Abstract

A network, such as the Internet, having a plurality of high-priority routers which permit emergency messages to be transmitted between terminals connected with the network. The routers each include a plurality of high-priority queues into which emergency messages designated as having a high priority are stored for immediate handling by the router. Each router also includes a regular priority queue in which data messages that do not include a high-priority designation are stored for handling by the router. Accordingly, when an emergency message having a high-priority designation is sent via the network, each router recognizes the priority of the data message and handles it in an expedited manner relative to the regular non-priority messages.
Thereby, the network can transfer emergency messages in an expedited manner for delivery at a receiving terminal.

Claims (18)

1. A method for transmitting an emergency communication over a network having a plurality of high-priority nodes, comprising:
receiving a communication at a high-priority node;
identifying the communication as an emergency communication; and transmitting the emergency communication to a next high-priority node before forwarding any previously received, currently waiting or subsequently received non-emergency communications.
2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the emergency communication is a request for emergency services.
3. The method according to claim 2, wherein the emergency services include at least one of fire, police, and medical.
4. The method according to claim 1, wherein the communication is identified as an emergency communication based on a high priority designating portion of the communication.
5. The method according to claim l, wherein the communication is identified as an emergency communication based on an address of a destination terminal to which the communication is directed.
6. The method according to claim 5, wherein the addresses are transmitted to the plurality of high-priority nodes from at least one centralized server.
7. The method according to claim 1, further comprising storing the emergency communications in a high-priority queue that is separate from a queue for storing non-emergency messages.
8. The method according to claim 1, wherein the emergency communications can include one of a plurality of priority levels, whereby emergency communications having a higher priority are transmitted before emergency communications having a lower priority.
9. A recording medium that stores a control program for use by a high-priority routing apparatus, the recording medium including instructions for controlling the high-priority routing apparatus to:
receive a communication;

identify the communication as an emergency communication; and transmit the emergency communication before forwarding any previously received, currently waiting or subsequently received non-emergency communication.
10. The recording medium according to claim 9, wherein the emergency communication is a request for emergency services.
11. The recording medium according to claim 10, wherein the emergency services include at least one of fire, police, and medical.
12. The recording medium according to claim 9, wherein the communication is identified as an emergency communication based on a high-priority designating portion of the communication.
13. The recording medium according to claim 9, wherein the communication is identified as an emergency communication based on an address of a destination terminal to which the communication is directed.
14. The recording medium according to claim 9, further including instructions for controlling the high-priority routing apparatus to store the emergency communication in a high-priority queue that is separate from a queue for storing non-priority messages.
15. A method for transmitting an emergency communication over a network having a plurality of high-priority nodes, comprising:
receiving a request for services of at least one of a fire, police or ambulance emergency service at a high priority node;
transmitting the request to a next high-priority node before forwarding any previously received, currently waiting or subsequently received communication;
and repeating the steps of receiving and transmitting as necessary until finally forwarding the request to an emergency service terminal.
16. The method according to claim 15, further comprising identifying the request as an emergency communication based on a high-priority designating portion of the communication.
17. The method according to claim 15, further comprising identifying the request as an emergency communication based on an address of a destination terminal to which the communication is directed.
18. The method according to claim 15, further comprising storing the request in a high-priority queue that is separate from a queue for storing non-priority messages.
