Abstract

A "rotor hanger" device for alleviating or eliminating the downward pull on drive rods in an oil or gas well is inserted in-line with a tubing string. At surface prior to this insertion, an orbiting sub is connected to the top end of the stator, and the rotor is kept backed out of the stator and the orbiting sub. A six foot long drive rod is then connected to the rotor. Next, a bearing housing is joined to the orbiting sub by sliding the drive rod through the orbiting sub, thereby sliding the rotor into the stator. Once the bearing housing is threaded to the top end of the orbiting sub, the assembly may be lifted and installed into the well bore. The present device is used to space the rotor within the stator, and to space or stabilize the top end of any pump in the casing. An on-off tool is provided at the top end of the rotor hanger to provide a connection between the sucker rods and the bearing assembly, and hence to ultimately transfer drive to the drive rod.
The on-off tool and sucker rods can be kept snug by pulling on the rods to provide a slight tension.

THE NEED TO STOP THE DOWNWARD PULL ON TI-IE DRIVE RODS, FROM THE ROTOR IN A PROGRESSIVE CAV1'TY PUIVSP APPLICATION, IS
WELL KNOWN IN THE PETROLEUM INDUSTRY, AT THE TIME OF THE
INSTALLATION, OF TFIE PC PUMP, INTO THE WELL BORE, OUR B,OTOR
HANOER MUST BE LNSE.RTED IN-LINE WITH THE TUBING STRING, TO
SEPARATE THE PC RU ~urz FROM THE DRIVE RODS.
THE ROTOR WILL BE INSERTED INTp THE STATOR ON SURFACE, WITH THE ROTOR BACKED OUT (pppRO~ 6. FT.). WI? CONNECT THE
ORBITTING SUB TO 'rI-IE TOP END OF THE STATOR, WITH THE ROTOR
BACKED OUT PAST THE ORB1TTING SUB, THEN THE 6 FT~ D2«= ROD CAN
BE CONNECTED TO THE ROTOR. THE BEARING HOUSING I5 CONNECTED TO
T kiE ORBITTING SUB BY SLIDING '!'H.E dFT ~~~r' R.OD THROUGI-i T,PIE SUB, AT THE SAME TIME MOVING THE ROTOR IN 1'O THE STATOR THE
RECO~ED AMOUNT AND THREADING THE BEARING- HOUS1.NG TO TOP
END OF THE ORBITTING SUB. THIS ASSEMBLY CAN BE LIFTED ANI7 INSTALLED INTO WELL BORE.
TI-~ EXCALIBRE STABILIZER TOOL WTLL BE USED TO SPACE THE
ROTOR LENGTH IN TI-~ STATOR AND ALSO STABILIZE THE TOP END OF
THE PUMP IN TI-iE CASING. (DEPENDING ON CUSTOMER) THE EXCAfaIBRE TYPE 'S' TUBING DRAIN OR OTHER PRODUCER
WLLL ALSO BE USED TO SPACE THE ROTOR, WITH THESE ACCESSORIES IN LINE IN THE TUBING STRING AND
THE RQTOR CORRECTLY SPACED IN THE ASSEMBLY', NOW THE REST OF
T HITUBING STRrNG CAN HE INSTALLED TNTO THE WELL BORE. WHEN ALL
~I'I-~ TUBING HAS BEEN INSTALLED AND THE ANCHOR SET, NOW TT~E
'~'-" ~~'~DRIVE RODS CAN BE INSTALLED.
THE TOP END OF OIJR ROTOR HANGER ~+q3,A, SPECIAL DESIGNED
ON-OFF TOOL THAT WILL BE CONNECTED TO TI-CE l7RCVE RODS, AND DRIVE
THE RODS IN A ROTATIONAL DTRECTION. THIS I5 DONE By SIMPLY
.RUNNING DOWN THE INSIDE QF THE TUBING WITH A SPECIAL FEMALE
ADAPTER AND LATC'EIING OVER TOP OF A DRIVE PRONG ON TI-~ TOP END
OF THE BEARING HOUSING. WHEN INSTALLED SLIGHT TI3NSION CAN BE
PULLED INTO 'THE RODS TO 1CEEP TI3EM ANb THE ON-OFF TOOL SNUG.

ADVANTAGES OF THE ROTOR HANGER
1) TAKES AWAY TH,E A~1AL LOAD FROM THE DR1VE RODS WHICH
WILL 6TRENTGHE1~ TgE RODS.
2) WILL REDUCE ~BRATION BETWEEN THE RODS AND THE TUBING
WHICH CAUSES BREAKAGE OP ONE OR THE OTHER.
3) REDUCES TH,~ LOAD ON THE TOP DRIVE BY TAKING .A~W,A~Y THE
DOWN WARD PULL OF THE ROTOR
4) NO LONGER ,A NEED TO DO A TOtICH OFF TI~'E TAG SA,~ AND SPACE
THE ROTOR, AS THE ROTOR WIL.I. AREADY BE LOCATED IN THE
STATOR THE PROPER AMOUNT BY THE ROTOR ,HANGER
