Abstract
A cutting apparatus comprising a cutting blade with round corners, mounted in an offset manner on the flattened indented end of a shaft, which is connected to a power source at the other end, can be used for severing the urethane bed which bonds the windshield to the frame of a motor vehicle.
Description
1 Field of the Invention 2 This invention relates to a cutting apparatus, for severing the urethane 3 bed securing a glass windshield to the frame of a motor vehicle, with a flat, 4 round cornered, cutting edge blade, mounted on a recipient shaft, in an offset manner.
Description of the Prior Art 8 The essential step in the removal of a windshield from the frame of a 9 motor vehicle is to sever the urethane bed bonding the windshield to the 1o frame. Presently, there are various devices available in the market that can be 11 used to accomplish the extraction, usually with penetrating blades driven 12 manually or by power tools, such as air guns.
14 Patent no. 2,191,511 involves an unit of cutting assembly comprising a reciprocating air gun, connected to a shaft at one end for the purpose of 16 reciprocation. At the other end of the shaft, a receiving slot accommodates the 1~ mounting of a blade . The blade has a straight front cutting edge at least 1s inches in width. The blade when mounted to the shaft is reciprocated in and 19 out of the urethane bed to sever the bonding between the windshield and the motor vehicle.
a 22 In embodiment aforesaid, the slot cuts into the middle of the end of the 23 shaft for mounting the blade. Such a construction has a disadvantage, namely 1 that in the confined space between the windshield and the dashboard of the 2 motor vehicle, the end of the shaft receiving the cutting blade, in practice, 3 makes contact with the windshield or the dashboard, thereby possibly 4 shattering the glass or damaging the dashboard while the shaft is reciprocated by the air gun. The slot also requires the blade to have a fixed thickness so that 6 the blade can be fitted therein. Because of the slot, the blade cannot be 7 mounted in an offset manner to get into the confined space between the 8 dashboard and the windshield.
The method of severing the urethane bed in the embodiment aforesaid 11 is by pressing the blade into the bed, withdrawing it and repeating the steps at 12 the next cut position along the bed. The construction of the blade limits the i3 movement of the blade in severing the urethane bed and is disadvantageous 14 because the cut may not be continuous and may depend largely upon the placement of the next cut.
4 In the present invention, the urethane bed is severed by a cutting apparatus comprising:
7 a flat and spade shaped steel blade with a cutting edge and round 8 corners and a shank at the other end, having holes therein to fix nuts and 9 bolts;
11 a steel cylindrical shaft about 2 cm. in diameter and at least 18 cm. i n 12 total length, with an inner end with a flattened, indented upper half on top 13 and the semi-cylindrical bottom having a hollow, with holes therein to affix 14 nuts and bolts, and a cylindrical outer end with outward connector for connecting to a power source, such as an air gun. The transition from the 16 cylindrical to the flat indented upper half of the shaft is at 90 degrees;
1~
is The shank of the blade is mounted onto the flattened, indented end of 19 the shaft in an offset manner and is fixed thereto by means of nuts and bolts.
2o The cylindrical end of the shaft with its outward connector is fixed to the 2i power source, which when activated, reciprocates the shaft and thereby the 22 blade.
1 The present invention also provides for a method of cutting the 2 urethane bed between a motor vehicle and its frame which comprises:
3 (a) mounting and fixing, with nuts and bolts, the shank of a flat and 4 spade shaped steel blade with a cutting edge and round corners, in an offset 5 manner, to the flattened, indented upper half of an inner end of a steel 6 cylindrical shaft about 2 cm. in diameter and at least 18 cm. in total length, the 7 bottom half of this end being semi-cylindrical and having a hollow, with 8 holes therein to affix nuts and bolts;
7 a flat and spade shaped steel blade with a cutting edge and round 8 corners and a shank at the other end, having holes therein to fix nuts and 9 bolts;
11 a steel cylindrical shaft about 2 cm. in diameter and at least 18 cm. i n 12 total length, with an inner end with a flattened, indented upper half on top 13 and the semi-cylindrical bottom having a hollow, with holes therein to affix 14 nuts and bolts, and a cylindrical outer end with outward connector for connecting to a power source, such as an air gun. The transition from the 16 cylindrical to the flat indented upper half of the shaft is at 90 degrees;
1~
is The shank of the blade is mounted onto the flattened, indented end of 19 the shaft in an offset manner and is fixed thereto by means of nuts and bolts.
2o The cylindrical end of the shaft with its outward connector is fixed to the 2i power source, which when activated, reciprocates the shaft and thereby the 22 blade.

(b) connecting the outward connector of the outer end of the shaft to a 11 power source, such as an air gun;
13 (c) with the blade mounted on the flattened, indented upper half of the 14 shaft facing the dashboard when cutting the urethane between the dashboard and the windshield or facing the windshield or the roof when cutting the 16 urethane bed between the windshield and the roof, activating the power 1~ source to reciprocate the blade into the urethane bed to make an incision 18 therein, and guiding the blade along the length of the urethane bed and 19 severing it with the round corner of the blade in a lateral continuous motion.
