Abstract
A skate sharpening machine for sharpening two blades of a pair at the same time, the machine comprising a rotary table, a skate positioning device for first and second skates along with clamps to clamp the skates in position, a grinding wheel mounted in operative proximity to the rotary table, the grinding wheel being moveable both in height and distance from the rotary table, and a skate blade tracing device, the skate blade tracing device being operatively connected to move the grinding wheel such that each of the first and second skates are sharpened to have an identical curvature.
Description
AUTOMATIC SKATE SHARPENER
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a skate sharpening machine.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The sharpening of skate blades is a well known practice and many different types of machines have been developed to assist in the blade sharpening. Such machines have included rotating grind stones which are stationary while a skate holder is designed to receive and firmly retain a skate. The skate holder is moveable upon a table and the operator of the machine moves the skate blade into contact with the grind stone. Naturally, the quality of the sharpening depends greatly on the skill of the machine operator.
Other machines are also known which will automatically or semi-automatically sharpen a skate blade. In devising such machines, one must take into account that the ice skate blades are of different thicknesses and if proper account is not given to this difference, one lip of the hollow ground will be higher than the other lip.
Generally, each of the known skate sharpening machines is designed to receive a single skate. Again, depending upon the skill of the operator, substantially identical sharpening may be given to both skates. However, in the hands of an inexperienced operator, differences between the two skates may occur.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the present invention to provide a skate sharpening machine in which a pair of skates may each receive an identical sharpening profile.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a skate sharpening machine comprising a rotary table, means for rotating the rotary table, skate positioning means for first and second skates, skate clamping means to clamp the skates on the rotary table, a grinding wheel mounted so as to be able to sharpen blades on the first and second skates, means for moving the grinding wheel, skate blade tracing means, the skate blade tracing means being operatively connected to the means for moving the grinding wheel, the arrangement being such that each of the first and second skates are sharpened to have an identical curvature.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Having thus generally described the invention, reference will be made to the accompanying drawings illustrating an embodiment thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a skate sharpening machine according to the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Referring to the drawings in greater detail, there is illustrated in Figure 1 a skate sharpening machine according to the present invention. The skate sharpening machine is generally designated by reference numeral 10.
Skate sharpening machine 10 includes a rotary table 12 driven in a rotary fashion as indicated by arrow 14 by suitable means (not shown). Skate positioning means 16 are provided for a pair of ice skates generally designated by reference character S.
The apparatus includes a grinding wheel 18 driven by a suitable motor (not shown) and skate clamping means 20 for clamping the skates in position. Thus, the skates S are placed in

Thus, the skates S are placed in
-2-position against the skate positioners 16 and the blades are clamped in place.
Machine 10 will include a grinding wheel height adjustment 22 for changing the height of the grinding wheel depending upon the particular blade being sharpened.
As may be seen, there is also provided a tracer wheel 24 which is diametrically opposed to grinding wheel 18 to permit identical sharpening of both skate blades.
Tracer wheel 24 is connected to grinding wheel 18. Machine 10 also includes a diamond dresser 26 as is conventional in the art.
It will be understood that the above described embodiment is for purposes of illustration and that changes and modifications may be made thereto without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
