Abstract

A level gauge for a liquid storage tank has a float that rises and falls as changes occur in a level of liquid within the interior of the storage tank. A magnetic counterweight is disposed within a vertical portion of a tubular sealed housing.
The magnetic counterweight is connected by a cable to the float. A vertically aligned guide track is provided in parallel spaced relation to the vertical portion of the tubular sealed housing. A free floating magnetic indicator member is positioned within the guide track. The magnetic indicator member is of the same magnetic polarity as the magnetic counterweight. The indicator member is magnetically repulsed by the magnetic counterweight and thereby maintains a constant positional relationship relative to the magnetic counterweight.

The present invention relates to a level gauge for a liquid storage tank and, in particular, a storage tank that contains a liquid that gives off toxic vapours.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
A common form of level gauge used in liquid storage tanks uses a float that rises and falls with the level of liquid within the storage tank. The float is connected by a cable to an indicator member on a level gauge. The cable maintains a constant relationship between the float and the level indicator. As the float rises, the indicator member falls.
As the float falls, the indicator member rises. The level gauge has a scale that converts the position of the indicator member into a value for the quantity of liquid within the storage tank. There is a problem when this type of level gauge is used with 1 iquids that give of f toxic vapours . When the level gauge is properly sealed to prevent the escape to atmosphere of such vapours, the vapours tend to fog the viewing window and obscure the view of the indicator member.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
What is required is a level gauge for a liquid storage tank that is better suited for use with a liquid that gives off toxic vapours.
According to the present invention there is provided a level gauge for a liquid storage tank. The level gauge is in the form of a combination that includes a storage tank having an interior and an exterior. A float is provided that rises and falls as changes occur in a level of liquid within the interior of the storage tank. A tubular sealed housing communicates with the interior and extends to the exterior of the storage tank. The tubular sealed housing has a vertical portion spaced from the float by a bridging portion. A
magnetic counterweight is disposed within the vertical portion of the tubular sealed housing. The magnetic counterweight is connected by a cable to the float. The cable maintains a constant relationship between the float and the magnetic counterweight. As the float rises, the magnetic counterweight falls. As the float falls, the magnetic counterweight rises.
A display board is provided having a vertically aligned guide track with an upper end and a lower end. The guide track is in parallel spaced relation to the vertical portion of the tubular sealed housing. A free floating magnetic indicator member is positioned within the guide track. The magnetic indicator member is of the same magnetic polarity as the magnetic counterweight. The indicator member tends to fall toward the lower end of the guide track by force of gravity.
However, the indicator member is magnetically repulsed by the magnetic counterweight and thereby maintains a constant positional relationship relative to the magnetic counterweight.
Although beneficial results may be obtained through the use of the level gauge, as described above, in view of the danger posed by sour gas, it is preferred that sealing means be provided to prevent the migration of gases along the tubular housing, as will hereinafter be further described.
Although beneficial results may be obtained through the use of the tank gauge, as described, there is a problem with tanks overflowing. In order to address that problem workers have had to place themselves at risk, by climbing up onto the tank to monitor the filling process. Even more beneficial results may, therefore, be obtained when a magnetically activated flow control switch is positioned adjacent to tubular housing and electronically coupled with a valve controlling fluid flow through the inlet of the tank. The switch is magnetically activated by the magnetic counterweight and causes the valve to shut off the fluid flow into the tank.

FIGURE 3 is a side elevation view, in section, of an actuator switch for the level indicator illustrated in FIGURE

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
The preferred embodiment, a level gauge generally identified by reference numeral 10, will now be described with reference to FIGURE 1 through 3.
Referring to FIGURE l, level gauge for a liquid storage tank 10 is in the form of a combination that includes a storage tank 12 having an interior 14 and an exterior 16. A float 18 is provided that rises and falls as changes occur in a level 20 of liquid 22 within interior 14 of storage tank 12 resulting from flow into storage tank 12 through inlet tube 51 or flow out of storage tank 12 through outlet tube 53.
A tubular sealed housing 24 communicates with interior 14 and extends to exterior 16 of storage tank 12. Tubular sealed housing 24 has a vertical portion 26 spaced from float 18 by a bridging portion 28. A magnetic counterweight 30 is disposed within vertical portion 26 of tubular sealed housing 24.
Magnetic counterweight 30 is connected by a cable 32 to float 18. Cable 32 maintains a constant relationship between float 18 and magnetic counterweight 30. As float 18 rises, magnetic counterweight 30 falls. As float 18 falls, magnetic counterweight 30 rises.
A display board 34 is provided having a vertically aligned guide track 36 with an upper end 38 and a lower end 40, and a vertically aligned scale 42. Guide track 36 is in parallel spaced relation to vertical portion 26 of tubular sealed housing 24. A free floating magnetic indicator member 44 is positioned within guide track 36. Magnetic indicator member 44 is of the same magnetic polarity as the magnetic counterweight 30. Magnetic indicator member 44 tends to fall toward lower end 40 of guide track 36 by force of gravity.
However, magnetic indicator member 44 is magnetically repulsed by magnetic counterweight 30 and thereby maintains a constant positional relationship relative to said magnetic counterweight 30. The level of fluid in tank 12 is indicated by the position of markings 46 on magnetic indicator member 44 relative to scale 42. An actuator switch 48 is positioned adjacent vertical portion 26 of tubular sealed housing 24 toward lower end 40 of guide track 36.
Referring to FIGURE 3, actuator switch 48 includes a weather proof housing 74, within which is contained an activator 76. A toggle spring 78 extends from activator 76.
A magnetic member 80 is at a remote end 82 of toggle spring 78.
As level 20 of liquid 22 rises until storage tank 12 is almost full, as illustrated in FIGURE l, magnetic counterweight 30 approaches activator switch 48. When storage tank 12 is filled to a selected maximum level, magnetic counterweight 30 is in a closely spaced relationship with magnetic member 80, as illustrated in FIGURE 3. Magnetic counterweight 30 exerts a magnetic force upon magnetic member 80. Toggle spring 78 is compressed, thereby transmitting the force to activator 76.
When activator 76 experiences the force from toggle spring 78 an electronic signal is transmitted by electrically conducting wires 84 to a solenoid valve 55 on inlet tube 51. Valve 55 closes preventing additional liquid from being supplied to and overfilling storage tank 12.
A cable guide seal, generally indicated by reference 5 numeral 50 is provided to prevent the migration of gases along tubular housing 24. Referring to FIGURE 2, cable guide seal 50 includes a first sealing assembly 52 and a second sealing assembly 54 positioned in spaced relation within tubular housing 24 to form a sealing chamber 56 therebetween. Sealing chamber is filled with a viscose sealing grease 58. Each of first sealing assembly 52 and second sealing assembly 54 includes a pliable end membrane 60 having a central cable passage 62, a wiper 64 having a serrated wiper passage 66, whereby sealing grease 58 is wiped from cable 32 prior to passage through central cable passage 62, and two grease retaining baffles 68 positioned in transverse relation in sealing chamber 56. Baffles 68 are axially offset leaving a space 70 therebetween through which cable 32 is threaded. From time to time it is necessary to supply additional grease 58 to sealing chamber 56. A spring mounted greasing port 71 is provided by means of which grease 58 is supplied to sealing chamber 56.
It will be apparent to one skilled in the art that modifications may be made to the illustrated embodiment without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined in the Claims.

Claims (7)

1. A level gauge for a liquid storage tank, comprising in combination:
a storage tank having an interior and an exterior;
a float rising and falling as changes occur in a level of liquid within the interior of the storage tank;
a tubular sealed housing communicating with the interior and extending to the exterior of the storage tank, the tubular sealed housing having a vertical portion spaced from the float by a bridging portion;
a magnetic counterweight disposed within the vertical portion of the tubular sealed housing, the magnetic counterweight being connected by a cable to the float, the cable maintaining a constant relationship between the float and the magnetic counterweight such that as the float rises, the magnetic counterweight falls and as the float falls, the magnetic counterweight rises;
a display board having a vertically aligned guide track having an upper end and a lower end, the guide track being in parallel spaced relation to the vertical portion of the tubular sealed housing;
a free floating magnetic indicator member positioned within the guide track, the magnetic indicator member being of the same magnetic polarity as the magnetic counterweight, the indicator member tending to fall toward the lower end of the guide track by force of gravity, however, the indicator member being magnetically repulsed by the magnetic counterweight and thereby maintaining a constant positional relationship relative to the magnetic counterweight.
2. The level gauge as defined in Claim 1, wherein sealing means are provided to prevent the migration of gases along the tubular housing.
3. The level gauge as defined in Claim 2, wherein the sealing means includes:
a first sealing assembly and a second sealing assembly positioned in spaced relation within the tubular housing to form a sealing chamber therebetween, the sealing chamber being filled with a viscose liquid.
4. The level gauge as defined in Claim 3, wherein each of the first sealing assembly and the second sealing assembly includes:
a pliable end membrane having a central cable passage;
a wiper, whereby the viscose liquid is wiped from the cable prior to passage through the central cable passage; and at least two grease retaining baffles positioned in transverse relation in the sealing chamber, the baffles being axially offset leaving a space therebetween through which the cable is threaded.
5. The level gauge as defined in Claim 1, wherein sealing means are provided to prevent the migration of gases along the tubular housing, the sealing means including:
a first sealing assembly and a second sealing assembly positioned in spaced relation within the tubular housing to form a sealing chamber therebetween, the sealing chamber being filled with a viscose sealing grease;
each of the first sealing assembly and the second sealing assembly including:
a pliable end membrane having a central cable passage;
a wiper having a serrated wiper passage, whereby the sealing grease is wiped from the cable prior to passage through the central cable passage; and two grease retaining baffles positioned in transverse relation in the sealing chamber, the baffles being axially offset leaving a space therebetween through which the cable is threaded.
6. The level gauge as defined in Claim 1, wherein a magnetically activated control switch is position adjacent to tubular housing, the switch being magnetically activated by the magnetic counterweight.
7. A level gauge for a liquid storage tank, comprising in combination:
a storage tank having an interior, an exterior, an inlet and an outlet;
a float rising and falling as changes occur in a level of liquid within the interior of the storage tank;
a tubular sealed housing communicating with the interior and extending to the exterior of the storage tank, the tubular sealed housing having a vertical portion spaced from the float by a bridging portion;
a magnetic counterweight disposed within the vertical portion of the tubular sealed housing, the magnetic counterweight being connected by a cable to the float, the cable maintaining a constant relationship between the float and the magnetic counterweight such that as the float rises, the magnetic counterweight falls and as the float falls, the magnetic counterweight rises;
a display board having a vertically aligned guide track having an upper end and a lower end, the guide track being in parallel spaced relation to the vertical portion of the tubular sealed housing;
a free floating magnetic indicator member positioned within the guide track, the magnetic indicator member being of the same magnetic polarity as the magnetic counterweight, the indicator member tending to fall toward the lower end of the guide track by force of gravity, however, the indicator member being magnetically repulsed by the magnetic counterweight and thereby maintaining a constant positional relationship relative to the magnetic counterweight;
sealing means to prevent the migration of gases along the tubular housing, the sealing means including:
a first sealing assembly and a second sealing assembly positioned in spaced relation within the tubular housing to form a sealing chamber therebetween, the sealing chamber being filled with a viscose sealing grease;
each of the first sealing assembly and the second sealing assembly including:
a pliable end membrane having a central cable passage;
a wiper having a serrated wiper passage, whereby the sealing grease is wiped from the cable prior to passage through the central cable passage; and two grease retaining baffles positioned in transverse relation in the sealing chamber, the baffles being axially offset leaving a space therebetween through which the cable is threaded; and a magnetically activated flow control switch positioned adjacent to tubular housing and electronically coupled with a valve controlling fluid flow through the inlet of the tank, the switch being magnetically activated by the magnetic counterweight.
