Abstract

Les déchets urbains sont comprimés en briquettes pouvant ensuite être gazéifiées pour produire un gaz combustible, lequel peut être utilisé à son tour pour produire de l'électricité et de la vapeur. Les déchets combustibles sont alimentés dans une machine à faire les briquettes. Pour former les briquettes, une technique de haute compression est employée, qui élimine une grande partie de l'eau présente et produit une briquette résistante à la décomposition. Ces briquettes peuvent être utilisées immédiatement ou entreposées pendant une période relativement longue avant utilisation. Lorsque les briquettes sont gazéifiées, les gaz combustibles obtenus présentent une qualité suffisamment élevée pour qu'on puisse les enflammer et les utiliser pour alimenter une turbine à réaction aux fins de produire de l'électricité et subséquemment de la vapeur. La vapeur ainsi produite peut ensuite être employée pour alimenter des réacteurs électrogènes, ou comme vapeur industrielle pour diverses applications.
