Description
EXTENSIBLE CORNER PACKING PROTECTOR
Field of the invention The present invention relates to a corner packing protector. More particularly, the present invention relates to an extensible corner packing protector for protecting an outer corner of an object during transportation thereof and the like, said corner packing protector consisting of two members which are interconnected and slidably movable with respect to one another so as to adjust themselves to the thickness of the corner to be protected.
Background of the invention Corner packing protectors are very well known in the art and have existed for many years now. These packing protectors are generally used to cover and protect the outer corners of objects so as to prevent them from being damaged during transportation and the like. Packing protectors can be used on various corners of a wide and diverse array of objects such as furniture (e.g.
tables), appliances, electronics, laminated frames, toys, etc. These corner packing protectors generally consist of a triangular prism having a cavity provided along one of the sides of the prism, said cavity generally being right-angled and devised to be complementary to the shape and size of the corner to be protected so that the latter can be inserted into the protector. Furthermore, it is also known that corner packing protectors are generally made of a light and shock absorbing material, such as styrofoam for example. However, a major problem associated with the corner packing protectors known in the art is that they only come in fixed shapes and sizes, that is, they do not allow for any flexibility in terms of being able to adjust themselves to the particular thickness of a given corner. That is, a same type of corner packing protector (fixed shape and size) cannot be used for different corners having different thicknesses. This means that several different manufacturing molds need to be used to produce all the different types of corner packing protectors required for each different particular corner to be protected, which translates into higher production costs. Therefore, it would be very useful to provide a corner packing protector which is extensible so as to adjust itself to a particular thickness of a given corner to be protected.
Summary of the invention The main objects of the present invention are to provide a corner packing protector which satisfies the above-mentioned need.
More particularly, a first object of the invention is to provide a corner packing protector which is extensible so as to adjust itself to a particular thickness of a given corner to be protected.
A second object of the invention is to provide a corner packing protector which is easily and rapidly operable.
A third object of the invention is to provide a corner packing protector which is easy to manufacture and inexpensive to produce.
A fourth object of the invention is to provide a corner packing protector which is strong enough to be long-lasting and be used several times while being inexpensive enough to be disposable.
In accordance with the invention, the above objects are achieved by an extensible corner packing protector for protecting an outer corner of a given thickness of an object during transportation thereof, said corner packing protector comprising first and second complementary members, each of said members consisting of a triangular-shaped plate having three lateral sides and opposite inner and outer faces, wherein the inner face of each of said members is provided with a row of alternating projections and recesses having a complementary configuration, said row being disposed along two of the three lateral sides of the inner face, whereby the row of alternating projections and recesses of the first member is positioned, sized and devised to be interconnected with the row of alternating projections and recesses of the second member and is further devised to be slidably movable therewith so as to form a cavity into which the corner is inserted and whereby the distance between the respective inner faces of the first and second members is adjusted according to the thickness of the corner to be protected.

Detailed description of preferred embodiments of the invention In the following description, the same numeral references refer to similar elements.
Moreover, it is worth mentioning that although a preferred embodiment of the invention as illustrated consists of a right-angle isosceles extensible corner packing protector 1, it should be understood that, in the context of the present invention, expressions such as "right-angle" and "isosceles" and any other equivalents or variants thereof, should not be taken in a restrictive sense to limit the scope of the invention since other embodiments for the extensible corner packing protector 1 could be used with the invention, as will be described hereinafter and as apparent to a person skilled in the art. The same should be understood for expressions such as "transportation" and "triangle".
Referring to Figures 1 to 10, the extensible corner packing protector 1 according to a first preferred embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings is an extensible corner packing protector 1 for protecting an outer corner of a given thickness of an object (not shown) during transportation thereof. The corner packing protector 1 comprises first and second members 3, 5.
Each of the members 3, 5 preferably consists of a triangular-shaped plate 7 having three lateral sides and opposite inner and outer faces 9, 11. Each inner face 9 of each member 3, 5 is preferably provided with a row 13 of alternating projections 15 and recesses 17 having a complementary configuration to that of the row 13 of the other member 5, 3. Each row 13 is preferably disposed along two of the three lateral sides of the inner face 9 of each member 3, 5. Moreover, the row 13 of alternating projections 15 and recesses 17 of the first member 3 is positioned, sized and devised to be interconnected with the row 13 of alternating projections 15 and recesses 17 of the second member 5 and is further devised to be slidably movable therewith so as to form a cavity 19 into which the corner is inserted and whereby the distance between the respective inner faces 9 of the first and second members 3, 5 is adjusted according to the thickness of the corner to be protected.
As better shown in Figures 1-8 and 11-13, the corner packing protector 1 can take on three different configurations: a closed configuration, an extended 5 configuration, and a separated configuration.
In the closed configuration, as better shown in Figures 1, 4, 7, and 11, the structural shape of the corner packing protector 1 essentially corresponds to that of a corner packing protector of the prior art. As better illustrated in Figures 1, 7 and 8, the distance A between the respective inner faces 9 of the first and second members 3, 5 is minimal when the protector 1 is in the closed configuration.
It can be easily understood that an appropriate minimal distance Amin should be selected for the objects and applications for which the protector 1 is intended for, as apparent to a person skilled in the art.
Unlike the corner protectors of the prior art, the corner packing protector 1 according to the present invention has first and second members 3, 5 which are devised to be slidably movable with respect to one another so as to vary the distance A between the respective inner faces 9 of each member 3, 5, depending on the thickness of the corner of the object to be protected during transportation.
Hence, the corner packing protector 1 is also operable in an extended configuration, as better shown in Figures 2, 5, 8 and 12, which is adjusted depending on the particular thickness of the corner to be protected. In this extended configuration, the distance A is superior to the minimal distance Amin and the row 13 of alternating projections 15 and recesses 17 of the first member 3 is interconnected and slidably movable with respect to the row 13 of alternating projections 15 and recesses 17 of the second member 5, because of the complementary geometric configuration of these two rows 13. It is worth mentioning that the geometric complementary configuration of the rows 13 of alternating projections 15 and recesses 17 may take on various other different forms and patterns than the ones shown in the accompanying drawings without departing from the scope of the present invention, as apparent to a person skilled in the art. Furthermore, the rows 13 of projections 15 and recesses 17 are preferably devised so that friction is present thereinbetween so as to maintain the corner packing protector 1 in a desired extended position of a given thickness A.
Although the preferred rows 13 shown and explained herein have each more than one projection 15 and more than one recess 17, it is worth mentioning that the corner packing protector 1 could ultimately have two members 3, 5 having rows 13 comprising only one projection 15 and only one recess 17 respectively.
That is, each member 3, 5 has an appropriate number of rows 13 having each an appropriate number of projections 15 and recesses 17, according to the intended purpose of the corner packing protector 1. It is worth noting also that the first and second members 3, 5 of the protector 1 may be provided with other means enabling the members 3, 5 to be interconnected and movable with respect to one another, as also apparent to a person skilled in the art, without departing the scope of the present invention.
Finally, the separated configuration of the corner packing protector 1 is achieved when the first member 3 is no longer interconnected with the second member 5, as better shown in Figures 3, 6, and 13.
According to the first preferred embodiment of the invention, the first and second members 3, 5 are preferably identical, as better shown in Figures 2 and and as demonstrated by comparing Figure 9 to Figure 10, so that both or either two of a same kind, whether "first" or "second" members 3, 5, can be used to form the corner packing protector 1. Hence, instead of having two different moulds for manufacturing the first and second members 3, 5 respectively, only one mould can be used to produce the two members 3, 5 required for a same corner packing protector 1.
It is worth mentioning that the first and second members 3, 5 of the corner packing protector 1 need not be identical, as better shown in Figures 11 to 16.
However, having identical first and second members 3, 5 as shown in Figures 1 to 10 is preferred for the aforementioned reasons and so as to prevent a user from inadvertently combining two members 3, 5 of a kind which are not complementary to one another, such as two of the first members 3 shown in Figure 15 or two of the second members 5 shown in Figure 16.
Figure 16 is an enlarged perspective view of the second member shown in Figure 14.
It is also worth mentioning that each inner face 9 of each member 3, 5 preferably comprises a shoulder 21, as best shown in Figures 3 or 8, extending along the row 13 of alternating projections 15 and recesses 17 so as to structurally strengthen each member 3, 5 and provide an abutment for the projections 15 thereof.
Furthermore, the corner packing protector 1 is preferably made of a lightweight, shock-absorbing, and inexpensive material providing adequate friction between the interconnected rows 13 of alternating projections 15 and recesses 17.
Preferably also, the corner packing protector 1 is made of styrofoam.
As may now be appreciated, the present invention is a substantial improvement over the corner packing protectors known in the art. Firstly, unlike the corner packing protectors available in the trade, the present invention, as explained earlier, is extensible so as to adjust itself to a particular thickness of a given corner to be protected. Therefore, a same corner packing protector 1, according to the invention, can be used with different corners of different thicknesses. This is not possible with what is known in the art since separate corner packing protectors having different sizes must be used for different corners having different thicknesses. The present invention is also advantageous in that it is easily and rapidly operable. Furthermore, the corner packing protector 1 according to the present invention is easy to manufacture and inexpensive to produce. Moreover, the present invention is strong enough to be long-lasting and be used several times while being inexpensive enough to be disposable.
Of course, numerous modifications could be made to the above-described embodiments without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
