Description
RESIDENTIAL CABLE FAILURE DEVICE
Field of the invention This residential cable failure device will be used in the garage door industry.
Summary of the invention Presently, the breaking of cable sustaining a garage door can result in the free falling of the door and that can be possibly dangerous for human beings. This invention is used to prevent the free fall of the door when one or two door l0 supporting cables break. This is achieved by the use of a knife which engages the track when a cable breaks. Free fall of the door is thereby stopped.
Description of a preferred embodiment:
There is at least one system that resolves the problem of a falling door when the cable breaks but it is a heavy duty system for commercial doors. The present invention is directed to residential applications, and has as its goal a simple mechanism.
It is well known that a garage door needs to have a counterbalancing system in

Description of a preferred embodiment:
There is at least one system that resolves the problem of a falling door when the cable breaks but it is a heavy duty system for commercial doors. The present invention is directed to residential applications, and has as its goal a simple mechanism.
It is well known that a garage door needs to have a counterbalancing system in
2 0 order to easily open and close it. That counterbalancing is achieved by usage of either one or many torsion springs. That spring is fixed to two plugs: the first one being a winding plug and the other one a stationary plug. The winding plug is fixed on the shaft and the stationary plug is fixed on a bearing plate. To transmit the force to the door, there are two drums on the shaft on which cables 2 5 are installed. These cables are fixed on two bottom brackets (one on each side) at the last panel of the door.
Referring now to Figures 1 and 2, there is shown an overview of the different components.
Reference numeral 1 is the special knife, 2 is a roller, 3 is a bottom support bracket, 4 is the cable door and 5 is an extension spring.
During the normal operation of the door, the system is in armed position (not engaged) Figures 3 and 4). The roller is free in the track. That state is maintained because the force (a) is stronger than force (b). The force (a) is the tension in the cable coming from the counterbalancing spring and the force (b) is caused by the extension spring which is part of the device. When the cable breaks, the force (a) becomes near zero so by the effect of the force (b), the 1 o specially designed knife engages into the track (Figures 5 and 6) and thereby prevents the door from falling. When the system is activated, it is then still possible to lift the door, but the device must be reset in order to close the door.
Figure 7 gives an overview on how the special knife engages the track.
