Description
A ONE-PIECE DOOR THRESHOLD AND DOOR SILL ASSEMBLY
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates generally to doorframes and more particularly to an improved door threshold and door sill assembly.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Already known in the prior art and also largely used, there are the composite door thresholds. An example of a prior art composite door threshold (10) is shown in figure 1, which comprises in combination a wooden base plate(12)~having an upper surface (14) slightly slanted, for extending horizontally across the bottom of a doorway (16) and an aluminium section, or as illustrated an assembly of an aluminium section (18) with a plastic section (20), set over the base plate (12) and covering the front edge (22) , the back edge (24) and the upper surface (14) thereof. The aluminium section (18) defines a downwardly slanted sill (26) to permit water to run off toward the exterior of the building and the plastic section (20) forms a raised threshold (28) over which a closed door (30) is placed. Such composite door

Such composite door
2 0 thresholds have many drawbacks. They are expensive to produce mainly because of the aluminium section which is an expensive product and also because of time required on the production line to fit all the parts together. Furthermore, there is also a risk of water infiltration that damage the wooden base plate with time.
There is thus presently a need for an improved door threshold which will be a lot more 2 5 cheaper to produce and to install than prior art door threshold. There is also a need for a door threshold which would not be damage by water infiltration.
There is thus presently a need for an improved door threshold which will be a lot more 2 5 cheaper to produce and to install than prior art door threshold. There is also a need for a door threshold which would not be damage by water infiltration.
3 0 An object of the present invention is to provide a door threshold that satisfies the above-mentioned needs.
According to the present invention, that object is achieved with a door threshold and door sill assembly obtained by injection molding of at least one thermoplastic. The assembly is a solid one piece unit and comprises a downwarly slanted sill portion and threshold portion 35 integrally form on the sill comprises. The assembly has a flat bottom surface to extend horizontally across the bottom of a doorway. Preferably, to reduce even more the production cost, the threshold is completely made of recycled thermoplastic.
Advantageously, a door threshold and sill assembly according to the present invention is very simple and not expensive to produce compared with the prior art door thresholds mainly because of the raw material used and also because of the fact that the many assembling steps required for producing the prior art composite thresholds are completely eliminated. A door threshold and sill assembly according to the present invention is also believed to be very advantageous as it is not affected by the problem of water infiltration experienced with the prior art door threshold.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF TIE DRAWINGS
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional side view of a prior art door threshold; and Figure 2 is a cross-sectional side view of a door threshold and sill assembly according to a preferred embodiment of the the present invention.
DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
Referring to figure 2, the door threshold and door sill assembly (30) according to a 2 0 preferred embodiment of the present invention is a solid one piece plastic unit obtained by injection molding of at least one thermoplastic. It comprises a downwarly slanted sill portion (32) to permit water to run out toward the exterior of the building and a threshold portion (34) integrally form on the sill (32). The assembly (30) has a flat bottom surface (34) to extend horizontally across the bottom of a doorway (36). Preferably, to reduce even more the 2 5 production cost, the assembly (30) is completely made of recycled thermoplastic.
Although a preferred embodiment of the present invention has been described in detail herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to this precise embodiment arid that various changes and modifications 3 0 may be effected therein without departing from the scope or spirit of the present invention.
