Abstract

Description
JUVENILE HIGH CHAIR TRAY
BACKGROUND AND SUMMARY
The present disclosure relates to a tray, and particularly to a tray that is attachable to and detachable from a juvenile high chair. More particularly, the present disclosure relates to a juvenile high chair tray used during mealtime and during playtime.
Trays that are attachable to and detachable from high chairs are well known. Such trays provide a surface on which a child's meals are placed during mealtime. Some conventional high chair trays have features such as towel holders or receptacles that are configured to hold cups, bowls, juice boxes, spoons, and the like.
Such features typically are located out of the reach of the child being fed.
Toys are sometimes placed on the tray of the high chair to occupy a child's attention during playtime. It is not uncommon for children to drop the toys off of the tray, much to their dissatisfaction.
According to this disclosure, a tray assembly is provided for use with a juvenile high chair. The tray assembly comprises a main tray adapted to couple to the high chair and an entertainment unit coupled to the main tray for pivoting movement between a first position and a second position. The entertainment unit includes a member pivotably coupled to the main tray and a toy coupled to the member. The toy is accessible to a child seated on the high chair when the entertainment unit is in the first position and the toy is positioned further away from the child seated on the high chair when the entertainment unit is in the second position.
In an illustrative embodiment, the member is formed to include a feature, such as a receptacle configured to receive, for example, a cup, bottle, glass or bowl. In addition, the main tray comprises a horizontal main tray surface and a perimeter rim lying around the tray surface. The perimeter rim includes a first stop and a second stop. The member engages the first and second stops when the entertainment unit is in the first and second positions, respectively.
According to the illustrative embodiment, two entertainment units are coupled to the main tray at respective front corner regions of the main tray.
BACKGROUND AND SUMMARY
The present disclosure relates to a tray, and particularly to a tray that is attachable to and detachable from a juvenile high chair. More particularly, the present disclosure relates to a juvenile high chair tray used during mealtime and during playtime.
Trays that are attachable to and detachable from high chairs are well known. Such trays provide a surface on which a child's meals are placed during mealtime. Some conventional high chair trays have features such as towel holders or receptacles that are configured to hold cups, bowls, juice boxes, spoons, and the like.
Such features typically are located out of the reach of the child being fed.
Toys are sometimes placed on the tray of the high chair to occupy a child's attention during playtime. It is not uncommon for children to drop the toys off of the tray, much to their dissatisfaction.
According to this disclosure, a tray assembly is provided for use with a juvenile high chair. The tray assembly comprises a main tray adapted to couple to the high chair and an entertainment unit coupled to the main tray for pivoting movement between a first position and a second position. The entertainment unit includes a member pivotably coupled to the main tray and a toy coupled to the member. The toy is accessible to a child seated on the high chair when the entertainment unit is in the first position and the toy is positioned further away from the child seated on the high chair when the entertainment unit is in the second position.
In an illustrative embodiment, the member is formed to include a feature, such as a receptacle configured to receive, for example, a cup, bottle, glass or bowl. In addition, the main tray comprises a horizontal main tray surface and a perimeter rim lying around the tray surface. The perimeter rim includes a first stop and a second stop. The member engages the first and second stops when the entertainment unit is in the first and second positions, respectively.
According to the illustrative embodiment, two entertainment units are coupled to the main tray at respective front corner regions of the main tray.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
A tray assembly 10 includes a main tray 12 adapted to be mounted on a juvenile high chair 14 and a pair of entertainment units 16 coupled to main tray 12 for pivoting movement between respective first positions shown, for example, in Fig. 1 and respective second positions shown, for example, in Fig. 2. Each entertainment unit 16 includes a member 18 and a toy 20 coupled to the respective member 18.
When entertainment units 16 are in their respective first positions, toys 20 are accessible to a child (not shown) seated on a seat 22 of high chair 14 and when entertainment units 16 are in their respective second positions, toys 20 are positioned further away from the child seated on seat 22 of high chair 14. The terms "child" and "juvenile" are used interchangeably in this disclosure.
A first surface 24 of each member 18 is formed to include a feature 26 which is adapted to receive items that are associated with feeding a child seated in high chair 14. In the illustrative embodiment, the features formed in surfaces comprise receptacles (hereinafter referred to as "receptacles 26") that are sized and configured to receive cups. It is within the scope of this disclosure to size and configure receptacles 26 to receive bowls, bottles, juice boxes, feeding utensils, or the like. In some embodiments, more than one receptacle 26 is formed in each surface 24.
When entertainment units 16 are in the second positions, surfaces 24 face upwardly permitting caregivers to place items in receptacles 26 as shown in Fig. 2. The items placed in receptacles 26 when units 16 are in the second positions are positioned generally out of the reach of the child seated in high chair 14.
When a child is seated in high chair 14 during playtime, a caregiver moves entertainment units 16 to the respective first positions so that the child seated in high chair 14 has access to and can play with toys 20. During mealtime, the caregiver flips entertainment units 16 to the respective second positions so that toys 20 are positioned away from the child and so that receptacles 26 are exposed for use.
Items associated with feeding the child can then be placed in receptacles 26.
When mealtime is over and the items are removed from receptacles 26, the caregiver can then flip entertainment units 16 back to the respective first positions so that the child, once again, can play with toys 20.
Units 16 pivot relative to main tray 12 about respective pivot axes 28, shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Members 18 each include first or outer ends 30 that are distal from respective axes 28. Toys 20 are coupled to members 18 adjacent ends 30.
Toy 20 of one of units 16 is coupled to the associated member 18 for rotation about an axis 32 that is orthogonal to the associated axis 28 as shown in Fig. 3. Toy 20 of the other of units 16 is coupled to the associated member 18 for rotation about an axis 34 that is parallel with the associated axis 28 as also shown in Fig. 3. With regard to this latter unit 16, member 18 comprises a pair of arms 38 that define a toy-receiving space 40 therebetween.
The toy 20 received in space 40 includes three members 42, each of which is rotatable independently about axis 34 as suggested in Figs. 3-5. Each member 42 comprises a central cylinder 44 that receives a pivot pin (not shown) extending between arms 38 and a pair of plates 46 extending away from cylinder 44.
Each of plates 46 comprises indicia (not shown) such as letters of the alphabet, numbers, images of animals, images of food items, or the like. In some embodiments, plates 46 include decals on which the indicia is printed, and, in other embodiments, the indicia is formed integrally with plates 46. The other of illustrative toys 20 includes a backing plate 48 and a transparent dome 50 coupled to backing plate 50 as shown in Fig. 2. Dome 50 houses a plurality of loose objects (not shown) that move within dome 50 to make noise as backing plate 48 and dome 50 are spun about axis 32. It is within the scope of this disclosure for other types of toys, such as cartoon characters, action figures, squeezable noise makers, buttons, levers, etc., or combinations of these to be coupled to members 18 of units 16.
Main tray 12 comprises a central, main tray surface 52 and a perimeter rim 54 lying around tray surface 32 as shown best in Fig. 3. Main tray surface 52 is substantially horizontal and faces upwardly. Perimeter rim 54 includes an interior wall 56 extending upwardly from surface 52 around the periphery thereof.
Surface 52 cooperates with interior wall 56 to provide main tray 12 with a large recess 58. Items (not shown) such as food containers, drink containers, toys, and the like are supported on surface 52 within recess 58. Interior wall 56 serves as a barrier to inhibit the items supported on surface 52 from falling off of main tray 12.
S Perimeter rim 54 comprises a top wall 60 that extends outwardly from interior wall 56 away from recess 58 as shown in Fig. 3. Perimeter rim 54 further comprises an exterior wall 62 extending generally downwardly from top wall 62 although, as will be described in further detail below, the portion of exterior wall 62 at the front of tray assembly 10 is formed to include various features that may be used by a caregiver when feeding a child seated in high chair 14.
In the illustrative embodiment of main tray 12, walls 56, 60, 62 of perimeter rim 54 and a horizontal wall 53 that provides horizontal tray surface 52 are molded as a monolithic piece and have substantially uniform thickness.
However, it is within the scope of this disclosure for main tray 12 to be comprised of separate wall pieces that couple together and for the separate wall pieces to have varying thicknesses or thickness that are different than other wall pieces. In addition, it is within the scope of this disclosure for main tray 12 to be comprised of a monolithic piece of material that has varying thickness.
Perimeter rim 54 provides the outer boundary of main tray 12 and thus, has a front portion 64, a rear portion 66, and a pair of side potions 68 extending between front portion 64 and rear portion 66. Side portions 68 cooperate with rear portion 66 to define a pair of rear corner regions 70 of tray 12 and cooperate with front portion 68 to define a pair of front corner regions 72 of tray 12. The rear portion 66 of perimeter rim 54 is slightly concave to accommodate the chest or abdomen of a child seated in high chair 14. The part of exterior wall 62 associated with rear portion 66 extends substantially vertically downwardly from the part of top wall 60 that is associated with rear portion 66.
Perimeter rim 54 includes a set of four vertical walls 74, two of which are located at one of the front corner regions 72 of perimeter rim 54 and two of which are located at the other of the front corner regions 72 of perimeter rim 54 as shown in Fig. 3. Each vertical wall 74 extends substantially horizontally away from interior wall 56 and away from recess 58. In addition, each vertical wall 74 has a lower edge 73 that is substantially coplanar with a bottom surface 55 of horizontal wall 53, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and a slightly convex upper edge 75, shown in Fig. 3, that tapers downwardly from top wall 60 toward lower edge 73. Each vertical wall 74, therefore, has a somewhat pointed tip 77 where edges 73, 75 meet.
The parts of exterior wall 62 associated with side portions 68 extend substantially vertically downwardly from top wall 60 at the associated rear corner regions 70 of perimeter rim 54 and flare outwardly and downwardly from top wall 60 so as to follow the contour of associated upper edges 75 of respective vertical walls 74 at the associated front corner regions 72 of perimeter rim 54. Thus, going in the direction from the rear of tray 12 to the front of tray 12, the parts of exterior wall 62 associated with side portions 68 of perimeter rim 54 transition smoothly from extending substantially vertically downwardly from top wall 60 to flaring outwardly and downwardly from top wall 60 as shown in Fig. 3.
The part of exterior wall 62 associated with front portion 64 of perimeter rim 54 extends side-to-side between an associated pair of vertical walls 74 as shown in Fig. 3. The front portion of exterior wall 62 comprises a substantially horizontal platform wall 76, a first vertical wall 78 extending between top wall 60 and platform wall 76, and a second vertical wall 80 extending downwardly from platform wall 76 at the front thereof. Thus, walls 60, 76, 78, 80 form a somewhat stepped configuration at the front of main tray 12. The part of exterior wall 62 associated with front portion 64 also comprises a pair of sloping ridge walls 82 that are appended to and follow the contour of edges 75 of the associated vertical walls 74. In addition, the part of exterior wall 62 associated with front portion 64 comprises a pair of end walls 84 extending generally vertically between respective ridge walls 76 and platform wall 76.
Platform wall 76 is formed to include one or more features that may be used by the caregiver when feeding the child seated in high chair 14. The features formed in illustrative platform wall 78 comprise a central aperture 86, a juice box receptacle 88 on one side of aperture 86, and a cup receptacle 90 on the other side of aperture 86 as shown best in Fig. 3. Forming aperture 86 in platform wall 78 provides perimeter rim 54 with a bar 92 on which towels, wash cloths, and the like can be hung. An aperture wall 94 hangs downwardly from platform wall 78 and outlines _7_ aperture 86. In the illustrative embodiment, a bottom edge 96 of exterior wall 62 is substantially coplanar with bottom surface 55 of wall 53, as is a bottom edge 98 of aperture wall 94. In alternative embodiments, some or all of edges 96, 98 may lie above or below bottom surface 55 of wall 53. Because features 86, 88, 90, 92 are formed in platform wall 78, which is situated at the front of main tray 12, the items placed on platform wall 78 are positioned generally out of the reach of the child seated on high chair 14.
A pair of unit-receiving spaces 100 are defined between respective pairs of vertical walls 74 at front corner regions 72 of perimeter rim 54 as shown in Fig. 3. In addition, interior wall 56 is formed to include a pair of notches 110 that are open at top wall 60 and that communicate with unit-receiving spaces 100. Main tray 12 includes a pair of inclined walls 112, each of which slopes downwardly and outwardly from notches 110 and each of which extends laterally between associated pairs of vertical walls 74. Each of inclined walls 112 includes an inclined surface 114 and a lower edge 116 as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 with regard to one of walls 112.
The inboard pair of vertical walls 74 are each formed to include a pair of slots 118 that are open at lower edge 73 and that extend vertically upwardly therefrom as shown best in Fig. 3 with regard to one of the inboard walls.
Each slot 118 terminates at a respective upper edge 119 which is located between the associated edges 73 , 75 of vertical walls 74. Each of the inboard vertical walls 74, therefore, comprises a flexible finger 120 defined between the associated pair of slots 118.
Flexible fingers 120 each have a lower tip 122 that is positioned to lie below the associated lower edge 73. In addition, each flexible finger 120 is formed to include a pivot aperture 124. Each of the outboard vertical walls 74 is formed to include a pivot aperture 125 that is aligned with a companion aperture 124. The inboard vertical walls 74 are each formed to include a detent-receiving aperture 126, which is positioned generally above one of slots 118, and a detent-receiving notch 128, which is positioned along edge 73 between the other of slots 119 and tip 77.
As previously mentioned, one of members 18 comprises arms 38 between which toy-receiving space 40 is defined. This member 18 further comprises a main body 130 from which arms 38 extend. The other of members 18 comprises a main body 132. Members 18 each include a pair of trunnions 134 that extend laterally _g_ outwardly from the sides of respective main bodies 130, 132 as shown best in Fig. 3.
Trunnions 134 are received in respective pivot apertures 124, 125, thereby to couple unit 16 to tray 12 for pivoting movement about respective pivot axes 28. In alternative embodiments, pivot pins or hinges are provided for coupling main bodies S 130, 132 to tray 12.
During attachment of each unit 16 to tray 12, the associated flexible fingers 120 are deflected away from unit-receiving spaces 100 by engagement of the respective trunnions 134 with the portions of flexible fingers 124 between lower tips 122 and apertures 124. Upon alignment of apertures 124, 125 with trunnions 134, flexible fingers 124 unflex so that trunnions 134 are received in apertures 124, 125.
To decouple units 16 from tray 12, a user simply engages the portions of flexible fingers 124 that extend below lower edge 73 of vertical walls 74 and flexes fingers 124 away from units 16 until tnumions 134 are no longer received in apertures 124, at which point units 16 can be decoupled from tray 12.
Members 18 each include a detent 136 extending laterally from the side of respective main bodies 130, 132 that confronts the associated inboard vertical wall 74 as shown in Fig. 3 with regard to one of units 16. Detents 136 extend from main bodies 130, 132 by an amount that is less than the amount that trunnions extend from main bodies 130, 132. Each of members 18 further comprises a rear surface 138 that is inclined with respect to the associated surface 24. In addition, each member 18 comprises a convex surface 140 that meets with the associated rear surface 138 at a second end 142 of the respective member 18. Each member 18 also comprises a laterally extending rib 144 appended to the respective rear surface 138 about midway between end 142 and surface 24.
Units 16 are pivotable about axes 28 between first and second positions as mentioned previously. When units 16 are in the first positions, surfaces 24 of respective members 18 engage respective inclined surfaces 114 of walls 112 as shown in Fig. 4. In addition, detents 136 are received in respective detent-receiving apertures 126 when units 16 are in the first positions. When units 16 are in the second positions, ribs 144 engage respective lower edges 116 of walls 112 as shown in Fig. 5.
In addition, detents 136 are received in respective detent-receiving notches 128 when units 16 are in the second positions. Thus, surface 114 of each inclined wall serves as a respective first stop that limits the amount that the associated unit 16 is able to pivot about axes 28 in a first direction, indicated by arrow 146 in Fig. 5, and edge 116 of each inclined wall 114 serves as a second stop that limits the amount that the associated unit 16 is able to pivot about axes 28 in a second direction, indicated by arrow 148 in Fig. 4. In addition, receipt of detents 136 in apertures 126 tends to resist pivoting of units 16 from the first positions toward the second positions and receipt of detents 136 in notches 128 tends to resist pivoting of units 16 from the second positions toward the first positions. However, application of a sufficient amount of force to units 16 causes detents 136 to move out of detent apertures 126 or notches 128, as the case may be, permitting units 16 to pivot between the first and second positions.
In the illustrative embodiment, units 16 pivot through an angle of about 13 S degrees when moved between the first and second positions. Units 16 are configured so that when in the first position, surfaces 24 are horizontal and face upwardly, and when in the second position, surfaces 138 are horizontal and face downwardly. Thus, the included angle between surfaces 24 and associated surfaces 138 is about 135 degrees, as is the angular spacing about the associated axis between respective detent-receiving apertures 126 and detent-receiving notches 128.
In addition, units 16 are configured so that when in the first position, convex surfaces 140 generally follow the contour of upper edges 75 of associated vertical walls 74.
Furthermore, when units 16 are in the first positions, a majority of units 16 are positioned to lie in unit-receiving spaces 100 to substantially fill spaces 100 as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. However, when units are in the first positions, a portion of each unit 16 extends beyond the associated space 100 and through the associated notch 110 so that at least a portion of the respective toy 20 is situated within the perimeter of central tray surface 52 as shown in Fig. 4. When units 16 are in the second positions, a majority of each unit 16 is positioned to lie outside the associated unit-receiving space 100 and the associated toy 20 is situated outside the perimeter of central tray surface 52 as shown in Figs. 2 and 5.
In the illustrative embodiment, the first and second stops provided by surfaces 114 and edges 116, respectively, of inclined walls 112 are spaced apart from surfaces 52, 55 of horizontal wall 53. However, other configurations for stopping units 16 in the first and second positions are within the scope of this disclosure. For example, in some alternative embodiments, members 18 are configured so that a first portion of members 18 engage surface 52 when units 16 are in the first positions and so that a second portion of members 18 engage surface 55 when units 16 are in the second positions. In other embodiments, members 18 include a first pair of tabs or other suitable structures that extend laterally from the sides thereof to engage upper convex edges 75 of vertical walls 74 when units 16 are in the first positions and a second pair of tabs or other suitable structures that extend laterally from the sides thereof to engage lower edges 73 of vertical walls 74 when units 16 are in the second positions. According to other alternative embodiments, main tray 12 includes stop surfaces that extend between the bottom of associated walls 114 and either interior wall 56, bottom wall 55, or respective lower edges 73. In such embodiments, members 18 are configured appropriately so as to engage the respective alternative stop surfaces when entertainment units are in the respective second positions.
Combinations of the above-mentioned stop arrangements are also within the scope of this disclosure.
Main tray 12 is configured so that axes 28 lie in a common horizontal plane and converge toward one another so as to intersect at an imaginary point in front of front portion 64 of perimeter rim 54 as suggested in Figs. 2 and 3. As a result of this orientation of axes 28, when units 16 are in the first positions, the portions of units 16 between axes 28 and ends 30 converge toward each other as shown in Fig. 1 and when units 16 are in the second positions, the portions of units 16 between axes 28 and ends 30 diverge away from each other as shown in Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view of one of the corner regions of the high chair tray assembly showing one of the entertainment units in the first position having the planar surface of the unit engaging an inclined surface of an inclined wall of the main tray and having the toy at the outer end of the unit suspended above a horizontal bottom wall of the main tray at a location that is accessible to a child seated in the high chair; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view, similar to Fig. 4, showing the entertainment unit moved to the second position having a stop rib of the unit engaging a lower edge of the inclined wall of the main tray to support the unit in the second position and the toy at the outer end of the unit being supported at a location that is generally out of the reach of the child seated in the high chair.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
A tray assembly 10 includes a main tray 12 adapted to be mounted on a juvenile high chair 14 and a pair of entertainment units 16 coupled to main tray 12 for pivoting movement between respective first positions shown, for example, in Fig. 1 and respective second positions shown, for example, in Fig. 2. Each entertainment unit 16 includes a member 18 and a toy 20 coupled to the respective member 18.
When entertainment units 16 are in their respective first positions, toys 20 are accessible to a child (not shown) seated on a seat 22 of high chair 14 and when entertainment units 16 are in their respective second positions, toys 20 are positioned further away from the child seated on seat 22 of high chair 14. The terms "child" and "juvenile" are used interchangeably in this disclosure.
A first surface 24 of each member 18 is formed to include a feature 26 which is adapted to receive items that are associated with feeding a child seated in high chair 14. In the illustrative embodiment, the features formed in surfaces comprise receptacles (hereinafter referred to as "receptacles 26") that are sized and configured to receive cups. It is within the scope of this disclosure to size and configure receptacles 26 to receive bowls, bottles, juice boxes, feeding utensils, or the like. In some embodiments, more than one receptacle 26 is formed in each surface 24.
When entertainment units 16 are in the second positions, surfaces 24 face upwardly permitting caregivers to place items in receptacles 26 as shown in Fig. 2. The items placed in receptacles 26 when units 16 are in the second positions are positioned generally out of the reach of the child seated in high chair 14.
When a child is seated in high chair 14 during playtime, a caregiver moves entertainment units 16 to the respective first positions so that the child seated in high chair 14 has access to and can play with toys 20. During mealtime, the caregiver flips entertainment units 16 to the respective second positions so that toys 20 are positioned away from the child and so that receptacles 26 are exposed for use.
Items associated with feeding the child can then be placed in receptacles 26.
When mealtime is over and the items are removed from receptacles 26, the caregiver can then flip entertainment units 16 back to the respective first positions so that the child, once again, can play with toys 20.
Units 16 pivot relative to main tray 12 about respective pivot axes 28, shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Members 18 each include first or outer ends 30 that are distal from respective axes 28. Toys 20 are coupled to members 18 adjacent ends 30.
Toy 20 of one of units 16 is coupled to the associated member 18 for rotation about an axis 32 that is orthogonal to the associated axis 28 as shown in Fig. 3. Toy 20 of the other of units 16 is coupled to the associated member 18 for rotation about an axis 34 that is parallel with the associated axis 28 as also shown in Fig. 3. With regard to this latter unit 16, member 18 comprises a pair of arms 38 that define a toy-receiving space 40 therebetween.
The toy 20 received in space 40 includes three members 42, each of which is rotatable independently about axis 34 as suggested in Figs. 3-5. Each member 42 comprises a central cylinder 44 that receives a pivot pin (not shown) extending between arms 38 and a pair of plates 46 extending away from cylinder 44.
Each of plates 46 comprises indicia (not shown) such as letters of the alphabet, numbers, images of animals, images of food items, or the like. In some embodiments, plates 46 include decals on which the indicia is printed, and, in other embodiments, the indicia is formed integrally with plates 46. The other of illustrative toys 20 includes a backing plate 48 and a transparent dome 50 coupled to backing plate 50 as shown in Fig. 2. Dome 50 houses a plurality of loose objects (not shown) that move within dome 50 to make noise as backing plate 48 and dome 50 are spun about axis 32. It is within the scope of this disclosure for other types of toys, such as cartoon characters, action figures, squeezable noise makers, buttons, levers, etc., or combinations of these to be coupled to members 18 of units 16.
Main tray 12 comprises a central, main tray surface 52 and a perimeter rim 54 lying around tray surface 32 as shown best in Fig. 3. Main tray surface 52 is substantially horizontal and faces upwardly. Perimeter rim 54 includes an interior wall 56 extending upwardly from surface 52 around the periphery thereof.
Surface 52 cooperates with interior wall 56 to provide main tray 12 with a large recess 58. Items (not shown) such as food containers, drink containers, toys, and the like are supported on surface 52 within recess 58. Interior wall 56 serves as a barrier to inhibit the items supported on surface 52 from falling off of main tray 12.
S Perimeter rim 54 comprises a top wall 60 that extends outwardly from interior wall 56 away from recess 58 as shown in Fig. 3. Perimeter rim 54 further comprises an exterior wall 62 extending generally downwardly from top wall 62 although, as will be described in further detail below, the portion of exterior wall 62 at the front of tray assembly 10 is formed to include various features that may be used by a caregiver when feeding a child seated in high chair 14.
In the illustrative embodiment of main tray 12, walls 56, 60, 62 of perimeter rim 54 and a horizontal wall 53 that provides horizontal tray surface 52 are molded as a monolithic piece and have substantially uniform thickness.
However, it is within the scope of this disclosure for main tray 12 to be comprised of separate wall pieces that couple together and for the separate wall pieces to have varying thicknesses or thickness that are different than other wall pieces. In addition, it is within the scope of this disclosure for main tray 12 to be comprised of a monolithic piece of material that has varying thickness.
Perimeter rim 54 provides the outer boundary of main tray 12 and thus, has a front portion 64, a rear portion 66, and a pair of side potions 68 extending between front portion 64 and rear portion 66. Side portions 68 cooperate with rear portion 66 to define a pair of rear corner regions 70 of tray 12 and cooperate with front portion 68 to define a pair of front corner regions 72 of tray 12. The rear portion 66 of perimeter rim 54 is slightly concave to accommodate the chest or abdomen of a child seated in high chair 14. The part of exterior wall 62 associated with rear portion 66 extends substantially vertically downwardly from the part of top wall 60 that is associated with rear portion 66.
Perimeter rim 54 includes a set of four vertical walls 74, two of which are located at one of the front corner regions 72 of perimeter rim 54 and two of which are located at the other of the front corner regions 72 of perimeter rim 54 as shown in Fig. 3. Each vertical wall 74 extends substantially horizontally away from interior wall 56 and away from recess 58. In addition, each vertical wall 74 has a lower edge 73 that is substantially coplanar with a bottom surface 55 of horizontal wall 53, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and a slightly convex upper edge 75, shown in Fig. 3, that tapers downwardly from top wall 60 toward lower edge 73. Each vertical wall 74, therefore, has a somewhat pointed tip 77 where edges 73, 75 meet.
The parts of exterior wall 62 associated with side portions 68 extend substantially vertically downwardly from top wall 60 at the associated rear corner regions 70 of perimeter rim 54 and flare outwardly and downwardly from top wall 60 so as to follow the contour of associated upper edges 75 of respective vertical walls 74 at the associated front corner regions 72 of perimeter rim 54. Thus, going in the direction from the rear of tray 12 to the front of tray 12, the parts of exterior wall 62 associated with side portions 68 of perimeter rim 54 transition smoothly from extending substantially vertically downwardly from top wall 60 to flaring outwardly and downwardly from top wall 60 as shown in Fig. 3.
The part of exterior wall 62 associated with front portion 64 of perimeter rim 54 extends side-to-side between an associated pair of vertical walls 74 as shown in Fig. 3. The front portion of exterior wall 62 comprises a substantially horizontal platform wall 76, a first vertical wall 78 extending between top wall 60 and platform wall 76, and a second vertical wall 80 extending downwardly from platform wall 76 at the front thereof. Thus, walls 60, 76, 78, 80 form a somewhat stepped configuration at the front of main tray 12. The part of exterior wall 62 associated with front portion 64 also comprises a pair of sloping ridge walls 82 that are appended to and follow the contour of edges 75 of the associated vertical walls 74. In addition, the part of exterior wall 62 associated with front portion 64 comprises a pair of end walls 84 extending generally vertically between respective ridge walls 76 and platform wall 76.
Platform wall 76 is formed to include one or more features that may be used by the caregiver when feeding the child seated in high chair 14. The features formed in illustrative platform wall 78 comprise a central aperture 86, a juice box receptacle 88 on one side of aperture 86, and a cup receptacle 90 on the other side of aperture 86 as shown best in Fig. 3. Forming aperture 86 in platform wall 78 provides perimeter rim 54 with a bar 92 on which towels, wash cloths, and the like can be hung. An aperture wall 94 hangs downwardly from platform wall 78 and outlines _7_ aperture 86. In the illustrative embodiment, a bottom edge 96 of exterior wall 62 is substantially coplanar with bottom surface 55 of wall 53, as is a bottom edge 98 of aperture wall 94. In alternative embodiments, some or all of edges 96, 98 may lie above or below bottom surface 55 of wall 53. Because features 86, 88, 90, 92 are formed in platform wall 78, which is situated at the front of main tray 12, the items placed on platform wall 78 are positioned generally out of the reach of the child seated on high chair 14.
A pair of unit-receiving spaces 100 are defined between respective pairs of vertical walls 74 at front corner regions 72 of perimeter rim 54 as shown in Fig. 3. In addition, interior wall 56 is formed to include a pair of notches 110 that are open at top wall 60 and that communicate with unit-receiving spaces 100. Main tray 12 includes a pair of inclined walls 112, each of which slopes downwardly and outwardly from notches 110 and each of which extends laterally between associated pairs of vertical walls 74. Each of inclined walls 112 includes an inclined surface 114 and a lower edge 116 as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 with regard to one of walls 112.
The inboard pair of vertical walls 74 are each formed to include a pair of slots 118 that are open at lower edge 73 and that extend vertically upwardly therefrom as shown best in Fig. 3 with regard to one of the inboard walls.
Each slot 118 terminates at a respective upper edge 119 which is located between the associated edges 73 , 75 of vertical walls 74. Each of the inboard vertical walls 74, therefore, comprises a flexible finger 120 defined between the associated pair of slots 118.
Flexible fingers 120 each have a lower tip 122 that is positioned to lie below the associated lower edge 73. In addition, each flexible finger 120 is formed to include a pivot aperture 124. Each of the outboard vertical walls 74 is formed to include a pivot aperture 125 that is aligned with a companion aperture 124. The inboard vertical walls 74 are each formed to include a detent-receiving aperture 126, which is positioned generally above one of slots 118, and a detent-receiving notch 128, which is positioned along edge 73 between the other of slots 119 and tip 77.
As previously mentioned, one of members 18 comprises arms 38 between which toy-receiving space 40 is defined. This member 18 further comprises a main body 130 from which arms 38 extend. The other of members 18 comprises a main body 132. Members 18 each include a pair of trunnions 134 that extend laterally _g_ outwardly from the sides of respective main bodies 130, 132 as shown best in Fig. 3.
Trunnions 134 are received in respective pivot apertures 124, 125, thereby to couple unit 16 to tray 12 for pivoting movement about respective pivot axes 28. In alternative embodiments, pivot pins or hinges are provided for coupling main bodies S 130, 132 to tray 12.
During attachment of each unit 16 to tray 12, the associated flexible fingers 120 are deflected away from unit-receiving spaces 100 by engagement of the respective trunnions 134 with the portions of flexible fingers 124 between lower tips 122 and apertures 124. Upon alignment of apertures 124, 125 with trunnions 134, flexible fingers 124 unflex so that trunnions 134 are received in apertures 124, 125.
To decouple units 16 from tray 12, a user simply engages the portions of flexible fingers 124 that extend below lower edge 73 of vertical walls 74 and flexes fingers 124 away from units 16 until tnumions 134 are no longer received in apertures 124, at which point units 16 can be decoupled from tray 12.
Members 18 each include a detent 136 extending laterally from the side of respective main bodies 130, 132 that confronts the associated inboard vertical wall 74 as shown in Fig. 3 with regard to one of units 16. Detents 136 extend from main bodies 130, 132 by an amount that is less than the amount that trunnions extend from main bodies 130, 132. Each of members 18 further comprises a rear surface 138 that is inclined with respect to the associated surface 24. In addition, each member 18 comprises a convex surface 140 that meets with the associated rear surface 138 at a second end 142 of the respective member 18. Each member 18 also comprises a laterally extending rib 144 appended to the respective rear surface 138 about midway between end 142 and surface 24.
Units 16 are pivotable about axes 28 between first and second positions as mentioned previously. When units 16 are in the first positions, surfaces 24 of respective members 18 engage respective inclined surfaces 114 of walls 112 as shown in Fig. 4. In addition, detents 136 are received in respective detent-receiving apertures 126 when units 16 are in the first positions. When units 16 are in the second positions, ribs 144 engage respective lower edges 116 of walls 112 as shown in Fig. 5.
In addition, detents 136 are received in respective detent-receiving notches 128 when units 16 are in the second positions. Thus, surface 114 of each inclined wall serves as a respective first stop that limits the amount that the associated unit 16 is able to pivot about axes 28 in a first direction, indicated by arrow 146 in Fig. 5, and edge 116 of each inclined wall 114 serves as a second stop that limits the amount that the associated unit 16 is able to pivot about axes 28 in a second direction, indicated by arrow 148 in Fig. 4. In addition, receipt of detents 136 in apertures 126 tends to resist pivoting of units 16 from the first positions toward the second positions and receipt of detents 136 in notches 128 tends to resist pivoting of units 16 from the second positions toward the first positions. However, application of a sufficient amount of force to units 16 causes detents 136 to move out of detent apertures 126 or notches 128, as the case may be, permitting units 16 to pivot between the first and second positions.
In the illustrative embodiment, units 16 pivot through an angle of about 13 S degrees when moved between the first and second positions. Units 16 are configured so that when in the first position, surfaces 24 are horizontal and face upwardly, and when in the second position, surfaces 138 are horizontal and face downwardly. Thus, the included angle between surfaces 24 and associated surfaces 138 is about 135 degrees, as is the angular spacing about the associated axis between respective detent-receiving apertures 126 and detent-receiving notches 128.
In addition, units 16 are configured so that when in the first position, convex surfaces 140 generally follow the contour of upper edges 75 of associated vertical walls 74.
Furthermore, when units 16 are in the first positions, a majority of units 16 are positioned to lie in unit-receiving spaces 100 to substantially fill spaces 100 as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. However, when units are in the first positions, a portion of each unit 16 extends beyond the associated space 100 and through the associated notch 110 so that at least a portion of the respective toy 20 is situated within the perimeter of central tray surface 52 as shown in Fig. 4. When units 16 are in the second positions, a majority of each unit 16 is positioned to lie outside the associated unit-receiving space 100 and the associated toy 20 is situated outside the perimeter of central tray surface 52 as shown in Figs. 2 and 5.
In the illustrative embodiment, the first and second stops provided by surfaces 114 and edges 116, respectively, of inclined walls 112 are spaced apart from surfaces 52, 55 of horizontal wall 53. However, other configurations for stopping units 16 in the first and second positions are within the scope of this disclosure. For example, in some alternative embodiments, members 18 are configured so that a first portion of members 18 engage surface 52 when units 16 are in the first positions and so that a second portion of members 18 engage surface 55 when units 16 are in the second positions. In other embodiments, members 18 include a first pair of tabs or other suitable structures that extend laterally from the sides thereof to engage upper convex edges 75 of vertical walls 74 when units 16 are in the first positions and a second pair of tabs or other suitable structures that extend laterally from the sides thereof to engage lower edges 73 of vertical walls 74 when units 16 are in the second positions. According to other alternative embodiments, main tray 12 includes stop surfaces that extend between the bottom of associated walls 114 and either interior wall 56, bottom wall 55, or respective lower edges 73. In such embodiments, members 18 are configured appropriately so as to engage the respective alternative stop surfaces when entertainment units are in the respective second positions.
Combinations of the above-mentioned stop arrangements are also within the scope of this disclosure.
Main tray 12 is configured so that axes 28 lie in a common horizontal plane and converge toward one another so as to intersect at an imaginary point in front of front portion 64 of perimeter rim 54 as suggested in Figs. 2 and 3. As a result of this orientation of axes 28, when units 16 are in the first positions, the portions of units 16 between axes 28 and ends 30 converge toward each other as shown in Fig. 1 and when units 16 are in the second positions, the portions of units 16 between axes 28 and ends 30 diverge away from each other as shown in Fig. 2.
Claims (42)
1. A tray assembly for use with a juvenile high chair on which a juvenile sits, the tray assembly comprising a main tray having a horizontal main tray surface and a perimeter rim lying around the tray surface, the perimeter rim including a first stop and a second stop, the first stop comprising a stop surface that is inclined at an angle with respect to the main tray surface, and an entertainment unit coupled to the main tray for pivoting movement between a first position engaging the first stop and a second position engaging the second stop, the entertainment unit having a surface that engages the first stop when the entertainment unit is in the first position and that faces upwardly when the entertainment unit is in the second position.
2. The tray assembly of claim 1, wherein the entertainment unit comprises a member and a toy coupled to the member, the member provides the surface, the toy is accessible to the juvenile when the entertainment unit is in a first position, and the toy is positioned further away from the juvenile when the entertainment unit is in the second position.
3. The tray assembly of claim 2, wherein the toy is rotatable relative to the member.
4. The tray assembly of claim 2, when the member is formed to include a feature usable by a caregiver when feeding the juvenile seated in the juvenile high chair.
5. The tray assembly of claim 4, where in the feature comprises a cup holder.
6. The tray assembly of claim 4, wherein the feature is formed in the surface that engages the first stop surface when the entertainment unit is in the first position and that faces upwardly when the entertainment unit is in the second position.
7. The tray assembly of claim 1, wherein the perimeter rim comprises a pair of vertical walls in the vicinity of the first and second stops, each vertical wall is formed to include an aperture, the entertainment unit has a pair of trunnions, and each trunnion is received in a respective aperture to pivotably couple the entertainment unit to the main tray.
8. The tray assembly of claim 7, wherein at least one of the vertical walls is formed to include a pair of slots, a flexible finger is defined in the at least one vertical wall defined between the pair of slots, and the aperture of the at least one vertical wall is formed in the flexible finger.
9. The tray assembly of claim 7, wherein at least one of the vertical walls is formed to include a detent-receiving aperture and a detent-receiving notch, the entertainment unit comprises a member and a detent extending from the member, the detent is received in the detent-receiving aperture when the entertainment unit is in the first position, and the detent is received in the detent-receiving notch when the entertainment unit is in the second position.
10. A tray assembly for use with a juvenile high chair on which a juvenile sits, the tray assembly comprising a main tray adapted to couple to the high chair, the main tray having a horizontal main tray surface and a perimeter rim lying around the tray surface, the perimeter rim having a first stop spaced apart from the tray surface and a second stop spaced apart from the tray surface, and an entertainment unit having a member coupled to the main tray for pivoting movement about a pivot axis and a toy coupled to the member, the member being pivotable between a first position in which the member engages the first stop and supports the toy above the upwardly-facing tray surface at a location accessible to the juvenile seated on the high chair and a second position in which the member engages the second stop and in which a majority of the member extends away from the main tray and away from the perimeter rim to support the toy at a location away from the juvenile seated on the high chair.
11. The tray assembly of claim 10, wherein the member is formed to include a receptacle configured to receive at least one of a cup, a bowl, a bottle, a juice box, and a feeding utensil.
12. The tray assembly of claim 10, wherein the member is elongated and has an end distal from the pivot axis and the toy is coupled to the member adjacent the end.
13. The tray assembly of claim 10, wherein the toy is rotatable relative to the member about a toy axis.
14. The tray assembly of claim 13, wherein the toy axis is parallel with the pivot axis.
15. The tray assembly of claim 13, wherein the toy axis is orthogonal to the pivot axis.
16. The tray assembly of claim 10, wherein the member has a main body and a pair of arms extending from the main body, a toy-receiving space is defined between the pair of arms, and at least a portion of the toy is received in the toy-receiving space.
17. The tray assembly of claim 16, wherein the main body of the member has a feature usable by a caregiver when feeding the juvenile seated in the juvenile high chair.
18. The tray assembly of claim 16, wherein the main body of the member engages the first stop when the member is in the first position.
19. The tray assembly of claim 10, wherein the member has a first end and a second end, the toy is coupled to the first end, a stop rib extends from the main body adjacent the second end, and the stop rib engages the second stop when the member is in the second position.
20. The tray assembly of claim 10, wherein the first stop comprises a stop surface that is inclined with respect to the tray surface.
21. The tray assembly of claim 10, wherein the main tray has a wall inclined with respect to the tray surface, the wall has a wall surface that provides the first stop, and the wall has a wall edge that provides the second stop.
22. The tray assembly of claim 21, wherein the member has a first surface that is horizontal when the member is in the second position, a second surface inclined with respect to the first surface, and a stop rib extending from the second surface, the stop rib engages the wall edge when the member is in the second position, and the first surface of the member engages the wall surface of the main tray when the member is in the first position.
23. A tray assembly for use with a juvenile high chair on which a juvenile sits, the tray assembly comprising a main tray having a horizontal main tray surface and a perimeter rim lying around the tray surface, the perimeter rim having a front portion, a rear portion, and a pair of spaced-apart side portions, the side portions cooperating with the front portions to define a pair of front corner regions of the main tray, and a pair of entertainment units coupled to the front corner regions for pivoting movement about respective pivot axes, the entertainment units each having a distal end spaced apart from the respective pivot axis, the entertainment units being pivotable between respective first positions in which the portions of the entertainment units between the pivot axes and the distal ends converge toward each other and respective second positions in which portions of the entertainment units between the pivot axes and the distal ends extend away from the corner regions and diverge away from each other.
24. The tray assembly of claim 23, wherein the corner regions are each formed to include a unit-receiving space and at least a portion of each entertainment unit is received in a respective unit-receiving space.
25. The tray assembly of claim 24, wherein the corner regions each comprise a pair of vertical walls between which the respective unit-receiving space is defined and each entertainment unit is pivotably coupled to the pair of vertical walls of the respective corner region.
26. The tray assembly of claim 25, wherein each vertical wall is formed to include an aperture, each entertainment unit has a main body and a pair of trunnions extending from the main body, and each trunnion is received by a respective one of the apertures formed in the vertical walls to pivotably couple the entertainment units to the front corner regions.
27. The tray assembly of claim 25, wherein the each corner region comprises a stop wall extending between the respective pair of vertical walls, each stop wall has a first stop and a second stop, each entertainment unit has a first portion that engages the first stop when in the respective first position, and each entertainment unit has a second portion that engages the second stop when in the respective second position.
28. The tray assembly of claim 24, wherein more than half of each entertainment unit is positioned to lie in the respective unit-receiving space when in the respective first position and less than half of each entertainment unit is positioned to lie in the respective unit-receiving space when in the respective second position.
29. The tray assembly of claim 23, wherein the perimeter rim comprises a rim wall extending upwardly from the horizontal main tray surface, the rim wall is formed to include a pair of notches, each notch is associated with a respective one of the corner regions, the entertainment units extend through the notches when in the first positions, and the entertainment units are spaced apart from the notches when in the second positions.
30. The tray assembly of claim 23, wherein the corner regions each have a wall and a flexible finger spaced from the associated wall, each flexible finger and each wall is formed to include an aperture, each entertainment unit has a main body and a pair of trunnions extending from the main body, and each trunnion is received by a respective one of the apertures to pivotably couple the entertainment units to the front corner regions.
31. A tray assembly for use with a juvenile high chair, the tray assembly comprising a main tray adapted to couple to the juvenile high chair and including a horizontal main tray surface having a perimeter, a member coupled to the main tray for pivoting movement about a pivot axis, and a toy coupled to the member, the member being pivotable between a first position in which at least a portion of the toy is situated within the perimeter and a second position in which the toy is situated outside the perimeter.
32. The tray assembly of claim 31, wherein the main tray has a perimeter rim lying around the perimeter of the main tray surface and the member is coupled to the perimeter rim for pivoting movement.
33. The tray assembly claim 32, wherein the perimeter rim is formed to include a notch, the member is positioned to lie outside the notch when the member is in first position, and at least a portion of the member is received in the notch when the member is in the second position.
34. The tray assembly of claim 32, wherein the perimeter rim comprises a wall having an inclined surface and having a bottom edge, the member engages the inclined surface when in the first position, and the member engages the edge when in the second position.
35. The tray assembly of claim 31, wherein the toy is coupled to the member for pivoting movement about a toy axis.
36. The tray assembly of claim 35, wherein the toy axis is parallel with the pivot axis about which the member pivots.
37. The tray assembly of claim 35, wherein the toy axis is orthogonal to the pivot axis about which the member pivots.
38. The tray assembly of claim 31, wherein the member is formed to include a feature that is usable by a caregiver when feeding a juvenile seated in the juvenile high chair.
39. The tray assembly of claim 38, wherein the feature comprises a receptacle.
40. The tray assembly of claim 31, wherein the main tray has a front portion, a rear portion, and a pair of side portions extending between the front portion and the rear portion, the front portion cooperates with the side portions to define a pair of corner regions, and the member is coupled to one of the corner regions.
41. The tray assembly of claim 31, wherein the main tray has a perimeter rim lying around the main tray surface, the perimeter rim is formed to include a pair of apertures, the member has a main body and a pair of trunnions coupled to the main body, and the trunnions are received in the apertures.
42. The tray assembly of claim 41, wherein the perimeter rim has a wall and a flexible finger, one of the pair of apertures is formed in the flexible finger, and the other of the pair of apertures is formed in the wall.
