Abstract

A portable fence as used with a portable/folding workbench and a power saw. The fence is designed to be used by clamping the fence into the workbench. The fence has an upturned flange along one edge thereof with an elongated body having an elongated channel along each side. The elongated channel is sized to be clamped within the workbench. The fence provide an extension of the table of the saw and two fences can be clamped within the workbench, one on either side of the saw to extend the table in two directions.

Description

PORTABLE FENCE FOR SAW
This invention relates to a fence for a cutting means and, more particuliarly, to a fence that can be used in conjunction with a power saw and portable/folding workbench and to a method of use thereof.
When using a mitre saw on a portable workbench, difficulty can be encountered in supporting the end of a long workpiece. Currently, an operatot~ will require an assistant to hold up the far end of the workpiece or, alternatively, the operator will stretch into an uncomfortable and perhaps unsafe position to try and support the far end of the workpiece 1o with olue hand (or foot) while operating the saw with the other hand.
Alternatively, the operator might use an independent support such as a chair to support the far end of the workpiece. The difficulty with using fixed olDjects is that the height of the object might not be the same as the height of the saw and the workpiece is not held in a true horizontal 15 position. Also, as the workpiece moves closer to the saw, the chair or other support has to be moved as well. Further, the workpiece does not slide very well relative to the chair or other support and the support or chair might tip over as the workpiece is moved.
Xt is an object of the present invention to provide a portable fence 2o that can be supported by the same portable workbench that supports a saw and is light-weight so that the portable fence will not cause the workbench to tip even though the fence extends well beyond the workbench.
A portable fence for use with a portable/folding workbench and cutting means, said fence comprising an upper surface with an upturned 25 flange Tong one edge thereof, said surface having an underside with an elongated body extending downward therefrom, said elongated body having two sides with an elongated channel extending along each side.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portable fence;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a portable/foldable table with 3o power saw and two portable fences mounted thereon;

Figure 3 is a side view of a.portable workbench and power saw with a portable fence and workpiece mounted thereon; and Figure 4 is a sectional view of a channel portion of the fence.
In Figure 1, a portable fence 2 has an upper surface 4 with an upwardly extending flange 6 extending along one edge thereof. An underside (not shown in Figure 1) of the upper surface 4 has an elongated body 8 extending downward therefrom. Channels 10, 12 extend along a lower edge 14 of the body 8 in a direction parallel to the upper surface 4 on either side 16, 18 respectively of the body 8.
1o In Figure 2, there is shown a perspective view of two fences 2 being mounted at either end of a power saw 20 mounted on a portabl~/foldable workbench 22. The power saw can be a portable type mitre or compound mitre saw or a cut-off saw. While the power saw is preferably mounted on the workbench, hand held power saws could be used advantageously with the fence as well. For example, skill saws or jig saws could be used or non-power hand saws could be used. The channels 10, 12 are identical to one another and are sized so that the fence 2 can be clamped into the workbench 22 with the upper surface 4 aligned with an upper surface 24 of the fence 26 that is part of the saw 20.
2o In Figure 3, one portable fence 2 is clamped into the portable/folding workbench 22 that supports the power saw 20. A
workpi~ce 28 lies on top of the upper surface 4 of the fence 2 and on top of the upper surface 24 of the fence 26 of the saw 20. The body 8 is sized so that the upper surface 4 supports the workpiece 28 at the same level as the fence 24 of the saw 20. The portable workbench can be of the type sold under the name WORKMATE (a trade mark by Black & Decker). Other portabl~/foldable workbenches will also be suitable. Preferably, the fence 2 is made from extruded plastic. It is light-weight and will not cause the workbench to tip even though the fence is cantilevered well past the edge of the workbench. The portable fence 2 has an advantage in that it can be easily and quickly placed in position on the workbench or removed completely therefrom as desired. It camalso be used in conjunction with a second fence or a different type of saw, as desired.
The height of the body 8 determines the height of the upper surface 4. The fence 2 can be manufactured with bodies of different heights to match power saws of different heights. Alternatively, one size of fence can be produced with a height to correspond to the highest commonly used power saw. Uses of other power saws witlx a lesser height can raise the saws on the workbench by, for example, resting the saws on a piece of ~ o plywood. Alternatively, the body 8 could be manufactured in two pieces that can adjustably fit together. For example, each part of the body could have a plurality of holes therein with pins to fit through different sets of holes to adjust the height.
As best shown in Figure 4, the channels 10, 12 are preferably sized ~5 and shaped so that an interior height 30 of each channel is slightly smaller than a thickness of a surface of the workbench into which the fence is clamped. An upper edge 32 of each channel 10, 12 is horizontal and a lower edge 34 of each channel tapers slightly upwards. The tapered lower edge 34 allows the workbench thickness to fit readily into the channel but 2o the fit between the channel and the workbench thickness becomes tighter as the workbench moves further into the channel during clamping.
Numerous variations, within the scope of the attached claims, will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art.

Claims (11)

1. A portable fence for use with a portable/folding workbench and cutting means, said fence comprising an upper surface with an upturned flange at least partially along one edge thereof, said surface having an underside with an elongated body extending downward therefrom, said elongated body having two sides with an elongated channel extending along each side.
2. A fence as claimed in Claim 1 wherein there are two elongated channels and each channel is defined by an upper flange and a lower flange extending outward from said elongated body.
3. A fence as claimed in Claim 2 wherein each channel is sized to be clamped in said workbench.
4. A fence as claimed in Claim 3 wherein said cutting means has a table and said upper surface is supported by said elongated body at a level of said table.
5. A fence as claimed in Claim 4 wherein said upturned flange extends substantially along a length of said one edge.
6. A fence as claimed in Claim 3 wherein each channel has a slight taper toward said main body.
7. A fence as claim in claim 6 wherein said taper is provided by a base that slopes upward and inward along a lower edge of each channel.
8. A fence as claimed in claim 6 wherein said channel is sized to be slightly smaller than a thickness of said workbench that fits into said channel so that a fit between said workbench and said channel becomes tighter the further said workbench thickness moves into said channel.
9. A portable fence as claim in Claim 1 wherein said elongated body is in two separate parts that fit together with adjustment means thereon so that a height of said body can be adjusted to accommodate cutting means having different heights.
10. A method of using a portable fence with a portable/folding workbench and cutting means, said fence having an upper surface with an upturned flange at least partially along one edge thereof, said surface having an underside with an elongated body extending downward therefrom, said elongated body having two sides with an elongated channel extending along each side, said cutting means having a table, said method comprising clamping said channels in said workbench so that said upper surface is at a level of said table on one side of said cutting means, said upper surface providing an extension of said table.
