening.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
These and other features of the invention will become more apparent from the following description in which reference is made to the appended drawings, the drawings are for the purpose of illustration only and are not intended to in any way limit the scope of the invention to the particular embodiment or embodiments shown, wherein:
THE FIGURE 1s a perspective view of a fork lift tine receiving member constructed in accordance with the teachings of the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED IEI~ODIME13T
The preferred embodiment, a fork lift tine receiving member generally identified by reference numeral 10, will now be described with reference to THE FIGtCIRE~
Structure and Relationship of Parts:
Fork lift tine receiving member 10 was developed for use with a bulk bag having underlying sc=raps. In THE FIGURE.
only underlying straps 12 have been illustrated. Fork lift tine receiving member 10 includes a tvabular body 14 having a peripheral sidewall 16 with several openings 18. It will be understood that a tubular body in rectangular form with three circumferentially aligned openings has been chosen for the purpose of illustration. A flap 20 exaends into each opening 18. Each flap 20 has a first edge 22 and a second edge 24.
Each opening 18 has a first slotted ~>ortion 26 and a second slotted portion 28. Strap 12 extends into each opening 18 by passing through each first slotted portion 26, underneath each corresponding flap 20 and back through each corresponding second slotted portion 28. In the illustrated embodiment, has been selected to illustrate that either single flap configurations 30 and dual flap configurations 32 are positioned in peripheral sidewall :16.
Operation:
The use and operation of fork lift tine receiving member 10 will now be described with reference to THE FIGURE. An operator of fork lift tine receiving member 10, when used in conjunction with a bulk bag having underlying straps, positions fork lift tine receiving member 10 such that straps 12 are aligned with selected opening: 18. where straps 12 have a free end, they are " threaded" through first slotted portion 26, under flap 20 and back through second slotted portion 28. Where straps 12 are an endless loop, they are slid under flap 20 in opening 18 so 'that they strap extends from first slot portion 26 and second slotted portion 28.
Depending upon the number and configuration of straps 12 and openings 18, the bulk bag will be .secured for moving and transport. When fork lift tine receiving member 10 is no longer required, straps 12 are removed in a similar, correspondingly reverse procedure.
In this patent document, the woz:d "comprising" is used in its non-limiting sense to mean that items following the word are included, but items not specifically mentioned are not excluded. A reference to an element by the indefinite article "a'° does not exclude the possibility that more than one of the element is present, unless the context clearly requires that there be one and only one of the elements.
It will be apparent to one skilled in the art that modifications may be made to the illustrated embodiment without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined in the Claims.
