Abstract

A marking tool for marking rows in a garden has a handle in which an implement at an one end of the handle in which the handle extends longitudinally from the implement. The implement includes a guide element and at least ground engaging element spaced laterally on the implement from the guide element for engaging a ground surface. The guide element and the ground engaging element may have a sleeve such that they may be slidably mounted on the implement. The implement is pulled along the ground surface indicating a first row such that the guide element indicated a first line and the ground engaging element indicates a second line on the ground surface. Then a second row is indicated by pulling the implement along the ground surface such that the guide element follows the second line, a third line is then indicated by the ground engaging element such that the rows are spaced equidistantly apart whether or not they are straight.

Description

ROW MARKING TOOL
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a tool and is particularly concerned with marking rows in gardens.
BACKGROUND
When planting seeds or the like in a garden it is preferred by a gardener to have even rows which are well marked such that the seed can be planted and the plants can grow in substantially straight lines, thereby utilising the most space for a garden.
Conventionally marking rows in gardens is done by placing posts at ends of a garden and then attaching strings to each respective post. This method is generally time consuming, in that a person has to properly measure the position of the post and the post may be placed unequally thereby providing uneven rows for the garden.
SUMMARY
An object of the present invention is to provide a row marking tool for marking rows in gardens and the like.
According to the present invention there is provided a marking tool comprising:
a handle;
an implement at an end of the handle in which the handle extend longitudinally therefrom;
a guide element on the implement; and, at least one ground engaging element spaced laterally on the implement from the guide element for engaging a ground surface.
Conveniently the implement is an elongate shaft which extends outwards from the end of the handle and is substantially perpendicular thereto.
It is Preferred that one of the respective ground engaging elements is located at a respective end of the shaft spaced equidistantly from the end of the shaft relative to the guide element.
Conveniently the ground engaging elements can be solidly fastened to the implement.
Preferably the ground engaging elements are slidably coupled to the implement such that the ground engaging elements can be moved laterally on the shaft and fastened in an appropriate position.
Preferably each of the ground engaging elements is mounted on a sleeve which is arranged to be slidably fastened to the implement.
Alternatively, movement any substantial lateral movement of the ground engaging elements is acceptable.
Conveniently the ground engaging elements are triangular shaped having a pointed end for engaging the ground surface.
Preferably the guide element can be a ground engaging element.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a tool for marking rows in gardens comprising:
a handle;
an implement at an end of the handle in which the handle extend longitudinally therefrom;
a guide element on the implement; and, a ground engaging element spaced laterally on the implement from the guide element for engaging a ground surface;
wherein the implement is pulled along the ground surface indicating a first row such that the guide element indicated a first line and the ground engaging element indicates a second line on the ground surface;
wherein a second row is indicated by pulling the implement along the ground surface such that the guide element follows the second line, a third line is then indicated by the ground engaging element;
wherein the rows are spaced equidistantly apart whether or not they are straight.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate exemplary embodiments of the present invention:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a first embodiment of the implement.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the implement of figure 1.
Figure 3 is a partial front elevational view of a second embodiment of the implement of the present invention.
Figure 4 illustrates in a schematic view, a use of the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Referring to the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated a row marking tool 1 which is used by a gardener or the like for marking rows in a garden.
The rows are used to plant seeds such that the rows of the garden are equal.
The tool comprises a handle 3. The handle is an elongate tube and has a first end 5 for engagement by the user and a second end 7, opposite the first end. An implement 9 is coupled to the second end of the handle and is arranged to engage a ground surface 11. The implement is an elongate shaft 13 which is generally perpendicular to the handle such that the handle extends longitudinally therefrom. The second end of the handle is located at substantially the middle of the shaft such that the shaft extends laterally in respective directions from the handle. The shaft is has outer ends 15 which is located equidistant from the handle, thereby providing a substantially T-shape tool.
Alternatively, the implement can be releaseably mounted to the handle by a sleeve 15. The sleeve is mounted on the implement and is arranged to receive the handle in which the handle is fastened by a set screw 17, as best shown in figure 3.
Coupled on the implement is a guide element 19. The guide element is located at one of the outer ends of the shafts such that the guide element can engage the ground surface. Coupled on a respective end of the shaft spaced laterally thereon from the guide element is a ground engaging element 21. The guide element and the ground engaging element face downwards relative to the ground surface such that the implement can be pulled along the ground and guide element and the ground engaging element can engage the ground surface.
The ground engaging element and the guide element are triangular shaped tines 23 which have a point 25 for digging into the ground surface thereby marking the rows.
Alternately the ground engaging element and the guide element can be slidably coupled to the shaft, as best shown in figure 3, therein each element comprises a sleeve member 27 which is arranged to fit around the shaft and is tightened in position in the shaft by a set screw 29.
Alternatively there is more than one ground engaging element such that more than one row can be marked by the tool.
In operation, as best shown in figure 4, a user pulls the implement along the ground surface such that the elements engage soil 31. As the implement is pulled along the soil, a first row 33 is marked by the elements. A first line 35 is indicated by the guide element and a second line 37 is indicated by the ground engaging element, thereby defining the first row. The user then pulls the implement along the soil such that the guide element is located with the second line indicated by the ground engaging element in the first row. The guide element follows the second line such that the ground engaging element indicates a third line 39 such that a second row 41 is marked by the tool and so forth until the garden is laid out in a series equal rows 43. The tool provides a user with equal rows, which are preferably straight, but even if the rows are not straight the have a spacing 45 which are equal.
While one embodiment of the present invention has been described in the foregoing, it is to be understood that other embodiments are possible within the scope of the invention. The invention is to be considered limited solely by the scope of the appended claims.
