Abstract

A bearing assembly for a mud motor is provided. The bearing assembly includes a mandrel deployed substantially coaxially in a bearing housing, first and second oil filled chambers between the housing and the mandrel, first and second bearing stacks deployed about the mandrel in the second oil filled chamber, and first, second, and third sealing ring carriers. The first sealing ring carrier is deployed between the first and second oil filled chambers, the second sealing ring carrier is deployed between the first oil filled chamber and drilling fluid interior to the housing, and the third sealing ring carrier is deployed between the second oil filled chamber and drilling fluid exterior to the housing. Embodiments of this invention advantageously improve axial and radial load bearing performance and reduce maintenance requirements due to an improved sealing arrangement.

Claims (7)

1. A bearing assembly for a mud motor, the bearing assembly comprising:
a housing having a cylindrical axis;
a mandrel, an upper end of which is deployed substantially coaxially in the housing and disposed to rotate about the cylindrical axis relative to the housing;
first and second chambers between the housing and the upper end of the mandrel, the chambers disposed to be filled with oil, the chambers further disposed such that, when the chambers are filled with oil, a fluid pressure of oil in the first chamber is greater than a fluid pressure of oil in the second chamber;
first and second bearing stacks deployed about the upper end of the mandrel in the second chamber;
first, second, and third sealing ring carriers, the first sealing ring carrier being deployed between the first and second chambers, the second sealing ring carrier being deployed between the first chamber and drilling fluid interior to the housing, and the third sealing ring carrier being deployed between the second chamber and drilling fluid exterior to the housing.
2. The bearing assembly of claim 1, wherein:
a lower end of the mandrel includes a threaded box end suitable for receiving a threaded pin end of a drill bit;
the third sealing ring carrier is deployed proximate to the lower end of the mandrel;
the second sealing ring carrier is deployed distal from the lower end of the mandrel; and the bearing assembly further includes a support ring deployed in the second chamber between the third sealing ring carrier and the first bearing stack, the support ring being disposed to support radial loads on the lower end of the mandrel.
3. The bearing assembly of claim 1, wherein the second sealing ring carrier is configured to displace along the longitudinal axis to substantially balance fluid pressure between drilling fluid interior to the housing and oil in the first chamber.
4. The bearing assembly of claim 1, wherein:
a fluid pressure of oil in the first chamber is substantially equal to a fluid pressure of drilling fluid interior to the housing; and
5 a fluid pressure of oil in the second chamber is substantially equal to a fluid pressure of drilling fluid exterior to the housing.

5. The bearing assembly of claim 1, wherein each of the first and second bearing stacks includes at least one tapered bearing.
6. The bearing assembly of claim 1, wherein:
the first bearing stack is deployed between a shoulder on an exterior surface of the upper end of the mandrel and a first shoulder on an interior surface of the housing, the first bearing stack being disposed to support an axial force urging the upper end of the mandrel deeper into the housing; and the second bearing stack is deployed between a second shoulder on the interior surface of the housing and a preload sleeve deployed about the upper end of the mandrel in the second chamber, the second bearing stack being disposed to support an axial force urging the upper end of the mandrel out of the housing.
7. The bearing assembly of claim l, further comprising:

a spring pack and a preload spacer deployed between the first and second bearing stacks; and a preload sleeve and a seal sleeve deployed about the upper end of the mandrel and between the second bearing stack and a preload nut, the first and second sealing ring carriers being deployed about the seal sleeve, the preload nut being deployed distal from a lower end of the mandrel.
