Abstract
The present invention relates to a device for protection of the buttocks and coccyx when falling backward during practising snowboarding, and to keep the buttocks warm during activisties in cold cllimate. The device comprises a sheet (1) shaped to cover the wearer's buttocks where the sheet (1) close to its upper rim, is provided with a belt (3) to be fastened around the wearer' s waist, and the lower part of the sheet (1) is divided into two tongues (5) t o fit into a trousers legs, by an incision (4), where sheet (1) is made of a pliable material covering most of the wearer's buttock and a hard shock absorbing shell (3) to cover the coccyx.
Description
DEVICE FOR PROTECTION OF THE BUTTOCKS AND COCCYX
The present invention relates to a device for protection of the buttocks and coccyx when falling backward during practising snowboarding, and to keep the buttocks warm during activities in cold climate.
It is observed at hospitals that damages to the tail bone or coccyx caused by fall during the practising of the snowboard sport is constantly increasing. Another problem in practising an outdoor activity in cold climate is that the bottoms become cold resulting in feeling cold. Today there is no product available at the marked that satisfies the need for a snowboarder to protect his tailbone and at the same time keep the bottoms warm.
Several protective devices are known from the prior art.
In US 5.983.407 a protective pad to be worn under the trousers are known. This device is designed for skaters to protect the tailbone when falling backwards and is so small that it merely covers the tailbone. The device is fastened by means of a hook to be fastened in the waistband or in a belt. This hook may be damaging to the lower part of the vertebral column when falling. Additionally, due to the small size, covering only the tailbone, it will not satisfy the need to keep the buttocks warm.
US 5.619.747 describes a protective brace for figure skaters t protect the back, bottoms and tail bone. This device comprises a semi rigid, resilient plastic shell that has to be flexible enough to follow the movements of the user's body. The semi rigid, resilient shell will reduce an impact towards the coccyx but will not necessarily prevent a fracture. US 5.572.737 describes shorts for roller skaters having protective inserts to avoid injuries when falling. The described device is a part of a shorts and is not a unit of its own that is independent on the clothes that is worn so that it may be taken from one piece of clothing to another.
US 5.551.082 describe a protective athletic pant having integrated protective elements to protect the user's hips against injuries caused by an impact of a fall.
This device do not have any specific protection for coccyx.

This device do not have any specific protection for coccyx.
JP -A 10-088401 describes soft protective shock-absorbing pads) in an inner pants to protect the hips and the coccyx. The protective pad is made of a pliable material and will not give sufficient protection of coccyx.
Two very similar solutions are known from JP-A 09-299540 and JP-A 09-290038, both comprising a plurality of protective pads or sheets arranged on a common support that is used as a protection for the hips and buttocks. The protective pads or sheets are pliable and does not give sufficient support for coccyx.
None of the existing devices gives a satisfying solution to the needs for snowboarders.
The object of the present invention is thus to provide a devise that is practical and easy to use, primarily for snowboarders, that will reduce fractures to the tail bone or coccyx by preferably 100 %, at the same time as it is heat insulating and keeps the buttocks of the wearer warm.
This object has been met by a device for protection of the buttocks and coccyx, comprising a sheet shaped to cover the wearer's buttocks, where the sheet close to its upper rim, is provided with a belt to be fastened around the wearer's waist, and the where lower part of the sheet is divided by an incision into two tongues shaped to fit into a trousers legs, wherein the sheet is made of a pliable material covering most of the wearer's buttock and a hard shock absorbing shell to cover the coccyx.
According to a preferred embodiment the sheet is combined with a backsack.
The invention will now be described in further detail with reference to the enclosed figure illustrating a preferred embodiment of the present protective device.
The embodiment of the present protective device illustrated in the figure comprises an anatomically shaped sheet 1 covering most of the wearer's buttocks. A hard shock absorbing shell 2 fastened to the anatomic sheet so that it covers the wearer's tailbone or coccyx.
A belt 3 is provided close to the upper rim of the anatomic shaped sheet 1.
The belt 3 having a buckle, a velcroue or the like, is keeping the device in place toward the wearer's buttocks, preferably inside of an outer garment.

The belt 3 having a buckle, a velcroue or the like, is keeping the device in place toward the wearer's buttocks, preferably inside of an outer garment.
A wedge-shaped cut 4 in the lower part of the sheet is adapted to the wearer's outer garment. Two tongues 5, one at each side of the cut 4, continues under the wearer's thighs into the legs of the trousers and stabilises the device under the buttocks.
The device according to the invention gives the wearer security against fractures in the coccyx at the same time as it improves the comfort for the wearer as it keeps the buttocks warm both in standing and sitting position.
The device according to the invention is primarily considered as a separate article but may be combined i.e. with a backsack.
