The top and bottom rings are made with a malleable steel and are enclosed in folds made in the netting material of the sleeve or inside hems made of vinyl-based fabric material sewn to the netting material of the sleeve. In use, the garbage hat is placed over one or more garbage bags to enclose the bags completely, to keep the birds and animals away from the bags. One or more bells are attached to the netting sleeve. The bells are advantageous for scaring or frustrating and discouraging persistent birds and animals trying to penetrate the garbage hat.

Description

TITLE: COLLAPSIBLE CURBSIDE GARBAGE HAT
Note to the attention of the Commissioner of Patents: This application is incomplete. This application is filed under the provisions of the Patent Rule # 93. The sections relating to the Field of Invention;
Background of the Invention; Summary of the Invention; Description of the Drawings; Abstract of the Disclosure; and a number of additional claims will be added at a later date. The enclosed draft sketches will also be replaced by CAD drawings at that time.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
While this invention is susceptible of embodiments in many different forms, there is shown in the drawings and will be described in details herein a specific embodiment, with the understanding that the present disclosure is to be considered as an example ofthe principles ofthe invention and is not intended to limit the invention to the embodiment illustrated.
Reference will firstly be made to FIGS. 1 and 2 illustrating a collapsible curbside garbage hat according to the preferred embodiment of the present invention. The collapsible curbside garbage hat is shown therein in a deployed mode and in a collapsed mode respectively.
However, before describing this invention in detail, it is deemed that certain general information should be reminded in order to afford a clearer understanding of the functions of this invention and of the diagrams presented herein.

Domestic garbages are commonly packaged in plastic bags and left along the street on garbage pickup day, to be collected by a garbage collection crew. Although the collection crew normally follows a fixed schedule, the garbage bags can stay out along a street for extended periods of time. It is also common to leave garbage bags outside overnight, especially in areas where the garbage collection is effected early in the morning.
When garbage bags are left outside for any extended periods of time, they become prey to crows, seagulls, dogs, cats, skunks, racoons and other rapacious animals, who are quick to puncture and rip the bags and scatter their contents to access food residues.
Although, some people prefer to keep their garbage bags enclosed in curbside boxes and barrel-like dollies, the collapsible curbside garbage hat according to the preferred embodiment offers a convenient alternative to the conventional containers, and an efficient method to preserve garbage bags against animal damage.
The collapsible curbside garbage hat according to the preferred embodiment, hereinafter referred to as the garbage hat 20, comprises a top ring 22, a bottom ring 24 and a sleeve 26 made of netting material. The sleeve 26 joins the top and bottom rings and extends over and encloses the top ring 22. The top and bottom rings 22,24 are preferably made with a malleable steel or similar rod-like formable stiff material enclosed in folds made in the netting material of the sleeve 26 or inside hems 28 made of vinyl-based fabric material sewn to the netting material of the sleeve 26.
The netting material of the sleeve 26 is preferably of the plastic-based type of netting material having a mesh size of between about 0.125 inch to about 0.50 inch, and a strand size of about 12 to 25 AWG.
The cover portion 30 of the netting sleeve extending over and enclosing the top ring 22 is preferably pulled tight across the top ring 22 and into a central tuft 32 at the centre of the ring 22, and tied with a plastic tie member 34. As can be appreciated, the netting cover 30 enclosing the top ring 22 may also be made of a single circular piece of material sewn to the hem 28 circling the top ring 22.
In use, the garbage hat 20 is placed over one or more garbage bags 36 to enclose the bags completely. Because the netting cover 30 enclosing the top ring 22 is tightly stretched, the top ring 22 tends to remain over the top of the bags 36 to define with the sleeve portion 26 and the bottom ring 24, a cylindrical enclosure over the bags 36, to keep the birds and animals away from the bags.
The rod-like element inside the bottom ring 24 is preferably a metal rod having a diameter of about 3/8 inch. This size and type of rod have been found to have an appropriate weight for keeping the bottom ring against the ground in windy conditions.
It may also be appreciated that although the garbage hat 20 can also be made with flexible fabric material other than a net-like material, the plastic-based netting material as taught herein is a preferred material of fabrication to allow an air circulation there through when the garbage hat is used under direct sunlight for example. This latter material is also preferred for its light weight, its relatively low cost, for its durability, and for being easily washable with a garden hose. Furthermore, the plastic construction of the garbage hat 20 makes it particularly advantageous for its resistance to all kinds of weather conditions.
The garbage hat 20 according to the preferred embodiment preferably has one or more bells 38 attached to the netting sleeve 26. The bells 38 have been found to be advantageous for scaring or frustrating and discouraging persistent birds and animals trying to penetrate the garbage hat 20. For a best result, these bells 38 are preferably attached to the loose portion of the netting material at an intermediate region between the top and bottom rings 22,24.
Because the top ring 22 tends to remain on the top portions of the garbage bags 36, it is easily grabbed by a garbage collection worker for pulling the hat off the garbage bags and for placing the garbage hat 20 aside in a collapsed form such as illustrated in FIG. 2. In that respect, the garbage hat 20 according to the preferred embodiment is preferably initially used with a chain 40 pegged to the ground. The chain 40 is useful to indicate to an unaware garbage collection crew that the garbage hat 20 is not part of the garbage to be picked up and must remain on the property.
After a few initial uses of a new garbage hat 20, the chain 40 may be removed or simply not used.
Another important feature of the garbage hat 20 according to the preferred embodiment, is that an address label 42 is preferably sewn thereto. The address label 42 is preferably a blank label on which the property owner can write or affix the street address of his/her property.
The label is another indication to point out to a garbage collection crew that the garbage hat should remain on the property. The address label is also useful for sorting out the garbage hats of neighbours using a same garbage pickup point.
The garbage hat 20 in its collapsed form, as illustrated in FIG. 2, is easily manipulated and stored away between uses in a garage or a basement. The garbage hat 20 in its collapsed form, is stowable by laying it flat under a work bench, by hanging it sideways on a hook or by laying it sideways against a wall, for examples.
Referring now to FIGS. 3 and 4, the garbage hat 20 is preferably manufactured in three sizes to satisfy the requirements of most residential applications. The first, second and third preferred models have diameters 'D' of 30 inches, 36 inches and 40 inches respectively. All three models preferably have a common sleeve length, or hat height 'H' of about 30 inches. The smaller model fits over two standard-size garbage bags and the larger model can accommodate about 4-5 bags.
As previously mentioned, each of the top and bottom rings 22,24, contains a metal rod 44 that is bent and that has its ends joined with a plastic sleeve 46, as illustrated in FIG. 5. The metal rod is preferably about 3/8 inch in diameter, as mentioned before, and the joining sleeve 46 is preferably made with a piece of plastic tubing having an inside diameter of 3/8 inch, and a length of about two inches. The metal rod 44 is thereby replaceable when damaged for example.
As also previously mentioned, each metal rod 44, is preferably made of a stiff malleable metal such that a user of a garbage hat 20 according to the preferred embodiment can change the form of the hat to satisfy personal preferences or a preferred placement of garbage bags. For example, a circular garbage hat 20 is deformable into a circular-oblong shape 48 to cover several garbage bags set in a single line. The malleable material of the rings is also advantageous for repairing a garbage hat 20 that has been accidentally bent out of shape for example.
It will also be appreciated that the top and bottom rings 22,24, can differ in diameters and shapes from those shown or from one-another, to accommodate various situations and user preferences.
Still another feature of the garbage hat 20 according to the preferred embodiment is that it is susceptible of a low cost of manufacture with regard to both materials and labour, and which accordingly is then susceptible of low prices of sale to the consumer, thereby making such garbage hat economically available to the public.
As to further manners of usage and manufacturing of the instant invention, the same should be apparent from the above description, and accordingly no further discussion relative to these aspects is provided.
