Abstract

A mobile electric measuring device with a housing box, receiving, in the interior, device components required for the operation of the measuring device, and with an operator interface for complete operation of the measuring device and for reading the measuring results, wherein the operator interface is formed as an operating unit separate from the housing box and the measuring device can be operated remote from the housing box. The operating unit is formed as a flat module with a flat monitor and can at the same time be used as a protective cover when correspondingly attached (backside to the outside) to the housing box. It thus takes over the protective function for the operating elements.

Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a mobile electric 30 measuring device with a housing box, receiving in the interior device components necessary for operation of the measuring device, and with an operator interface for operating the measuring device.
Backaround of the Invention Electric measuring devices, especially larger size measuring devices as are required for monitoring and measuring telecommunications signals, have a housing box with an integrated operator interface which conventionally comprises input elements such as an alphanumeric keyboard, function keys, switch, trackball, touch pad, microphone etc. as well as output elements such as numeric and alphanumeric displays, character-oriented or graphic monitors, speakers etc. in order to be able to perform measurements with the measuring device on site. These measuring devices often have a relatively high weight and, moreover, must be placed, for the measuring step, on locations that are difficult to access. Handling is thus difficult and uncomfortable for the person operating the measuring device, for example, when used in shafts, at measuring locations that are high above, etc.
Measuring devices with integrated operator interface or completely without operator interface are known which can be remote-controlled by a data channel so that the device operation can be performed away from the measuring location. Remote-control devices however are usually r stationarily mounted on the measuring location and not suitable for a mobile use.
For example, from U.S. Patent No. 5,794,164, a vehicle computer system is known which has a stationary base unit within the vehicle into which different storage media can be inserted via one end face. In front of this end face, a removable front plate with operating elements is provided via which the computer can be operated. In addition, visual data can be output by means of an LCD display on the front plate. The computer can also be connected with an external and remotely arranged monitor in order to make data of different vehicles visible on this vehicle.
From U.S. Patent No. 5,793,621, an uninterruptible power supply with a removable display and control module is disclosed. The module is located in a cutout on one end face and has a display unit with which it can monitor the operativeness of the power supply.
In U.S. Patent No. 3,757,218, an electric test instrument is described which has a measuring head that is connected by a line to the test instrument and has a tip on one end and a small monitor on the opposite end in order to be able to read the measured voltage and resistance values therewith. The measuring head itself is supported in a recess of the housing of the test instrument. An operation of the measuring device via the measuring head is not possible.
No measuring device is known which is suitable for performing measurements, wherein the exclusive operation as well as the display of measuring results and also of ~ 3 possible measuring evaluations takes place remotely from the measuring device.
Summary of the Invention The present invention has therefore the object to propose an electrical measuring device that is improved with respect to its handling and in which the operator interface can be separated from the actual measuring device and still make a mobile use possible.
Accordingly, the mobile electric measuring device configured according to the invention has an operator interface which is formed as an operating unit separate from the housing box and which makes possible an operation of the measuring device remote from the housing box. In this context, the operator' interface comprises elements which are used for reading the measuring results and for operating the device. The operating unit may comprise a monitor which can be used for controlling the device as well as for representing the measuring results (touch screen) or a monitor and all operating elements (alphanumeric keyboard, function keys) or a point matrix display and all operating elements (alphanumeric keyboard, function keys) . Preferably, the operating unit is embodied as a flat module with a flat monitor which comprises a large surface area display on one flat side with integrated or separate operating elements. An operator interface configured accordingly, in which the connection to the housing box can be realized by data transmission by means of infrared radiation, radio signals, light wave guides or metallic cable, has the great advantage that the measuring device can be arranged in close proximity to the devices to be measured, wherein the weight of the measuring device does not play such a great roll anymore and, in addition, the operating comfort is significantly improved because the operator can perform the measurement by means of the operating unit remote from the measuring device, for example, without disturbance by sunlight, a tight spatial environment of the measuring location, accessibility of the measuring location only by a ladder etc.
According to a further advantageous embodiment, the housing box has securing elements for securing the operating unit on the housing box. This makes it possible that the operator interface, inasmuch as this is currently useful for the application, can be operated directly on the housing box in the conventional way. According to a further advantageous embodiment, the operating unit can be secured for transportation on the housing box with the front side (operating side) facing the housing box. This eliminates the protective cover for the operating interface conventionally provided in measuring devices of this kind.
So that the operating unit, especially during transport of the measuring device, is protected and does not interfere during transport, it is integrated into a recess in the housing box and advantageously does not project with its outer contour past the outer contour of the housing box.
This cutout can also be provided as a housing shaft wherein the arrangement of the operating unit as a housing cover makes reduced dimensions possible.
Brief Description of the Drawings In the following, the invention will be illustrated in more detail with the aid of one embodiment. It is shown in:

Fig. 2 the measuring device with an operator interface for operating the device secured on the housing box;
Fig. 3 the measuring device with the operator interface secured on the housing box in transport position in its function as a protective cover; and Fig. 4 a cross-section of the housing box and the operator interface secured on the housing box.
Description of the Preferred Embodiments Fig. 1 shows the measuring device 1 with the housing box 2 and the operator interface 3, which are connected to one another by a cable 4 in the shown embodiment. The housing box 2 has a recess 5 in which the operator interface 3 can be secured. In the embodiment, the operator interface 3 is provided in a flat housing with a touch screen 6a which makes the complete operation of the measuring device possible as well as displays the measuring results in a measuring device-specific way. It is also possible to separate the operating elements (for example, a keyboard) and the monitor for displaying results from one another, as indicated in 6b.
Fig. 2 shows the measuring device 1 with the operator interface 3 which is secured in the recess 5 of the housing box 2 such that an operation of the measuring device is possible via the operating surface 6a or 6b. The cable 4 can be mounted in a special receptacle that is hidden within the cover 7.

Fig . 3 corresponds to Fig . 2 with the di f f erence that the operator interface 3 is secured such that the backside 8 is visible from the exterior and the operating surface 6a and 6b is thus protected during transport.
Fig. 4 shows the arrangement and fixation of the operator interface 3 on the housing box 2. Fig. 4a shows a schematic cross-section of the entire measuring device, wherein the components of the measuring device contained in the interior of the housing box 2 are not represented in order to simplify matters. As has been mentioned before, the operator interface 3 is securable in a recess 5 within the housing box 2 so that the outer contour of the interface 3 does not project past the outer contour of the housing box 2 and is secured harmonically and in a non-interfering and protected way with respect to the transportation. For this purpose, pins 9 are arranged in the recess 5 on the housing box 2 which pins engage corresponding cutouts 10 of the operator interface 3. This fixation is illustrated again on an enlarged scale in Fig. 4c. For an additional securing of the operator interface 3 further bores 12 are provided in the upper area in the vicinity of the grip 11 which bores are engaged by pins 13 in order to secure the operator interface 3 by a snap connection. This securing arrangement is illustrated in Fig. 4b also on an enlarged scale.
The fixation can also be realized by a hook-and-loop strap or other suitable fastening means.

Claims (7)

1. A mobile electric measuring device with a housing box, receiving in the interior device components required for operation of the measuring device, and with an operator interface for operating the measuring device, characterized by a separate operating unit detachable from the housing box as an operator interface by means of which the measuring device can be used remote from the housing box, wherein the operating unit comprises operating elements for operating the measuring device for performing measurements and/or measurement evaluations as well as display elements for representing the measurement results and/or measurement evaluations.
2. An electric measuring device according to claim 1, characterized in that the operating unit is embodied as a flat module with a flat monitor that comprises on one flat side a large surface area display with integrated or separate operating elements.
3. An electric measuring device according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the housing box comprises securing elements for securing the operating unit on the housing box.
4. An electric measuring device according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the operating unit can be secured on the housing box with the front side or the backside facing the housing box.
5. An electric measuring device according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the operating unit can be integrated into a recess in the housing box.
6. An electric measuring device according to claim 5, characterized in that the operating unit in the recess does not project with its outer contour past the outer contour of the housing box.
7. The use of a housing box with an operating unit, separate and detachable from the housing box, for the device components arranged in the interior of the housing box as a non-stationary electric measuring device for performing measurements initiated by the operating unit remote from the housing box as well as representations of measuring results and/or measuring evaluations.
