Abstract

The invention includes system (100) for modifying ice adhesion strength of ice adhered to any surface. The system includes an electrode (106) that is electrically insulated from the surface (104a) of a material (104) and a DC source (109), e.g., a battery, coupled to the material (104) and the electrode (106). The source (109) generates a DC bias to an interface between the ice (102) and the surface (104a) when the ice (102) completes the circuit.

The material (104) is conductive or is doped as a semiconductor so that the DC bias applies a voltage to the interface which modifies the ice adhesion strength selectively as compared to the ice adhesion strength with substantially zero bias voltage at the interface. The system preferably includes an electrically insulating material (108) disposed between the surface (104a) and the electrode (106); the insulating material (108) substantially conformal to the surface (104a) and the electrode (106).
