3. BUSINESS. METHOD
There are at least several methods of operating the above invention as a business to generate revenues to the operator, which may be in combination or separate, for example:
~ escalator - operator may sell, lease or permit third parties to advertise or promote products or messages for a fee;
~ escalator - operator may permit a third party to promote these services to other parties, for a fee; and ~ operators of premises where the escalators are installed may pay a fee to the escalator operator for the added safety feature of the invention or for the ability to display messages on the handrail.
4. THE PRIOR ART
My Invention is an improvement over the prior art, which would not be obvious to a skilled practitioner in the industry. For example, the prior art consists of messages or advertisements that can be placed upon the riser portion of the tread of the escalator.
My invention typically provides more messages that are readable, as they are more at eye-level. In addition, as they are on the handrail, they provide less of ~ a distraction and safety hazard to the viewer, and can be read from more than one (head-on) angle.
Provisional Patent -2-IMPROVEMENTS OVER PRIOR ART
The Invention:
1. provides a surface area for messages of all types;
2. generates revenue for the operator without substantially increasing manufacturing costs;
3. is inexpensive to include messages;
4. provides extra grip for holding the handrail; and 5. provides merchants or others with another mechanism for advertising.
All of the above comprises my invention.

Claims
EMBODIMENT #1 In a first embodiment, the invention is designed to be applied directly to the surface of existing escalator handrails. The messaging or logo can be applied in strips of any length (less than the length of the "endless loop"
of the handrail) and in any width (less than the width of the top surface of said handrail). Messages or logos can be applied with adhesive or bonding material directly to the surface of an existing escalator handrail.
EMBODIMENT #2 In a second embodiment, an escalator handrail is comprised of standard, dark rubber or similar substance. At any time during or after the manufacture stage, this escalator handrail is then stamped or imprinted with the messaging or logo giving it either a raised or indented imprint, or both and, optionally, later colored or treated, and then installed in the normal fashion.
EMBODIMENT #3 In a third embodiment, an escalator handrail is comprised of flexible rubber or similar substance. At any time during or after the manufacture stage, an electronic or similarly pre-configured messaging display apparatus is inserted or incorporated into the escalator handrail such that it is possible to display messages or graphic images on the visible surface of said handrail. This messaging display apparatus is operatively connected to a microprocessor incorporated in the escalator itself or at a location separate from the escalator. The microprocessor is programmed to transmit messages to the display apparatus incorporated in the escalator handrail causing it to display text or graphic images, or both, while in normal operation. The escalator handrail is installed on the escalator.
