Abstract

A tissue disposal bag has a front wall and a back wall, and an elongate vertical centre area of the front wall for disposal of tissue into the bag. The front wall and the back wall of the bag are joined together to form a bag cavity between them. The opening is designed so that, upon application of a minimal force to a portion of the front wall where the opening is located, the front wall separates along the length of the opening, allowing for disposal of tissue through the opening and into the trash bag, which then retains its original shape. This allows for hygienic disposal of the tissue into the bag since the user does not have to close the bag manually.

Description

'TISSUE DISPOSAL BAG
The present invention relates to tissue disposal bags.
Reclosable trash bags are widely used and are generally formed of plastic, such as polyethylene. In recent years, bags of plastic material have become the primary means of collecting refuse of any kind in schools, offices and hospitals. There are advantages to depositing refuse in a plastic bag, relative to a conventional paper bag, among them being increased hygiene and conveni~.:nce.
Conventionally, plastic bags arc used to line trash receptacles, with a wide opening allowing for easy deposit of refuse. Flowever, when a used tissue has been thrown away through the opening, the opening presents a problem. With nothing to cover the trash receptacle, germs from the mucus on the tissue ;ire permitted to emanate into the immediate environment, which may cause individuals in the vicinity to become ill. This presents a problem in school s, affecting both teachers and students, but presents a crisis situation in hospitals, when many individuals with weakened immune systems are forced to be exposed to germs that cannot be combatted.
Sanchez et al. United States Patent No. 3,707,271 discloses a closure construction for a plastic trash bag designed to alleviate a similar problem, that of odour emanating into the environment from the trash bag. The closure construction is for supporting a plastic bag in a position in which the mouth o~~the bag is open so as to permit refuse to be placed in the bag and then in a second position wherein the mouth of the plastic bag is closed and sealed. It serves its purpose; it prevents odour from leaving the trash bag. However, the bag is often difficult to open and reclose, requiring considerable effort from the user.
The bag is inconvenient to use, as the plastic bag requires a device to keep it to open and closed, and it is not resealable on its own accord.
-2-Many prior art patents deal with reclosable plastic bags and include various types of profiles designed to open and close repeatedly. However, as can be seen in Bost et al.
United States Patent No. 5,90$,245, reclosable hags often involve some form of zipper for repeated opening and closing of the bags. There is a problem here in that it is often inconvenient to open and close a bag for each use. Effort is required from the user for both opening and reclosing the plastic bag. As well, when throwing away tissue or any refuse, which requires the user to manually open and close the bag, this can be unhygienic.
It is accordingly an obj ect of the present invention to provide a convenient, hygienic method I 0 of disposing of tissues, which can at least mitigate the drawbacks that are associated with the prior art.
According to one aspect of the present invention, a tissue disposal bag comprises a front wall, a back wall and top, bottom and opposite side edges, the front and back walls being I 5 made of plastic sheet material, the front and back walls being joined to one another along the side, top and bottom edges, a vertical elongate opening in the front wall, the opening spaced from the top, bottom and side edges and being located in an upper half of the front wall, and an adhesive provided on the back wall at the exterior of the bag at the upper edge.
20 According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a tissue disposal bag comprising a front wall, a back wall and top, bottom and opposite side edges, the front and back walls being made of plastic sheet material, the front and back walls being joined to one another along the side, top and bottom edges; a vertical elongate opening in the front wall, the opening spaced from the side edges and being located in an upper half of the front wall, 25 the opening having an upper end spaced from the top edge and a lower end spaced from the bottom edge; and an adhesive provided on the back wall at the exterior of the bag at the upper edge.

The opening enables the front wall to be opened at the centre with a minimal application of force so as to cause two halves of the front wall to be separated along the length of the opening for the disposal of tissue through the opening into the bag, which then regains its original shape with the assistance of the weight of the tissue in the bag.
This allows for hygienic disposal of the tissue, because the user does not have to close the bag manually.
'The adhesive preferably extends the entire width of the rear of the bag in the form of a strip and may be covered by a tear-off strip. Upon removal of the tear-off strip, the adhesive strip is exposed and can be used to attach the bag to a suitable support, e.g. to a desk, night stand or the like. This allows for convenient use of the bag without the use of a trash can.
1'he present invention allows for tissues to be easily deposited into an opening in the bag, while the remainder of the bag remains closed. As well, the present invention provides convenient disposal of used tissue, as it does not require a conventional trash container, since the bag is completely supporl:ed and suspended by itself.
The invention will be more readily understood from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof given, by way of example. with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-Figure 1 illustrates a view in front elevation of a plastic bag embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 illustrates a side view of the plastic bag of Figure l;
Figure 3 illustrates a view in rear elevation of the plastic bag of Figure 1;
Figure 4 illustrates a view in rear elevation of the plastic bag of Figure 1 with an adhesive being exposed; and Figure 5 illustrates a partial perspective view of a desk with the tissue trash bag adhered to the right side of the desk.
Referring to the drawings, a tissue disposal bag may be made of polyethylene or any plastic film desired and has a pair of parallel vertical side edges 7 and 8, a horizontal bottom edge 5 and a horizontal top edge 4 and also an elongate opening 1 in the middle of a front wall 9 for access into the plastic bag 14.
The bag 14 has a back wall 10 joined and sealed to the front wall 9 at side edges 7 and 8, at the bottom edge 5, and at the top edge 4, the opening 1 being formed in the front wall 9 as shown in Figure 1 by making a vertical slit parallel to and midway between the side edges 7 and 8 of the front wall 9.
An upper end 11 of the opening 1 is located closer to the top edge 4 of the bag than a lower end 12 is to the bottom edge 5 of the bag, the opening 1 being a located in an upper half of the front wall 9. The opening 1 is large enough for two fingers and a thumb of an adult to place a tissue through the opening 1 and into the bag. The opening 1 need not allow for the entry of the entire hand, but only of what is necessary to insert a tissue with a downward motion through the opening 1 into the inner cavity of the bag.
Opening of the bag occurs when the user inserts the tissue through the opening 1. Closing of the opening 1 occurs when the tissue has been inserted through the opening 1 in order for it to remain inside the cavity of the bag and the user's fingers have been withdrawn from the opening 1. Completion of the disposal of the tissue into the bag and the withdrawal of the fingers allow for the opening 1 to regain its original shape of a simple slit in the bag 14. The bag 14 is considered closed at this time.

As shown in Figure 2, when the bag is empty it has the thickness of an average plastic bag.
However, once the bag is filled, it is no longer flat and its thickness then depends on the size and fullness of the bag.
The back of the bag, as shown in Figure 4, has an adhesive strip 3 on the exterior of the bag along the top edge 4 and the adhesive strip 3 is covered with a protective tear-off strip 2 to allow for the adhesive strip 3 to remain unexposed until the protective strip 2 is removed.
The bag can then be attached to any item by the exposed adhesive strip 3 and suspended from that item for the use of disposal of tissue. As shown in Figure 5, by way of example, the bag has been adhesively attached to a side of a desk.
