Abstract
A livestock feeding regimen which increases the amount of beneficial omega fatty acids expressed in milk from lactating animals, i.e. dairy cattle and goats. A
further embodiment of the invention is the meat from livestock animals fed under the same or similar feeding regimes and containing the same beneficial omega fatty acids. The invention includes a comprehensive system of combining specific fish meal/oil dietary supplements, sodium bentonite (clay) and particular herd management techniques for achieving enhanced levels of beneficial omega fatty acids in milk and meat. Dairy cattle, goats and other lactating animals are fed a special supplement containing cold marine fish meal and/or oil known to contain beneficial omega fatty acids and a high fibre diet plus sodium bentonite to prevent microbial degradation of the beneficial omega fatty acids in the rumen.
The beneficial omega fatty acids enhanced liquid milk produced by this invention, and the further processed dairy products, are covered by this invention. Meat from livestock fed under this invention are also covered by this invention. Algae are also an excellent source of beneficial fatty acids as an alternative to fish meals/oil.

DESCRIPTION
INTRODUCTION
There are several forms of compounds known as omega fatty acids that have been shown to be highly beneficial for human health. The beneficial omega fatty acids are found in abundance in cold marine fish, and oils from such fish. It has also been determined that the direct feeding of algae to livestock will produce the same result. Algae are the main source of beneficial fatty acids by fish.
The beneficial omega fatty acids include docasahexaenioc acid (DHA), alpha linolenic acid (LNA) and eicosapentenoic acid (EPA). These are the three main omega fatty acids implicated in healthy effects. The names are derived from the fact the first of several double bonds occurs three carbon atoms away from the terminal end of the carbon chain. LNA is an 18 carbon chain fatty acid with three double bonds and is an important plant based source of omega 3 fatty acids. LNA can only be converted to DHA metabolically to a very limited extent.
DHA has been shown to be very important in brain and eye development. High levels of DHA are required for optimal mental functioning and visual performance. DHA is an extremely important dietary nutrient for infants and children.

The benefits from specific omega fatty acids are well established in the scientific and medical research literature. In the United States patent by Wright et al., a series of studies relating to omega 3 fatty acids and EPA are cited.
A number of patents have been issued for the purpose of enhancing specific beneficial omega fatty acids in foods normally deficient in these compounds. This is usually accomplished by feeding cold marine fish meal and/or oil to the target animals. Wright et al in United States patent 5,932,257 disclose such a use. The source of DHA is cold marine fish meal and oil. In the Wright patent feathermeal is used to prevent microbial breakdown of the DHA in the rumen of the dairy animal. Feathermeal can create a feed with low palatability and livestock will have difficulty eating sufficient feed for good nutrition or production.
Omega 3 eggs are common in stores in Canada. These omega 3 eggs are primarily produced by feeding laying hens a diet enhanced with flaxseed.. Gold Circle farm eggs containing the omega 3 DHA/EPA compounds are widely sold in stores in the United States.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The instant invention provides a means of producing milk from lactating animals, i.e. dairy cows and goats, enhanced with beneficial omega fatty acids by adopting a holistic approach to feeding and managing the lactating animal. The use of the described feeding and management regimen eliminates the need for feathermeal or other unpalatable substances as a rumen by-pass agent. The feeding system provides health benefits to the target lactating animals and produces milk with the required levels of beneficial omega fatty acids to promote human health.

production of milk has either remained the same or the farmer has achieved higher levels of production with lower butterfat levels.
The uniqueness of the instant invention is the combination of known dietary supplements containing cold marine fish meal and/or oil or algae, combined with clay (sodium bentonite) and the management regimen of feeding the dietary supplement to the target animals with high fiber diets, i.e., corn silage, which results in elevated levels of beneficial omega fatty acids in the milk.
Although a wide range of clay materials can be used, the clay must be of feed grade for the target animal. A preferred source of clay is sodium bentonite.
Milk products made from milk produced by this invention will have significant levels of beneficial omega fatty acids. Algae containing the appropriate amounts of beneficial omega fatty acids may be substituted for part of the cold marine fish meal or oil in the feed formula.

1. A process for feeding livestock a dietary formula consisting of cold marine fish meal and/or oil and/or algae containing beneficial omega fatty acids, clay and a high fibre diet.
2. A process as described in claim 1 where the dietary formula is comprised of the following range of ingredients:

4. A process as described in claim 1 where the dietary supplement is comprised of the following specific ingredients:
Mehadden meal 250 g Herring meal 250 Barley 120 soyhulls 212 Quackgrass or brome grass 40 kelp 40 sodium bentonite 40 HC plus Premix 25 Hi Boot salt 10 Vitamin E 5 Magox 4 Vitamin ADE 2 Apple Flavour 2 1,000 g

5. A process as described in claim 1 where the high fiber diet consists of corn silage, hay , oats or a combination thereof.
6. A process as described in claim 1 where the clay is sodium bentonite.

7. A liquid milk product produced by the process of claims 1-6.
8. A liquid milk product produced by the process of claims 1-6 where the liquid milk product is milk, buttermilk, egg nog, flavoured milk beverages.
9. A liquid milk product as in claims 7 or 8 where the milk is produced by a cow or a goat.
10. A solid milk product produced by the process of claims 1-6.
11. A solid milk product produced by the process of claims 1-6 where the solid milk product is cheese, yogurt, ice cream, cottage cheese or sour cream.
12. A solid milk product as in claims 10-11 where the milk is produced by a cow or a goat.
13. A meat product produced by feeding livestock by the process in claims 1-6.
14. A meat product as in claim 13 produced from cattle, veal. or goats.
