Abstract

A ball mark repair tool is comprised of a body having a pair of prongs and wherein a circular cavity is formed in the body and has a central elevated magnetic element secured on a bottom surface thereof. A metal disc ball marker is retained in the cavity by the elevated magnetic element and removable therefrom by applying downward finger pressure on the ball marker element offset from a central part thereof to tilt the marker in the cavity on the elevated magnetic element and permitting it to be pushed outwards for removal therefrom.

Description

GOLF BALL MARK REPAIR TOOL HAVING
MAGNETICALLY RETAINED BALL MARKER
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to a ball mark repair tool having a ball marker removably secured thereto and which is easily removable therefrom by a finger pressure and sliding motion. The removal may also be effected by a single hand.
BACKGROUND ART
Various golf ball mark repair tools are known and typical examples thereof can be found in U.S. Patents 4,984,790 and 5,322,130. It is also known to retain a ball marker, which is usually a disc-shaped marker, in a cavity of the body of the tool by magnetic attraction. The cavity is usually formed with a flat bottom wall which may have a wafer of magnetic material and the ball marker is made of magnetically attractable metal and is retained in the cavity zo by magnetic force. A disadvantage of such arrangement is that it is difficult to remove the ball marker from the body of the repair tool. Consequently, the user usually does not reposition the ball marker in the cavity due to its difficulty in removal as the marker needs to be accessed 2s several times during a game of golf. In order to facilitate removal of the ball marker, openings are made leading into the larger cavity so as to provide a gripping side edge to the ball marker. Furthermore, the ball marker can be made much smaller than the cavity to facilitate its removal by 3o inserting a fingernail between the ball marker and the cavity.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
It is a feature of the present invention to 35 provide a ball mark repair tool having a ball marker which is easy to remove by applying finger pressure and sliding motion on the marker to cause the marker to tilt and slide out of the cavity by finger action and usually by using a single hand.
According to the above feature, from a broad aspect, the present invention provides a ball mark repair tool comprising a body having a front surface and a rear surface. A pair of prongs extend outwardly from an outer edge of the body. A cavity, having a circular contour outer edge, is formed in the front surface. The cavity has a ~o conical bottom surface. A central elevated magnetic element is secured on the bottom surface. The elevated magnetic element has a flat top surface disposed in a plane spaced below the front surface of the body. A metal disc ball marker is retained in the cavity by the elevated magnetic element and removable therefrom by applying downward finger pressure on the ball marker element offset from a central part thereof to tilt the marker in the cavity on the elevated magnetic element and permitting the marker to be pushed outwards in a sliding motion for removal from the zo cavity and using a single hand, if desired.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying z5 drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of the ball mark repair tool of the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a side view of Figure l;
FIG. 3 is a plan view of the body of the ball 3o repair tool of the present invention illustrating the construction of the cavity;
FIG. 4 is a section view along section lines IV-IV of Figure 3;
FIG. 5 is a perspective view showing how the 35 ball marker is tilted in its retaining cavity;
FIG. 6 is an enlarged section view showing how the ball marker is supported and tilted in the cavity; and FIG. 7 is a perspective view showing how the ball marker is pushed out of the cavity using a single hand.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
Referring now to the drawings, and more particularly to Figures 1 to 4, there is shown generally at the ball mark repair tool of the present invention. It ~o is comprised essentially of a body 11 having a front surface 12 and a rear surface 13. A retention clip 14 may be secured to the rear surface 13. A pair of prongs 15 extend outwardly from an outer edge of the body and is usually aligned with the longitudinal axis 16 of the repair tool.
An opposed pair of shorter prongs 17 may also project from an opposite surface of the body 11. As hereinshown the body is formed as a large circular disc which is provided with a cavity 18, as better shown in Figures 3 and 4, which has a circular contour outer edge 19.
zo The cavity is formed in the front face 12 of the body.
The cavity 18 has a bottom surface 20 which is herein shown as being conical and sloping upwards to an elevated central portion 21 which is provided with a bore 22, as better seen in Figure 6, to receive therein a 2s magnetic disc-shaped insert element 23. It is also conceivable that the bottom surface 20 be a flat surface with the magnetic disc 23 glued centrally thereon. This would provide the same tilting action of the ball marker 24 as will be described hereinbelow.
3o With additional reference now to Figure 6, it can be seen that the elevated magnetic element 23 has a flat top surface 25 disposed in a plane 26 which is spaced below the plane 27 of the flat front surface 12 of the body 11 whereby to receive the ball marker 24 in the cavity. The ball ss marker 24 is a metal disc having at least the lower surface thereof formed with a magnetically attractable material and the disc is a thin disc which fits within the cavity 18 and rests below or substantially aligned with the outer surface 12 of the body so that it is not accidentally removed therefrom. The body 11 may be constructed of metal, s plastics, or any convenient rigid material. As also shown in Figure 6, the magnetic element 23 may protrude a short distance out of the bore 22 to facilitate tilting of the ball marker 24.
Referring now to Figures 5 to 7, there is ~o illustrated the manner in which the ball marker 24 is removed from its nesting cavity 18 formed in the body 11 of the golf ball mark repair tool 10. As hereinshown, the ball mark repair tool is held between the thumb 30 and the index finger 31 of a user person and by applying downward pressure on the ball marker 24 and offset from the central portion thereof, the ball marker will tilt upwards to its position as illustrated at 24' in Figure 6. As therein shown, the ball marker pivots on an edge of the magnetic element 23 by pushing a portion of the ball marker down on the conical 2o bottom surface 20. The thumb then moves in the direction of arrow 32, as shown in Figure 7, to slide the ball marker 24 out of its nesting cavity 18. It is therefore easy to remove the ball marker using a single hand.
It is within the ambit of the present invention to 25 cover any obvious modifications of the preferred embodiment described herein, provided such modifications fall within the scope of the appended claims.
