Abstract

There is provided a unique accessory device for enabling the immediate retrieval of a pallet from its destination point by means of providing sufficient space between the load, more particularly, rolled or stabbed sod, comprising: a plane horizontal sheet, above which, a plurality of upwardly and reversibly beveled ribs attached thereon form the raised portion of said accessory device. The ribs allow unobstructed access for typical mufti-bar lift-truck forks below the load of sod, enabling the said sod to be raised vertically from the pallet assembly thus providing immediate retrieval of pallet assembly.

Description

TITLE OF THE INVENTION
PALLET-LESS SKID
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a device for loading and unloading sod, more particularly, unloading of sod from a pallet. This has been a time consuming task for sod farmers who deliver sod to a plurality of end-users on a frequent basis. The plane, horizontal platforms, on which sod is transported, such as wooden or plastic pallets, are either left at the end-user site or picked up at the farmer's expense. An invention that would eliminate the need to leave pallets at the end-user's site or to have the pallets picked up by the farmer, by allowing the insertion of 1o typical mufti-bar sod forks between the sod and the pallet thus enabling for immediate retrieval of said pallet, would prove to be an effective cost and time saving addition to the art.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
It is desirable to have the ability to immediately retrieve sod pallets at time of delivery from sod farms to avoid the cost and time necessary to regain possession of said pallets.
Conventional pallets, either wooden or plastic, typically comprise: three lower supporting members as the contact portion to the resting surface namely a floor or the ground to form the structural quality of a pallet, and a plurality of separate upper members fixedly and perpendicularly attached above the said supporting members. This assembly forms a plane, horizontal, structurally stable surface on which materials may be placed and transported upon.
Consequently, removal of sod from pallet remains a manual task not allowing for immediate access and return of the above-mentioned pallet assembly at point of delivery.
It is known in the field of sod farming to utilize a mufti-bar fork assembly similar to that depicted in U. S. Patent No. 5,538,387 issued July 23, 1996 to Durivage et al.
An accessory device, which would provide access between the sod and the pallet, allowing the removal of said sod from the pallet thus enabling the retrieval of said pallet, is highly desirable.
Pallets are, of course, well know in prior art, to facilitate the storing, handling and transporting of materials including more particularly rolled or dabbed sod, but fail to enable the 1o insertion of mufti-bar sod forks between the sod and the pallet.
The pallets include, but are not limited to sod. The accessory device includes, but is not limited to sod.
The applicant is aware of several attempts in prior art to produce pallets, which are utilized as a means of handling and transporting materials. For example, reference may be had to U.S. Patent 3,294,041 of A. Lessheim, issued December 27, 1966, which describes a two part pallet comprising of a disposable upper portion fabricated of light inexpensive wood members which can be left at the destination point, and a lower more valuable and sturdy portion used to raise the said upper portion to enable access below the upper portion with typical 2-bar lift truck forks. This said lower portion is utilized at the point of departure and remains at that location. However, this device fails to meet the needs of sod farmers.
Specifically, the device fails to provide adequate horizontal surface on which the said sod may rest.
Moreover, such a device is constructed of few thin wood framing members which could not withstand the immense weight produced by the sod. Thus it is desirable to place sod on a sturdy surface which could withstand the weight applied by the sod. It is also desirable to maintain possession of all pallets and the like at the point of destination. Although fairly inexpensive, the above mentioned device still requires the production of this upper section thus creating an expense for the sod farmer.
Another example in prior art may be found in U.S. Patent 4,051,787 to Kiyoshi Nishitani, issued October 4, 1977, which discloses an anti-slip thermoplastic resin pallet wherein the said pallet is formed in such a manner as to comprise of two integrally mating sections which, when together, form a study, longer wear pallet. Unfortunately, this pallet fails to allow the insertion of typical multi-bar sod forks, thus rendering this invention as unable to meet the need to maintain possession of same without the expense and time required to do so.
Lastly, another example may be found in U.S. Patent 5,704,300 to William J, 1o Rushton, issued January 6, 1998, which depicts a standard pallet but accompanied with the benefit of long wear from its plastic construction. However, once more, fails to provide access between the sod and the pallet.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is thus an object of the present invention to provide an accessory device combining a material handling function with means to allow insertion of mufti-bar lift truck forks between the sod and the pallet thus enabling the load of sod or the like to be lifted vertically from the horizontal pallet.
In one aspect of the invention, there is provided a material resting means comprising a plane, horizontal sheet of sufficient thickness to allow for repeated friction from lift 2o truck mufti-bar forks, and a plurality of upwardly and inwardly beveled reversed ribs fabricated in such a way that the lower sheet portion and the upper rib portion are as one entity.
This first accessory device would therefore be fixedly and securely attached to any standard wooden or plastic pallet assembly thus enabling access to the above-mentioned mufti-bar forks between ribs of said accessory device and material, more particularly, rolled sod which rests on the ribs and within the valleys between the beveled sides, and also allowing access for standard two-bar forks to be inserted below the said first accessory device and upper supporting members of a standard pallet and between the lower members of same.
In another aspect of the invention, the first accessory device may form an integral portion of a pallet.
In another aspect of the invention, the first accessory device may be releasably attached to a pallet.
In another aspect of the invention, the first accessory device may include voids in to the lower, plane, sheet portion of the said accessory device to reduce its total weight.
In another aspect of the invention, the pallet may be fabricated of wood, thermoplastic resin, processed wood fiber or the like.
In another aspect of the invention, the first accessory device may include a second accessory device comprising of tapered inserts utiliaed for filling the space between one or more of the valleys formed by the raised beveled upper portions of the said accessory device, allowing for the placement of dabbed sod thus enabling this form of loading to benefit equally from the first accessory device.
In another aspect of the invention, the first and/or second accessory devices may be fabricated of wood, thermoplastic resin, processed wood fiber or the like.
2o The accessory device of the present invention provides means to enable mufti-bar lift truck forks to be inserted below not only sod but to a plurality of materials while maintaining all the advantages of the inventions denoted in prior art and overcoming many of the disadvantages.

Accordingly, the invention provides a device which enables the removal of material, more particularly rolled or dabbed sod to be wholly removed from a pallet thus allowing immediate access and retrieval of said pallet for return to its departing location.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
In the following description, similar features in the drawings have been given similar reference numerals.
With reference now to the drawings and in particular to Figure 1 which illustrates a perspective view of the first accessory device 2 of the present invention.
The first accessory device 2 comprises a lower portion 8 and an upper portion 14. The lower portion 8 resembles a plane horizontal sheet, above which the upper portion 14 is located. The upper portion 14 comprises a plurality of upwardly and inwardly reversed beveled ribs 12 securedly attached to the lower sheet portion 8 to form the raised portion 14 of said first accessory device 2.
1o With specific reference to Figure 4, an embodiment of the first accessory device 2, and second accessory device 9, in particular, the ribs 12 of first accessory device 2, when viewed singularly from the end comprise, one vertical side 13 and one downwardly and outwardly sloped side 10 adjacent to that of the vertical side 13, connected by a horizontal top 15. The vertical sides 13 of the ribs 12 are spaced in such a way to allow more than the width of a single bar of the multi-bar fork assembly 4 as best illustrated in front view of Figure 2. The ribs 12 are equal in length to the lower sheet portion 8.
With specific reference to Figure 2, which illustrates a front view of the first accessory device 2 is shown as would be installed on a conventional pallet assembly, more particularly, the arrangement of the ribs 12 as fixedly attached to the lower sheet portion 8. The 2o ribs 12 are placed in such a way that the sloped sides 10 are adjacent to sloped sides 10 and that the vertical sides 13 are adjacent to vertical sides 13 as well, wherein the space 3 between the sloped sides 10 form a concave shape resembling a valley with a greater dimension at its upper opened end than that of its lower closed end.
With specific reference to Figure 3, a perspective view of an embodiment of the first accessory device 2 is shown as would be installed on a conventional pallet 18. A
conventional pallet 18 typically comprises three lower supporting members 21 as the contacting portion to the resting surface namely a floor or the ground, and a plurality of separate upper members 22 fixedly and perpendicularly attached to the lower supporting members 21 thus forming a plane, horizontal, structurally stable surface on which materials may be placed and transported upon.
With specific reference to Figure 5, a perspective view of an embodiment of the second accessory device 9, comprising: a material resting surface 26 having a length greater that 1o its width, a bottom 24 of equal length to that of the upper material resting portion 26 but lesser width than that of the upper material resting portion 26, thus forming upwardly and outwardly sloped sides 27 and 28 of equal length to that of the top and bottom surfaces 26 and 24. The second accessory device 9 is provided with at least two cylindrical holes 25 symmetrically and centeredly located from the top portion 26 through and to the bottom portion 24.
With specific reference to Figure 4, a sectioned end view of an embodiment of the first accessory device 2 illustrated with one-second accessory device 9 installed within a valley 3 of the first accessory device 2. The first accessory device 2 alone is utilized principally for placing rolled sod in and within the length of its valleys 3. Consequently, a plurality of layered rows of sod may be perpendicularly placed on top of previous rows thus interlocking the rows of 2o sod so as to gravitationally and frictionally provide a stable load. The installation of second accessory devices 9 in and within the valleys 3 provides means for placing Blabbed or unrolled sod on the first accessory device while maintaining access between the vertical sided 13 of the ribs 12 thus allowing for the insertion of said mufti-bar forks. The second accessory device 9 may be releasably attached to the first accessory device 2 by means of metal screws 11 or the like through and from the top 26 to the bottom 24 of the second accessory device 9 and frictionally into holes of the lower portion 8 of the first accessory device 2 so as to securedly and releasably attach second accessory device 9 to and with first accessory device 2.
With specific reference to Figure 6, a front view of a load of rolled sod 30 placed s on the first accessory device 2 which is installed on a conventional pallet 18 wherein, the pallet 18, forms the structural support to which the first accessory device 2 is attached thereto. The first accessory device 2 allows for the rolled sod 30 to gravitationally rest on and within the downwardly and inwardly sloped adjacent sides 10 of the ribs 12 thus enabling the rolled sod 30 to naturally conform to the valleys 3 of the first accessory device 2 whilst allowing for the to insertion of mufti-bar lift truck forks 4 in the channel 5 formed between the vertically adjacent sides 13 of the ribs 12.
With specific reference to Figure 7, a front view of a load of rolled sod 30 lifted vertically from the first accessory device 2 and pallet assembly 18 with mufti-bar lift truck forks 4.
15 The above-mentioned forks 4, when inserted in the channels 5 between the vertically and upwardly protruding sides 13 of the first accessory device 2, access the bottom of the load 30, allowing the rolled sod 30, which, each roll has a generally greater width than that of the space between the said forks 4. The load 30 would then be relocated to its final resting point thus enabling immediate retrieval of pallet assembly 18 and first and/or second accessory devices 2 2o and/or 9.
