Abstract

A vehicle comprising an engine compartment, an opening on the engine compartment and a retractable extension cord apparatus located within the engine compartment. The apparatus has a housing in which the cord is located and a reeling means for allowing movement of the cord inward and outward from the housing. A is mount arranged for mounting the housing in the engine compartment of the vehicle and a plug is located in the engine compartment and attached to the housing having an accessory end in which a plurality of cords can be attached.
An exit portion of the housing is positioned such that the cord directed in a specific direction and at least one eyelet which receives the cord from the exit portion and guides the cord through the engine compartment of the vehicle to the opening of the engine compartment so that the cord can be attached to an outlet for activating accessories. The reeling means is arranged to pull the cord into the housing.
The plug has a cord which allows the plug to be mounted in the engine compartment in an appropriate position so that more than one accessory can be attached. The exit portion is located on the housing in a downward position so that the cord is extracted in a downward direction from the housing and a first eyelet is located below the housing in line with the exit portion to guide the cord, a second eyelet is located at a right angle relative to the first eyelet so that the cord can be guided to the opening defining a grill on the vehicle out of the engine compartment, and the second eyelet is arranged to have an opening smaller than the end of the cord so that the cord does not reel completely into the housing and so that the cord is accessible to an operator.

Description

Retractable Cord For A Motorized Vehicle FIE~p OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to retractable cord for a motorized vehicle which can be connected to an outlet to activate an electric block heater or the like.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Any motorized vehicle, tool or implement has the symptom of being hard to start in extreme cold weather. To combat this challenge, most operators install electric block heaters, battery blankets, battery chargers and interior heaters.
Most operators wind their 20 - 50 foot chord around some exterior object on the vehicle, i.e. grill, bumper, antenna or mirror. Some disconnect the chord each time, only to get it all tangled in the back seat or trunk. There is a need for a vehicle to have a device which enables the operator to supply electricity from the electrical plug-in to the various add-ons that the operator has decided necessary to ensure his or her engine will start after being exposed to cold temperatures, without having to worry about the extension cord when not in use.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a vehicle comprising;
an engine compartment;
an opening on the engine compartment;
and a retractable extension cord apparatus located within the engine compartment having;
a housing in which the cord is located;
a reeling means for allowing movement of the cord inward and outward from the housing;
a mount arranged for mounting the housing in the engine compartment of the vehicle;
a plug located in the engine compartment and attached to the housing having an accessory end in which a plurality of cords can be attached;
an exit portion of the housing such that the cord directed in a specific direction;
and at least one eyelet which receives the cord from the exit portion and guides the cord through the engine compartment of the vehicle to the opening of the engine compartment so that the cord can be attached to an outlet for activating accessories.
Preferably the reeling means is arranged to pull the cord into the housing.
Preferably the plug has a cord which allows the plug to be mounted in the engine compartment in an appropriate position so that more than one accessory can be attached.
Preferably the exit portion is located on the housing in a downward position so that the cord is extracted in a downward direction from the housing.
Preferably a first eyelet is located below the housing in line with the exit portion to guide the cord, a second eyelet is located at a right angle relative to the first eyelet so that the cord can be guided to the opening defining a grill on the vehicle out of the engine compartment, and the second eyelet is arranged to have an opening smaller than the end of the cord so that the cord does not reel completely into the housing and so that the cord is accessible to an operator.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a schematic view of the present invention.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
A retractable extension cord apparatus 1 has a housing 3 in which a flexible cord 5 is located. The flexible cord has to be pliable in cold weather, such that the cord does not become rigid and stiff in cold weather. The cord is arranged to be attached to a power source 7 for providing power to accessories such as a block heater, a battery blanket, battery charger and interior heater so that a vehicle can be started easily in the winter. The apparatus is mounted on the vehicle in the vehicles engine compartment 11 and has a reeling means 13 for reeling the cord into the housing when not in use. The apparatus is mounted in the engine compartment so that an operator can have a cord for the vehicle without having a clumsy and awkward cord hanging off the side mirror or without having to remove the cord from the vehicle and a apparatus also stops the theft of a loose cord.
The housing has an exit portion 15 which faces downwardly such that the cord exits the housing downwards. The cord is guided by an eyelet 17 located within the engine compartment below the exit portion. The cord then is then guided through a second eyelet 19 which is located at a position out of the engine compartment suitable for the cord to exit the engine compartment. The second eyelet can be mounted at a grill 21 or the like of the vehicle at a generally right angle to the first eyelet. The eyelets have a suitably large opening 23so that the cord can slide through but the opening is suitably small so that the cord end 25 having a plug 27 cannot pass through the eyelet. The second eyelet is arranged to hold the plug out of the engine compartment so that the plug can be accessible by the operator.
The cord is pulled from the second eyelet through the first eyelet out of the housing for attachment to the power source. The cord can then be released from the power source 7 and the reeling means 13 retracts the cord back into the housing and the cord is stopped when the plug engages the second eyelet. The plug is removable so that it can be replaced when damaged or worn and so that the apparatus can be removed from the engine compartment in the summer or warmer months when the engine warming accessories are not needed.
An accessory socket 29 is located within the engine compartment and is attached to the housing with a second cord 31. The cord allows the accessory socket to be mounted within the engine compartment so that the accessories can all access the socket. The accessory socket is mounted by a bracket 33 to the engine compartment and has a plurality of female sockets 35 for receiving the plugs from the accessories.
The housing is mounted to the engine compartment by a mounting bolt 37 which is mounted to the frame of the vehicle. A mounting strap 39 is arranged to tighten the housing to the frame.
The apparatus eliminates the need for an extension cord for your vehicle and allows an owner to plug in three items such as a block heater, battery 5 blanket, a battery charger or the like. The apparatus allows an operator to pull out as much cord as is needed to reach a power source, eliminates tangled cords and the owner never needs to wrap a cord around licence plate or side mirrors.
Also the apparatus secures the cord to the vehicle so that the cord cannot be stolen from the vehicle.
Since various modifications can be made in my invention as herein above described, and many apparently widely different embodiments of same made within the spirit and scope of the claims without department from such spirit and scope, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
