Abstract

A portable visual instructional aid for coaching sports involving the use of a simulated miniature sport playing surface and tokens that are used to represent individual players and other sport equipment. The simulated miniature sport playing surface provides a top-view of the sporting field, court, ice rink, pool, or the like. It is constructed from a flexible material that can be easily rolled up or folded for compact storage and transport but when unfurled or opened it quickly assumes a flat state. The playing surface is preferably constructed from water-resistant or waterproof material to permit the instructional aid to be used during wet weather conditions. Tokens are used to represent individual players and equipment used to play the sports. The coach then uses these tokens to setup game situations on the playing surface to teach the strategy and tactics of a particular sport.

Description

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a portable visual instructional aid that can be used by coaches for teaching strategies and tactics for team sports.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Coaches often use visual aids to explain strategies and tactics of a particular sport to their students or players. It is known in the prior art that this type of instruction is typically taught either in a classroom environment using equipment such as chalkboards or white boards or 'in the field' using notepads or clipboards. Notepads and clipboards are often impractical for instructing a large number of students because viewing range is very limited. Coaches that are able to reserve class time for their students have the advantage in that they can better illustrate their lessons using larger chalkboards. However, most coaches do not always have the ability to schedule classroom practices, particularly ones who instruct recreational or junior teams. It is these coaches that must make do with the smaller notepads or clipboards and it is for these coaches that a portable visual instructional aid is particularly suited.
Regardless of the size of the chalkboard or notepad that is used by a coach, there is a severe limitation resulting from depicting sport strategies on these devices. Whereas this type of instruction is adequate for explaining static strategies, such as initial field positioning, it is poor at describing the dynamic, flowing nature of many sports.
If a coach wishes to depict a particular play on a chalkboard or notepad, he or she must draw the boundary lines of the playing surface, indicate the initial setup of the players and the sport equipment, and use multiple arrows to describe the action and movements of the players and sport equipment involved in the play. The coach cannot properly portray how executing one set play leads into another because the chalkboard is too quickly covered with markings that impede comprehension of further continuation of the scenario. Using an eraser to remove older markings as the play continues can help reduce some of the clutter, but it is a slow and tedious approach. It can also lead to the accidental removal of part of the field markings that then have to be redrawn, and consequently causes confusion respecting the object of the scenario.
In many sports during a real game situation there exists opportunities to call time-outs. A time-out provides a team with a quick break in which they can plan to regain the initiative in the game.
During a time-out, employment of a visual instructional aid would greatly help in rapidly explaining a desired play to all members of the team. Also, during half time or between periods, a coach can identify and depict the weaknesses that the team has been demonstrating in the previous segment of the game. Such instances require that a practical, portable, and lightweight visual instructional aid be available.
It is also known in the prior art to provide a miniature simulated sport playing surface for use in sport based board games. Typical miniature game boards of this type can be identified, for example, in the following Canadian and United States of America patents:
Canadian Patents ~ 699745 issued 15 December, 1964 to Taylor.
2082699 filed on 12 November, 1992 to Stelmach.
United States of America Patents 4,773,650 issued 27 September, 1988 to Doughty.
4,989,879 issued 5 February, 1991 to Nigh.
~ 4,298,202 issued 3 November, 1981 to Singer 5,224,710 issued 6 July, 1993 to Feokhari.
In each of the above sport based game patents the positioning and motion of the players and the sport equipment markers are influenced by chance through either the use of dice, cards, spinners, or probability tables. The miniature sport playing surfaces used in these games are designed to plot the progress of these movements by dividing the miniature sport playing surface into a grid or multiple zones or sections in which the individual playing pieces can occupy. These sport games are not intended nor are they suited for coaching athletes. The sport field markings on these game boards contain superfluous markings for use in the game, which interfere with the coaches' ability to represent the strategies of the real sport. Furthermore, these sport games do not address the requirement for a portable and water-resistant or waterproof instruction aid.
Accordingly, it is desirable to provide a visual instructional aid for coaching sports wherein the dynamic strategies and tactics of a particular sport can be easily presented on a simulated top view of the sport playing surface. It is an object of the invention to provide a coaching instructional aid that functions without a need to illustrate or erase the boundary markings, symbols, arrows, or other markings. It is a further object to provide this a lightweight, portable and water-resistant or waterproof coaching instructional aid.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention provides a portable visual instructional aid for coaching sports comprising a miniature simulated sport playing surface, and tokens that are used to represent individual players and other sport equipment. The tokens and the playing surface may be stored and transported in a compact carrying case.
The miniature simulated sport playing surface is configured to simulate a top-view of a playing area for the sport. For example, a sporting field, court, ice rink, pool, or the like. The miniature playing surface is constructed from a material that can be easily rolled up or folded for compact storage and transport, but when unfurled or opened, readily assumes a flat state. This simulated sport playing surface can be laid flat on any surface including grass, ice, or a wooden court. Members of the team can gather around the sport playing surface while the coach demonstrates the strategies he or she wishes to convey.
A plurality of manually positionable tokens are provided to represent individual players and equipment used to play sports such as balls, pucks, curling rocks, Frisbee discs or the like. The coach uses these tokens to setup game situations on the playing surface to teach the strategy and tactics of a particular sport. The tokens can be slid around the sport playing surface, avoiding the need to lift each token to alter its position. This permits the coach to simultaneously maneuver multiple tokens with hislher fingers to better depict, for example, the unified movements of a zone defence strategy.
To permit the portable visual instructional aid to be used in inclement weather conditions, the playing surface is preferably constructed from a resilient water-resistant or water proof material such as vinyl, plastic, plastic composite, rubber, rubber composite, or treated or laminated paper. The tokens used to represent the individual players and ball should be manufactured from a dense, waterproof material such as glass or metal to prevent the pieces from being blown out of position or being damaged. The compact carrying case should also be made from a durable water-resistant or water-proof material.
BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS OF THE DRAWINGS
Figure 1 is a perspective plan view of the visual aid for coaching sports in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, demonstrating the sport of soccer;
Figure 2. is a perspective view of the simulated sport playing surface stored in a portable tube container;
Figure 3. is a perspective view of a an alternate embodiment of to the simulated sport playing surface shown in Figure 1; and Figure 4. is a front view of a further embodiment of the simulated sport playing surface shown in Figure 1.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
A visual aid for coaching sports as seen in Figure 1 includes a miniature simulated sport playing surface, one or more sets of tokens, and a compact container used for storage and transport.
The sport playing surface is indicated at 1 in Figure 1. Imprinted upon the sport playing surface is a reduced scale reproduction of the boundary and field markings 2 for the sport of soccer. The sport playing surface is constructed from a flexible material that can be easily fi~rled as seen at 1 in Figure 2. This permits the sport playing surface to be placed inside a compact container 8 and sealed with lid 9 for storage and transport.
The sport playing surface can optionally be constructed with fold-lines or hinges as indicated by 10 and 11 in Figures 3 and 4. These fold-lines run straight across the sport playing surface 1 so that it can be folded for storage and transport rather than fi~rled. In this manner, the visual aid for coaching sports can be stored inside a traditional board game type box.
In either case, be the sport playing surface fi~rled or folded, when it is removed from storage, and unfurled or opened, it readily assumes a flat state as is indicated at 1 in Figure 1. In order to permit the portable visual instructional aid to be used during or after wet weather conditions, the playing surface is preferably constructed from a resilient water-resistant or waterproof material such as vinyl, plastic, plastic composite, rubber, rubber composite, treated paper or laminated paper. The tokens that are used to represent the individual players and ball should be manufactured from a dense, durable, waterproof material such as glass, metal or a dense plastic to prevent the pieces from being displaced by wind, or the like. The compact carrying case is preferably also constructed from a durable water-resistant or water-proof material.
The visual aid for coaching sports includes one or more sets of tokens representing the individual team players and equipment required to play the sport. In the embodiment shown in Figure 1, one soccer team is represented by the tokens 3, and their goalie is represented by token 4. The opposing team is represented by tokens 5 and their goalie is represented by token 6.
The soccer ball is represented by token 7. The groups of tokens representing the respective teams, as well as their goalies and the soccer ball are colored differently to permit them to be easily distinguished from one another. A coach can set up and animate all of the tokens on the sport playing surface to teach, in this example, the strategy and tactics characteristic of the sport of soccer.
The coach uses the tokens to set up game situations on the playing surface in order to teach strategy and tactics of a particular sport. The tokens can be slid around the sport playing surface, avoiding the need to lift each token to alter its position. This permits the coach to simultaneously maneuver multiple tokens to better depict, for example, the unified movements of a zone defense strategy.
Although the present invention has been described by way of preferred embodiments thereof, it will be seen by those skilled in the art that numerous variations may be made thereto without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as set out in the appended claims.
For example, in the specific embodiment shown, a soccer field is simulated, however other games such as football, ultimate, basketball, curling, hockey, and water polo, to name but a few, can also be coached and/or demonstrated using a miniature simulated sport playing surface and tokens in accordance with the invention adapted to simulate the particular sport involved.
