Description

TEM File No.
TITLE: BEVERAGE CADDY
The present invention relates to cup holders generally, and in particular relates to self leveling and easily removable beverage container holders for use on golf pull carts, strollers, and other mobile applications.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
All experienced golfers know the benefits of having a cold drink half way through a round of golf as a way to relax and to fight dryness, heat and fatigue. In a game where unnecessary stoppages are frowned upon, players often bring drinks in resealable containers that they can stow back into a golf bag pocket without fear of spilling while they continue play and wait for the next opportunity to take out again the beverage container and have another sip. Two preferred beverages, soft drinks and beer, which generally come in non resealable cans have to either be consumed completely and quickly once opened or be kept in a vibration controlled environment during transport around the golf course. For the minority of players who indulge in the renting of power carts or else in the hiring of caddies, this is really not a problem. But for the majority of golf enthusiasts who prefer to use pull carts, a self leveling easy-to-use drink holder such as the present invention discloses is the answer.

While a relatively large variety of drink holders already seem to exist for applications mostly in motor vehicles, few of them include means of maintaining a beverage container in a generally upright position regardless of the angle of its attachment member, and none of them combine the means of simple size adjustability along with ease of removability via a slide-on adjustable clamp. Megal (US patent # 5,484,129) teaches a golf specific free swinging apparatus that requires a drill to install a.nd which seems to sit uncomfortably low on the golf cart frame. Staschiak (US patent # 5,587,968) teaches a device that sits at a more comfortable level but which also requires a drill and complex clamps to install and which does not apply any grasping force to containers the possible diameters of which would appear to then be rather limited. Harm (US patent #
4,844,399) and O'Malley (US patent # 5,433,361) teach rather large and cumbersome devices that would not be pleasant to install nor to store.
What is desired therefore is a novel apparatus which overcomes the limitations and problems of prior art drink holders. Preferably, it should be self leveling, inexpensive and easy to install and remove. It should adapt to all types and sizes of golf pull cart handles. It should also be reliable, robust and compatible with most popular small portion drink containers. It should be light, easy to carry, and also attractive to look at.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

P FFERRRD EMBODIMENT
Reference is first made to Fig. 1 which shows a preferred embodiment of the beverage caddy (indicated generally by reference numeral 10) having a main body 11, a ring clip 21, and an adjustable clamp 30 having a mounting bracket 31, an end bracket 41, and bolts 47. The adjustable clamp is attached to the main body of the beverage caddy at mounting pin 18 (see additional details below) from which point it is free to pivot freely in the axis of rotation shown.
The main body 11, as can be seen in Figs. 2-4, is generally L shaped with a back plate 12 to support the overall structure of the device and a base 13 to support the base of the beverage container to be loaded into the device. The base has a lip 14 which basically surrounds bottom plate 15. The base is at an angle slightly less than ninety degrees to the back plate in order to facilitate drainage of fluids that may get inside the base. The base's bottom plate has a drainage opening 19 which in this case is generally T
shaped with material removed from both the bottom and the back plates. This opening allows-for spillage, condensation or washing fluids to drain oil thereby making it easier to keep the device clean. The Iip around the base adds strength to the device and helps retain the beverage container within the device.
The back plate has ring clip slots 16 (see Fig. 2) through which the ring clip (see Fig. 5) is inserted to rest as shown in Fig. 1. These slots are of dimensions that allow for substantially easy insertion and removal of the ring clip while ensuring its safe retention during use. Removal and replacement of the clip ring is done by pinching its two arms 22 together while sliding its clip ends 23 in or out of the slots. The ring clip basically clasps the beverage container, releasably retaining it within the device. The arms are substantially resilient and readily adapt or open to the various diameters of most beverage containers in the 8 to 18 ounces (250 to 650 milliliters) range. The ring clip is distanced from the base in order to facilitate finger reach, optimize strength, and adapt to various drink heights.
The main body also has a swivel pin 18 (see Figs. 3 & 4) about which the device swivels as guided by gravity and other forces generated by movement of the cart or otherwise. The swivel pin is moulded into and is part of the main body. It consists generally of two separate fingers 18F extending from the back plate which squeeze together during insertion into the mating pin hole 35 of the mounting bracket 31 (see details below). The small release openings 18R of the back plate around the swivel pin provide added Ilexibility for the swivel pin fingers to be able to temporarily come together while being inserted into the mounting bracket pin hole. Finally, the main body has a logo recess 17 into which a logo, brand or other advertising information may be moulded or applied.
Reference is now made to Figs. 6 to 9 which show the adjustable clamp 30, its mounting bracket 31, its end bracket 41, and its bolts 47. The mounting bracket has a vertical member 32 through which pin hole 35 has been set near or at its center. The pin hole is of a diameter that allows for insertion of the swivel pin fingers with moderate force.
It also provides for a small clearance or gap between it and the adjacent surfaces of the main body as a way of facilitating free pivoting movement of the two relative to eah other.
The mounting bracket's horizontal member 33 which is perpendicular to its vertical member 32 has attachment slots 34 for attachment to end bracket 41 using bolts 47. The end bracket has a horizontal member 43 perpendicular to vertical member 42.
The attachment holes 44 align with the attachment slots 34 of the mounting bracket when the horizontal member of the mounting bracket is placed over top the horizontal member of the end bracket accordingly. Bolts 47 can then be inserted and installed with the mating nuts (not shown) placed within the nut guards 45. The two brackets together with the bolts make up the adjustable clamp 30 the width of which can vary roughly by the length of the attachment slots themselves of the mounting bracket. Figs. 8 and 9 show the adjustable clamp in its narrowest and widest configurations respectively.
Openings 36 and 4b of the mounting and end brackets respectively reduce stiffening of the clamp to give it the preferred force of action.
One can now appreciate the benefits of the invention to not only self level as the handle of the golf pull cart is raised and lowered during handling, but to also be readily attached to and detached from the cart handle as needed.
The above description is intended in an illustrative rather than a restrictive sense, and variations to the specific configurations described may be apparent to skilled persons in adapting the present invention to other specific applications. Such variations are intended to form part of the present invention insofar as they are within the spirit °and scope of the claims below. For example, different sizes and shapes of the base and its parts may be used. The material composition and color of the device or of any of its parts thereof may also easily be changed as may be determined to improve robustness, esthetics, or otherwise. The type of interconnection between the main body and the adjustable clamp may also vary without negatively affecting the intended purpose.
