Abstract

A waste pipe is provided to transport waste liquids from one site to another, one of the sites being movalbe with respect to the other. The waste pipe is generally rigid over its length but has a flexible section at each end so that its position may be angularly adjusted. The pipe is adjustable in an axial direction by means of telescopic sections, and the flexible sections have essentially smooth inner surfaces which may be easily washed down.

Description

This invention relates to pipes for waste liquids such as pipes for removing waste from sewage holding tanks of recreational vehicles.
Connector pipes are needed to remove liquids from a large variety of reservoirs to direct the liquids to another place. For example, it is frequently required to remove waste liquids from holding tanks into a main disposal system such as the removal of sewage from small sewage holding tanks into a sewage system, the removal of waste water from domestic appliances into a drainage system, the removal of waste water from eavestroughs to a drain-away and the like.
Delivery vehicles for liquids such as heating oil, water, milk and chemicals and the like also require extension hoses for transport of the liquids from a tanker vehicle to a delivery site.
While flexible elongate hoses are satisfactory for some of these applications, especially those where relatively long tortuous transport paths are required, flexible hoses can have some disadvantages. For short transport distances the storage of flexible hoses can be frustrating, such hoses tend to have a resilient spring back towards a "remembered"
configuration. If there is insufficient length to coil easily, elaborate tie-down mechanisms may be necessary.
Moreover, such flexible hoses, especially those designed for the removal of various effluents are frequently made of corrugated flexible pipe because the corrugations add rigidity to the relatively large diameter hose which is required. Such corrugations collect dirt and, where sewage is involved, may become contaminated with sewage and are not easy to clean. The present inventor has addressed the problems involved in the provision of a relatively short extension pipe for the delivery of liquids especially effluent liquids such as sewage.
Accordingly the invention provides a rigid telescopic pipe for dispensing liquid between a reservoir of liquid and a disposal site, the reservoir of liquid and the disposal site being movable with respect to one another, and the telescopic pipe being extensible and retractable to extend between them, the telescopic pipe comprising at least two telescopic pipe sections with a liquid tight seal therebetween, a connector to an outlet of the liquid reservoir, a short flexible connector hose joining said connector to an upstream end of a first one of the pipe sections, and a dispensing outlet to the disposal site. The dispensing outlet may be connected to a downstream end through a short flexible disposal hose of a further one of the pipe sections.
The short flexible connector hose may have sufficient flexibility to provide for adjustment of horizontal angular orientation of the telescopic pipe with respect to the reservoir outlet. The short flexible disposal hose may also have sufficient flexibility to allow for bending of the disposal hose to direct the dispensing outlet downwardly into a below ground disposal site. Conveniently the connector hose and disposal hose are formed of flexible hose having a smooth inner wall and reinforced by a spiral metal winding encased about the outside of the hose.
Each pipe section may be provided with a stop member, stop members of adjacent pipe sections being interengagable one with the other in an extended position of said pipe sections guarding against accidental disconnection of the pipe section which might lead to spillage of the liquid being transferred.
At the discharge end of the telescopic pipe the projecting end of the pipe section may be provided with a curved outlet spout. This may be particularly useful when the extension pipe is to be used for emptying the sewage holding tank of a recreational vehicle into a septic system, for example, at a campground. In other circumstances a tapered outlet spout may be provided.
The short length of flexible hose may be provided with a flush out nozzle whereby the inside of the whole pipe may be connected to a source of clean water after emptying effluent and the inside of the hose may be cleaned.
Because the main body of the hose is smooth on the outside without corrugations or other ribs, it may be easily wiped down.
Exemplary embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows an unextended telescopic pipe according to the invention;
Figure lA shows a cross section of the flexible link in the pipe of Figure 1;
Figure 2 shows the interior of a portion of the extended pipe;
Figure 3 shows the pipe of Figure 1 in extended condition being used at different angles with respect to a reservoir;
Figure 4 shows the pipe being used from a down spout eavestrough; and Figure 5 shows a telescopic pipe similar to that of Figure 1 except that it has three sections.
A telescopic pipe 10 of Figures 1 and 2 comprises two telescopic sections 12, 14 of rigid pipe made from plastics material. While two sections are shown, three sections or even more may be more suitable for some purposes, allowing greater extension with possibly smaller unextended length.
Outer section 12 is of slightly larger diameter than inner section 14. A waxed felt seal may be provided between the outer section 12 and the inner section 14 which may prevent or mitigate and liquid seepage. Seals may alternatively be rubber or other conventional material. When sections 12, 14 are a close fit, no seal may be necessary. The extended pipe of Figure 1 may be retracted telescopically into a compact form for storage by sliding section 14 over section 12 as far as possible.
An interior stop or stabilizing collar 13 may be provided at a proximal end of section 12 to latch with an exterior stop or stabilizing collar 15 at the distal end of section 15 to prevent the sections becoming disengaged.
Seal is located on either or both sections between stops 13 and 15 or stops 13 and 15 may act as a seal.
In operation a connector 18, located at an end of pipe section 14, is connected through a short section of flexible connector hose 20 to the outlet 17 of an effluent tank through connector 18. Connector 18 may be of any convenient form to fit standard outlets. For example it may have a pair of cam lugs which tighten into sockets on rotation of the connector on the outlet to tighten the connector against the outlet. The telescopic pipe 10 is then extended by sliding section 12 outwardly over section 14 to extend the length of pipe 10 until it is sufficient length to reach the desired delivery point. Sections 12 and 14 as illustrated in the drawings may conveniently be about four feet in length since this will provide an extended length of around eight feet which is frequently sufficient or more than sufficient to reach from a recreation vehicle effluent tank to a septic system. If greater distances are required, the pipe 10 may be made of sections of greater length or additional telescopic sections may be provided. For example, three section may easily provide an extended length of 11 feet.
The short length of flexible plastics material or rubber connector hose 20 may be provided as a distal end portion of section 14 downstream of connector 18. The connector hose 20 may be a short length of flexible hose having an essentially smooth inner wall. A spiral metal reinforcement 21 may be wrapped about an outer surface of the hose and embedded into the plastics material or rubber.
The length for example, for the connector hose may be about 12.5 cm. The connector hose 20 should have sufficient flexibility to allow the pipe 10 to be angled where desired.
A connector 26 for connection through a length of ordinary garden hose to any suitable tap, may be provided on the periphery of the connecting link 20. Conveniently a smooth surfaced portion 24 is provided in the corrugated link 20 and the connector 26 is positioned through the smooth portion 24.
At the distal outlet end of the pipe 10 a short length of flexible disposal hose 30 may connect the downstream end of pipe 10 to a reducing link 28 which may be used as an exit nozzle. Disposal hose 30 may be generally similar to connector hose 20 and may have sufficient flexibility to allow it to bend to be directed downwardly into a delivery receptacle such as an underground septic system having a horizontal inlet at ground level.
Figure lA shows a cross section through flexible link 20 but it is to be noted that a cross section through flexible link 30 would be similar.
Figure 3 shows the pipe at different extensions and at different angles, both vertical and horizontal showing the ease at which the pipe 10 may be adjusted in different directions over different distances.
Figure 4 shows a different application for pipe 10 in distributing waste water from eavestrough at different angles over different distances.
When not in use the unextended pipe 10 may be stowed in suitable brackets under a recreational vehicle or in a customized compartment.
Telescopic pipe shown in Figure 4 also includes a delivery nozzle 28A which is straight and may be a connecting link for the disposal hose 30 shown in the previously described drawings.
While dimensions of the telescopic pipe are not critical and may be altered to suit different purposes, a three piece pipe as shown in Figure 5 may conveniently have _ g _ the following dimensions for use, for example, as a transfer pipe for effluent from the holding tank of a camper to a sewage pit or septic tank. Collar 18 may have an outside diameter of 79 millimetres and an inside diameter of 64.2 millimetres. Its length may be in the region of 40 millimetres and it may have a bevelled upstream edge so that the internal diameter flares outwardly to facilitate location of the collar on a spigot from the effluent tank of a camper. Pipe section 14 which fits into collar 18 at its upstream end may have an external diameter of 64 millimetres to fit reasonably tightly into collar 18. The inside diameter of pipe section is conveniently 60 millimetres. At the downstream end of pipe section 14 is a shoulder 15 forming a stop as has been previously described. The diameter of shoulder 15 may be 68 millimetres. A seal may fit into the recess behind the shoulder, i.e. upstream of the shoulder.
An intermediate pipe section 14A may have an outside diameter of 72 millimetres and an inside diameter of 68.5 millimetres. An internal shoulder may abut a seal 16 from the upstream side. The internal diameter in the region of the internal shoulder may be 64.5 millimetres. The intermediate pipe section also has an external shoulder at its downstream end increasing its external diameter in that region to 76 millimetres. Another seal may fit into the recess upstream of the shoulder. Pipe section 12 may have an outside diameter of 82 millimetres and an inside diameter of 76.5 millimetres. At its upstream end it may have an internal shoulder 13 reducing the internal diameter in that region to 72.5 millimetres.
The sections 12, 14, 14A may be fitted together as shown in Figure 5 to form an extensible liquid tight pipe.
A nozzle 28A may be provided to fit reasonably tightly on the distal or discharge end of pipe section 12. The upstream end of nozzle 28A may have an internal diameter of 82 millimetres and the nozzle itself may reduce in diameter so that the discharge end of the nozzle 28A has an outside diameter of only 78 millimetres. The nozzle 28A, of course, may be shaped and dimensioned to suit any particular purpose.

Claims (5)

1. A rigid telescopic pipe for dispensing liquid between a reservoir of liquid and a disposal site, the reservoir of liquid and the disposal site being movable with respect to one another and the telescopic pipe being extensible and retractable to extend between them, the telescopic pipe comprising at least two telescopic pipe sections with a liquid tight seal therebetween, a connector to an outlet of the liquid reservoir, a short flexible connector hose joining said connector to an upstream end of a first one of the pipe sections and a dispensing outlet to the disposal site.
2. A telescopic vent pipe as claimed in claim 1 in which said flexible connector hose and/or disposal hose has a smooth inner wall and spiral reinforcement imbedded therein.
3. A telescopic pipe as claimed in claim 1 in which the dispensing outlet is a discharge nozzle connected in liquid tight relation with a downstream end of the disposal hose, the discharge nozzle being curved whereby it is directable into a horizontal inlet of the disposal site.
4. A telescopic pipe as claimed in claim 3 in which hose connection means for a small bore hose is provided on the periphery of said upstream end portion to connect the telescopic pipe to a source of clean water to clean it.
5. A telescopic pipe as claimed in claim 1 in which each pipe section is provided with a stop member, stop members of adjacent pipe sections being interengagable one with the other in an extended position of said pipe sections.
