Abstract

For fitment into the stuffing box of a centrifugal pump, reciprocating engine, or compressor.
A sealing system comprising of a stationary or adjustable cartridge, stacked with a number of lip seals and an adjustable or stationary sleeve. As the shaft rotates the adjustable sleeve which is attached to the shaft rotates, the lip seals which are mounted inside a stationary housing, seal on the rotating sleeve one lip seal at a time, when one tip seal eventually leaks the adjustable sleeve can be advanced to the next lip seal in line, and full sealing can be achieved without stripping down the apparatus. With the sleeve in a fixed position and the cartridge adjustable the adjustable cartridge can be advanced to the next lip seal in line with the shaft rotating

Title: Multiple Lip Seal Cartridge and Adjustable Sleeve Specifications This invention relates to a device for sealing rotating shafts BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
The requirements is increasing for a better method of sealing fluid inside a rotating shaft at a lower cost, and last for as long a service life as possible, the amount of dismantling needed to expose the lip seal, and the time the equipment is out of service is a ongoing problem. Versions of the lip seal cartridge assembly of this invention address these various needs, as will be described.
GENERAL FEATURES OF THE INVENTION
The aim of the invention is to provide a means for sealing fluid in and around a rotating shaft It is an aim of the invention to achieve a better method as to replace the lip Seal without stripping down the unit.
It is an aim of the invention to achieve a method to replace the lip seal with minimum down time to the unit at little cost.
The invention provides a combined lip seal camidge assembly apparatus, comprising a lip seal cartridge and sleeve for rotating about an axis. The apparatus may be installed in place inside a stuffing box of a centrifugal pump, reciprocating engine or compressor.
Fig 1 shows the lip seal cartridge, the lip seals 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7 are positioned uniformly inside housing 8, housing 8, is held in position inside unit 9, by the use of bolts 10, and is sealed by an elastomer 16, the adjustable sleeve 1 l, is positioned and held in location by set screws 12, and is sealed to the shaft by a dynamic elastomer 13, as shaft 14, rotates the sleeve 11, rotates against the stationary lip seal l, the fluid to be sealed in chamber 15, cannot escape between the interface of the sleeve 1 l, and lip seal 1. Inevitably lip seal 1, will leak between the interface of the sleeve 11, and lip seal I .
Fig 2 shows that sleeve 11, has been moved manually and is now located directly in position with lip seal 2. Sleeve 11, has been advanced to the desired position in relation to lip seal 2, in this location lip seal 2, runs at a point 040" back from where lip seal 1, was previously running.
Inevitably lip seal 2, will leak between the interface of sleeve 1 l, and lip seal 2.
Fig. 3,4,5,6,7 Shows the continuous movement of sleeve 11, as each lip seal leaks.
Sleeve 11, is adjusted by the use of adjustment gauges Z0, each gauge is calibrated to allow a manual adjustment to the sleeve 11, so sleeve I 1, does not wear at the same point with each adjustment. It may be a choice to start the sleeve at lip seal 8, and advance the sleeve inward in the opposite direction as shown in fig 2,3,4,5,6,7.
Fig 8 shows sleeve 1 l, portions of sleeve I 1, have been manufactured to suit the application, portion 17, has a knurled portion for manual adjustment, portion 18, has a hard wear resistant ceramic coating adjacent to where the lip seal makes contact with sleeve I 1, portion 19, is undercut to allow the lip seals that are not in use to have no contact with sleeve 11.
Fig 9 shows that when sleeve 1 l, is moved in a axial direction either way lip seal 2, seals on sleeve 11, before lip seal 1, rides free of sleeve 11, so at no time is the fluid to be contained in chamber 15, allowed to bypass between the sleeve I 1, and any of the lip seals l, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.
Fig 10 shows a shortened version of Fig 1 where only three lip seals are used.
The number of lip seals to be used by this technology is determined by the space available inside and outside of the apparatus.
Fig 11 shows the lip seal cartridge and sleeve installed inside a pump stuffing box.
Fig 12 shows the lip seal cartridge and sleeve installed inside a reciprocating engine.
The Lip Seal Cartridge and Sleeve call be utilized to seal many applications for example:
Compressors, Reciprocating Engines, Gearboxes, Bearings, Pumps, or where a fluid must be sealed inside a rotating shaft or where a fluid must be sealed inside a stationary shaft.
Fig 13 shows sleeve 21, in a fixed position and seal cartridge 22, in a dynamic position, lip seal 23 is in a sealing position against sleeve 21, lip seals 24, and 25, are free from contact with sleeve 21, Fig 14 shows that the lip seal cartridge 22, has advanced so that lip seal 24, is in a sealing position and lip seal 23, and 25, are now free from contact with sleeve 21, Fig 15 shows that the lip seal cartridge 22, has advanced so that lip seal 25, is in a sealing position and lip seal 23, and 24, are now free from contact with sleeve 21, Fig 13 shows the adjusting halt 26, and the locking bolt 27, locking bolt 27, locks against adjusting bolt 26, to ensure a fixed position relevant to each other.
Fig 13 shows a dynamic elastomer 28, and a static elastomer 29, sleeve 21, is locked to the shaft 30, by set screws 31.
Fig 13, 14, and 15 show a method to replace a leaking lip seal while the apparatus is in use and shaft 30, is still rotating.
Fig 13, 14, and I5 uses the same method of sealing as explained in Fig 9.
Fig 13, 14, and 15, only shows the lip seal cartridge in a dynamic position but it may be advantageous for both the lip seal cartridge and also the sleeve to be dynamic, as adjustment could be made in both directions to shorten the length of the apparatus.
The apparatus can be manufactured in corrosion resistant materials such as Stainless Steel, Teflon impregnated graphite, plastics, ect.

Claims (8)

  1. Claim 1. Combine lip seal and sleeve assembly apparatus, comprising a lip seal cartridge housing and an adjustable sleeve adapted for rotation about an axis;
    the lip seals and sleeve components are formed with complementary sealing surfaces;
    the lip seals are so arranged in a line with one another over an area termed the sealing area;
    the sealing area comprises several lip seals in a row over the sealing area, the arrangement thereof being such as to leave a sealing area of substantial length between adjacent lip seals;
    the apparatus is so structured to allow adjustment to the sleeve without leakage from the internal fluid to atmosphere;
    the apparatus is so structured to allow adjustment to the lip seal cartridge with the sleeve in a fixed position to the shaft to allow repairs when the apparatus is in use and the shaft rotating;
    the apparatus is so structured so to allow the sleeve to be advanced to the next lip seal when the previous lip seal shows signs of leaking;
    the apparatus is so structured to allow the axial movement of the sleeve to the next location without sealing at the same point on the sleeve as the previous lip seal;
    the apparatus is so structured so to move the sleeve axial in any direction without the fluid leaking to atmosphere;
    the apparatus is so structured to allow one lip seal to run against the sleeve at any given time;
    the apparatus is so structured that the sleeve is undercut to allow the lip seals not in use to be free of any contact with the sleeve.
    the apparatus is so structured that the sleeve is advanced with calibrated precision to avoid the next lip seal to run on a fretted or worn part of the sleeve.
    the apparatus is so structured that both the sleeve and the lip seal cartridge can be adjusted in regard to each other.
    the apparatus is so structured that the lip seal cartridge can be adjusted with the apparatus operating.
  2. Claim 2. Apparatus of claim 1, wherein the complementary sealing surfaces seal together over the sealing area.
  3. Claim 3. Apparatus of claim 1, wherein the lip seals can be arranged in a linear or horizontal configuration.
  4. Claim 4. Apparatus of claim 1, wherein the apparatus includes a means for advancing the sleeve from one lip seal to the next.
  5. Claim 5. Apparatus of claim 1, wherein the apparatus includes a means for advancing the lip seal cartridge from one lip seal to the next when the shaft is rotating.
  6. Claim 6. Apparatus of claim 1, wherein the apparatus is suitable for installation in a process fluid to be sealed, or in a rotating shaft of a machine that extends through the apparatus, and is so structured as to be suitable for fitment around a rotary shaft.
  7. Claim 7. Apparatus of claim 1, wherein the apparatus includes a means for moving the sleeve forward or backward.
  8. Claim 8. Apparatus of claim 1, wherein the apparatus includes a large portion of the sleeve has been undercut to allow the other lip seals not in use to be free of contact with the sleeve.
