Description

19-MHI-1999 1?:12 SCHUSTER & PART"JER +49 711 299594 5.02 S
PCT EP97/06454 filed Nov. 17t°' 1997 Translation of Originally Filed Dacurnents Method and Device for the Identification and Recognition of diving Beings andlor Objects The invention concerns a method and a device for the identification and recognition of living beings andlbr objects in accordance with the precharacterixing part of claim 1 and the precharacterizing part of claim 31) Methods and apparatus of this type are in wide spread uge for situations e.g. in which the identity of a person must be determined e.g. to authorize access or entrance. Exarnplea thereof are banking machines, computer work lQCations, entrance to companies, security areas or lockers. ~ethads and devices are known in the art with which identification papers, chip cards, with or without personal identification numbers ;PIN), or passwords are used. These cOnventionaX
methods and devices have the disadvantage that a special medium rn~st always be aazried along with the person for his identification. In the event that this medium is forgotten, access or entrance is not possible. In the event that the medium i5 taken by a non-authorized person, this individual can gain access or entrance. The conventional methods are therefore difficult for the usex and are not reliable with respect to their operation.
Additional methods and devices are known in the are (US ~ 06~
162) with which the identification of a person is based on fingerprinting techniques. An image is taken of the skin Lines of the finger of a person to be identified and etored.
An additional image is prepared for recognition of the 19-MRI-1999 17~1 SCHUSTER & PRRTNER +49 711 X99594 S.03
2 oorresponding person and is directly compared to the first stored image. In the event that the images agree, the person is identified. This procedure has the disadvantage that the direct comparison between the two images required by the examination procedures zs relatively burdensome. As a result, the comparison takes some time and requires a large amount of memory ir. the computer carrying out the method. In addition, the recognition or identification of a person is not auccesstul ii the skin lines have changed, e.g. due to an injury.
In Gontxast thCreto, the method in accordance with the invention having the characterizing features of claim 1 and the device in accordance with the invention with the characterizing features of claim 31 have the advantage that a reference image is first created in which a predetermined section at the rising being to be identified or of the object to be identified is recorded by an image recording apparatus.
Gharacteristic features and their positions are subsequently extracted from this reference image and stored as a reference data sec in a storage unit. In order to identify ar recognize the living being or the object, an identification image is recorded of the predetermined section with the assistance of do image recording device. The identification image is subsequently examined for the presence of the features and positrons of the reference data set. In the event that these features are only present at the predetermined positions in the identification image, the corresponding person or object is considered to be identified. If however the features are not present ar are located in athcr positions, the living being or object is considered unidentified, Depending on the application, the number of features stored in the reference status set can differ. fit. depends upon the complexity of the recorded structures of the living being or object to be 19-MHI-1999 17~13 SCHUSTER & PaRTtJER +~9 711 299594 x.04
3 identified, on the desired precision of the identification, and on the features of the image recording apparatus. The method in accordance with the invention and the device in accordance with the invention operate rapidly and reliably, since the amount of data tv be stored is small and there is no direct comparison between the reference image and the identification imager rather only the data in the reference data sst dre sought in the identification image. The identification procedure is therefore rapid and does not require increased memory or storage capacity. Portions of the corresponding living being which are suitable for identification or of the corresponding object are e.g.
portions of the surface of the object or special akin portions of the living being. In the case of a human being, this can e.g. be the finger ax the face, since these are rarely covered by clothing and therefore are always available for inspection purposes.
In accordance with an advantageous configuration of the method in accordance with the inventive, the relative positions of the features are determined and stored in the reference status set. The origin of the associated reference system can thereby e.q. be loaatad in the position of one of the features. This sirnplifics location of the features in the identification image.
In accordance with an additional advantageous configuration of the method in accordance with the invention, patterns Qr regularities present in the section are utilired for identificdtion of the living being or of the object. In this manner, living beings even having small injuries or deformations in portions of their bodies or objects having a small degree of damage can be identified and recognized.
