Description

REVERSIBLY PEELABLE ,Sli A~,~G ~;~ l FOR
IND~VIDUAL PILL CONTAINERS

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

a) Field of the in~rention The present inverltion relates to a peelable sealing sheet especially ~leci~P~ for closing in a reversible m~nner a plurality of individual pill cont~iners~
The invention also relates to a set of individual pill cont~;npTs Comrri~ing a sheet of plastic m~tPri~l ~Pfining a plurality of individual cont~iners closed in a reversible ~nner by a peelable sealing sheet.

b) Brief des.l ;E,lion of the prior art It is of common practice in the ph~ euLical field to prepare sets of individual cont~iner~ co. ,L~ .g pills and/or tablets to be ~lnnini~tered to a patient. Each of these cont~iner~ contains pills and/or tablets that the patient has to take together at the same time dunng the day over a given period of time (preferably one week).
To prepare such sets of individual pill c~ e. ~ for use by a patient, it is also2 o of ct~mmnn practice to use a sheet of plastic m~tPri~l in which a plurality of lecesses are molded. Each of these rccesses defines a small upwardly opened cont~inPr that can be filled with pills. ~fter filling, all the co~ are closed by means of a sealing sheet on which can be printed all desirable indic~tion~, like the patient's name, the date and hour of ~flmini~tration~ etc. As can be understood, the indications are printed and 2 5 f(nrm~tte~ onto the sealing sheet so that each group of inform~tion referring to a given cnnt~inPr is po~ition~d in regard to the said cont~inpr Teanng lines are provided on both the cont~inPr~ fining sheet and the sealing sheet to allow for easy separation of the individual pill co..~
In practice, the sealing sheet can be made of plastic m~t~ri~l and be ther_o-3 o sealed onto the co~ e~ pfining sheet. ~ltPrn~tively, the sealing sheet can be made of paper and be glued onto the u~nt~inPr-~Pfining sheet.

For further infonn~tion as to the structure, m~mlf~cture and use of such sets ofindividual pill containers, reference can be made to U.S. patent No. 5,788,079 and its C~n~ n cvulll~ly~L No. 2,207,045 both in the name of the present,, .v~ lor, and to all the prior art that was cited during their prosecution.
If, so far, the exi.~ting sets of individual pill CC~ f~ have proved to be particularly useful and efficient, they still suffer from a major defiçient~y, viz. the fact that once a given cont~inF~r of the set is opened by tearing or peeling off the co,l~i~ol-ding portion of the sealing sheet, it cannot be closed-again. Thus, if there has been any mistake in the way one or more of the cont~iner~ were origin~lly filled with pills, there is no way of ~ ing this error and one must get rid of the whole setSi~larly, if the patient or his/her nurse has not opened the right cont~inPr by inad~G~lel~ce, there is no way of rey~ g this error and one cannot close up the ina~lvGl~lllly opened co"l 1;l, SIJMMARY OF l~IE INVENTION
An object of the invention is to provide a peelable sealing sheet made of paper,which, thanks to its ~llu~ e, solves all the problems related to the above mentioned deficiency in~mllch as it allows each of the cont~iners of the set to be opened and reclosed whenever desired, even when the cont~iner is still part of the set.
2 o Another object of the invention is to provide a set of irldividual pill cont~iners of the above mentinn~d type, wherein the cont~inF~r~ fining sheet is sealed with a peelable sealing sheet which, as m~ntinne~l hereinabove, allows each of the cont~iners of the set to be reclosed whenever desired.
Like all the existing sets, the set of individual pill cont~inprs according to the 2 5 invention coll.~ es a c~ FI~efining sheet which is made of plastic m~t~.ri~l and has a top surface cnmpri~ing a given number of spaced part cavities embossed therein. Each of the cavities is upwardly opened and thus defines a container surrounded by a flange.
Each of the flanges that are not directly adjacent to one side of the co. lL~ I -defining sheet, are provided with a central dotted line punched therein to make it possible to 30 detach each of the co"~ -F..~ from the col,l~;llt,~ ~Aja~.P.nt to it and thus from the cc~llL~ el-de.fining sheet whenever desired.

, CA 02264339 1999-02-26 Like the ~xi~tin~ sets disclosed in the inventor's previous U.S. and C~nA~iAn patents mentit)n~ hereinabove, the set of individual pill co~ FI according to the invention also compri.~es a sealing sheet made of paper and position~ on top of the top surface of the cont~in~r~ finin~ sheet in order to close each of the cnntAinFr~. This sealing sheet has a top surface and a bottom surface and is shaped and sized to cover all the contAin~r~ and the surrounding flanges of the contAinFr-definin~ sheet. The bottom surface of the seAling sheet have bands that are positioned, shaped and sized to be in superposition on top of the flanges of the container~ fining sheet. These bands are coated with a self-a&esive m~teri~l and are plo~G~;lGd by a plo~c~iLivG peelable paper 0 covering until the sealing sheet is in~t~ onto the cc~ clefining sheet The bands are provided with tearing lines positioned to be in superposition on top of the dotted lines of the cont~iner-~lefinin~ sheet to make it possible to tear the sealing sheet into a number of cover pieces collc~o~ding to the nl~mber of ccmt~in~r~ and thus to detach each of the co,.~ without having to open the same.
As aforesaid, this basic structure is knownper se. However, in accolda~lce with the invention, it is ihul)lovGd in that the sealing sheet compriie~ five ~liLr~lG"t layers including:
b,) a top layer made of paper and having an upper top layer surface ~fining the top surface of the sealing sheet, and a lower top layer surface;
2 o b2) a m~linm layer made of paper and having an upper m~ ml layer surface and a lower me~ lm layer surface;
b3) a bottom layer made of paper and having an upper bottom layer surface and a lower bottom layer surface;
b4) a first layer of self-adhesive m~t~riAl positioned bcLwGc~ the lower top 2 5 layer surface and the upper m~-lillm layer surface; and b5) a second layer of self-adhesive mAteriAl positioned between the lower medium layer surface and the upper bottom layer surface.
The medium layer b2) has precut m~ lm layer bands ~1efining the bands of the sealing sheet once the sealing sheet is installed. The medium layer b2) also has precut 3 o medium layer central pieces.

Similarly, the bottom layer b3) has precut bottom layer bands that are po~itir~n~c1 shaped and sized to be in exact superposition below the medium layOE bands. The bottom layer b3) also has precut bottom layer central pieces that are po~ition~ shaped and sized to be in exact superposition below the medium layer central pieces.
In practice, the precut bottom layOE bands of the bottom layer b3) define the protective peelable papOE covering that is peeled off before installation of the sealing sheet on top of the cont~in~.r-~lefining sheet. The central pieces of the bottom layer b3) and the merlillm layer b2) are sticked to each other and to the lower top layer surface, so as to form altogether a plurality of non-sticking protective pads fitting on top of the cavities made in the cont~in~r-defining sheet.
MoreovOE, the tearing lines ofthe sealing sheet consist oftwo sets oftearing lines respectively provided on the top and medium layers which can thus be divided out into parts forming the cover pieces.
Thanks to the structure of the sealing sheet, each top layer part to which the bottom and medium layer central pieces are sticked, can be peeled off in a reversible manner from the me~linm layer bands surrounding the corresponding cont~inP.r to give access to the pill(s) contained therein.
The invention and its advantages will be better understood upon reading the following non-restrictive description of a pl~r~lled embodiment of the invention, made 2 o with reference to the accol~ uyillg drawings.

DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION

The set l of individual pill co~ x according to the plcr~lled embodirnent of ~he invention as shown in the acco~pa~lymg drawings compri~es a container-~lefining 2 o sheet 3 made of plastic m~t~ri~l, which has a top surface compri~ing a given nurnber of spaced apar~ cavities S embossed therein. As is shown in Figure 1, each of the cavities 5 is upwardly opened and defines a cnnt~iner that is ~ ou~ded by a flange 7. As is shown in Figures 7 and 8, the upper edges of each of the cavities 5 are preferably shaped to form a small, dowllw~ lly e?ctP.n~1ing recess 6 that extends all around the 2 5 corresponding cavity. The utility of such recesses 6 will be Pxpl~ine~l hereinafter. As is clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2, each of the flanges 7 that are not directly adjacent to one side of the cr~"~ r~ fining sheet are provided with a central dotted line 9 punched therein to make it possible to detach each of the cr-~ x 5 from the adjacent cont~iners, and thus from the rem~ining of the cnnt~;nçr-~lPfining sheet 3 whenever 3 o desired.

Preferably, the cnnt~inPrs defined by the cavities S of the cont~inPr-d~fining sheet 3 are positioned to form rows and column . In accordance with a pa~ticularly pl~r~lled embodiment of the invention, the cont~inpr-~lefining sheet 3 is devised to defme twenty-eight cont~iners 5, which are positioned to define seven rows and four s colllmne. The four columns correspond to the four periods of the day when pills are usuaily given (i.e. morning, noon, evening and night). The seven rows co~ ,uo~d to the days of one week. However, it can be appreciated that the numbers of c~ 5 as well as the numbers of columns and/or rows could be changed as need be.
In the case where, as is shown in the acco~yillg drawings, the cont~iner~ S
10 are poeitinnPd to define several rows and columns, depressions lO are prefOEably provided in the flanges 7 at the ;..l~ecL;on.e of perpendicular dotted lines 7 to give a finger access to the sealing sheet used to close the cavities 5. These depressions lO can be of any shape: square (as is shown), round, etc. It is compulsory however that, on the one hand, they be located within the limits of the flanges 7 and, on the othOE hand, there 15 is at least one depression 10 adjacent each cavity 5. The latter requirement can be achieved by providing depressions at the h~ eclions of all the perpendicular dotted lines 7 or of only one out of two adjacent perpendicular lines, as is shown in Figures 1 and 2. As is also shown in the same Figures, the size of the depressions 10 may affect the shape of the cavities 5 since, in order to satisfy the first requirement mentioned 2 o hereinabove, each depression must be within the limits of the corresponding flanges 7 in order to be into contact with the adjacent cavities.
The set 1 also comprises a sealing sheet l l made of paper and po.~iti~ned on top of the top surface of the co~ g-defining sheet 3 in order to close each of the COI IlSli l~r.~ ;~ 5 . More specifically, the sealing sheet 11 is shaped and sized to cover at least 25 alltheco..~ 5 andthe~ ou~ ,gflanges70fthecont~in~ finingsheet3.The sealing sheet l 1 is also provided with tearing lines as will be ç~pl~ined hereinafter, which are positioned to be in superposition on top of the dotted lines of the cont~;npr-defining sheet 3 to make it possible to tear the sealing sheet 11 into a number of cover pieces col.esl,ollding to the number of cnnt~in~or~ 5 and thus to detach each of the 3 o cont~in~r~ 5 without having to open the same. As is shown, the sealing sheet 1 l is preferably larger in size than the cont~iner defining sheet 3 so as to define a y~ruldled flap 12 that can be used to f~ilit~te inst~ tion and positior~ing of the sealing sheet 11 on top of the cont~;ner-tlPfin;n~ sheet 3.
In accordance with the invention, the sealing sheet 11 is made of five layers including:
bl) a top layer 13 made of paper and having an upper top layer surface 15 and a lower top layer surface 17;
b2) a medium layer 19 made of paper and having an upper medium layer surface 21 and a lower medium layer surface 23;
b3) a bottom layer 29 made of paper and having an upper bottom layer lo surface 31 and a lower bottom layer surface 33;
b4) a first layer of self-adhesive m~teri~l 39 position~l between the lower top layer surface 17 and the upper medium layer surface 21; and b5) a second layer of self-adhesive m~tPri~l 41 po.cit1onP.cl bcLwt;~ll the lower medium layer surface 23 and the upper bottom layer surface 31.
AsitcanbelmrlP~tnod,theuppertoplayersuIface 15 ofthetoplayer 13 defines the top surface of the sealing sheet. Advantageously, this top surface may comrri~e information 43 (see Figure 1) printed on it in such a manner as to be positioned on top of each cavity 5 and thus to coll~s~olld to what is contained in the corresponding co,.t~ er. This inform~tion is of course related to the patient's prescription and may 2 o include the name of the patient, the day and time of ~timinictration~ an i(ientifie~tion of the room or table of the patient, etc. . .
As is better shown in Figures 1 and 4, the me~ lm layer 19 has precut me~ ml layer bands 25 shaped, sized and po~itiont-,~ to be in superposition on top of the flanges 7 ofthe cont~in~r~ finin~e sheet 3. The medium layer 19 also has precut central pieces 27 shaped, sized and positioned fit within the recess 6 of each cavity and to be in superposition on top of the openings of the containers 5. The medium layer 19 further has precut side pieces 28 shaped, sized and po.~itione(l to be in superposition on top of the depression 10 made in the cont~iner-~lefinin~ sheet 3.
As is shown in Figures 1 and 3, the bottom layer 29 also has precut bottom layer3 o bands 35 that are position.- l shaped and sized to be in superposition below the me-lilml layer bands 25. The bottom layer also has precut bottom layer central pieces 37 positi~ n~ shaped and sized to be in exact superposition below the mer~ m layer central pieces 27. As is better shown in Figures 7 and 8, the central pieces 27 and 37 of the medium and bottom layers are actually sized so that the bottom layer central pieces 37 rnay fit with the recesses 6 provided all around the cavities 5. The bottom layer 29 5further has precut side pieces 3~ sized, shaped and positic-n~l to fit into the depressions 10 (see Figures 7 and 8).
As it can now be lm~erstood, the bottom layer bands 35 define a protective peelable paper covering that must be peeled offas shown in Figure 6 before in.~t~ tion of the sealing sheet 11 on top of the cnnt~iner--lP.fining sheet 5. Once the bands 35 are 10peeled off, the sealing sheet 11 can be positioned on top of the a nt~inP.r--lefining sheet 5 and be cormected thereto by means of the second layer of a&esive m~teri~l 41 that extend just under the mç-lillm layer bands 25 that fit onto the flanges 7 (see Figure 5).
The bottom and me~ m layer central pieces 27 and 37 are sticked to each other and to the lower top layer surface 17 by means of the first and second layers of self-5a&esive material 39 and 41, respectively, and they altogether form non-sticking~loLe~;Live pads fit~ng on top of the cavities S made in the c~ fining sheet 3 (see Figure 5). Sirnilarly, the bottom and m~-iillm layer side pieces 28 and 38 are sticked to each other and to the lower top layers surface 17 by means of the first and second layers of self-a&esive m~t~ri~l 39 and 41, ~ e.;~iv-ely, and they altogether form non-sticlfing 2 oelements fitting on top of the depressions 10 made in the cont~in~r-d~fining sheet 3.
As we already disclosed hereinabove and is shown in Figure 7, every bottom layer central piece 37 is shaped, sized and positioned to fit within the recess 6 of the co~ Jonding cavity 6. The advantage of such a po~itionin~ is that, even if there is some ~1imF:n.~ional slacks in the size of the cavities 5 of the Ch~ li l IPI -defining sheet 3 due to 2sthe mnl~ling conditions and/or some mi.~li~mPnt during in~t~ tinn ofthe sealing sheet 11, there is still no risk for the pills within the cnnt~iner~ to come into contact wvith the layer 41 ofthe self-adhesive m~t~ri~l -As aforesaid, tearing lines are provided on the sealing sheet 11 so as to tear the same into a number of cover pieces corresponding to the number of cnnt~in~orc 5. As is 3 oshow4 these sets of tearing lines 16, 26 and 36 are lc;s~e~ilively provided on the top, m~ m and bottom layers 13, 19 and 29 so that the sealing sheet 11, once in~t~llffl, can be divided out into parts forming the cover pieces.
- As is shown in the acco~,.p~y drawings, the tearing lines 16, 26 and 36 are positinned to be in exact superposition above each other and above the dotted lines 9 of the cnnt~in~r-defining sheet 3.
As can now be understood (see Figures 7 and 8), the part of the top layer 13 defining each cover piece to which the bottom and m~ m layer central pieces 27 and 37 are sticked, can be peeled off in a reversible m~nner from the medium layer bands 25 surrounding the corresponding cont~iner to give access to the pill(s) "P". If a given cont~in~r 5 has been opened by inadv~ ce, it can be reclosed by reapplying the colles~ollding part of the top layer on it. This solves in a very simple yet effiçiçnt manner all the problems m~.ntinn~cl hereinabove, which are ple3e.llly enco~leled with the existing sets.
As was also disclosed hereinabove, the depressions 10 and the coll~s~ollding non-sti~.1fing elPment~ defined by the side pieces give an easy finger access to the parts of the top layer 13 ~lefining each cover piece, once each contained has been sep~r~te~l from the others. This feature and its advantages are already known (see, for example, U.S. patentNo. 3,933,245 to MULLEN).
Preferably, positioning means 51 can be provided on at least the top surface of the c~nt~in~r-clefining sheet 3 and on the sealing sheet 11 to ensure proper po.~i~ioning of both of them with respect to each other during installation, and thus exact superposition of the bands and tearing lines of the sealing sheet over the co"~L,ullding flanges 7 and doted lines 9 ofthe cont~in~r-~efining sheet S. The po~itioning means 51 may consist of holes as shown, which may cooperate with pegs provided onto a recessed support used for f~cilit~ting their inst~ tion Further detail regarding this feature and its advantages can be found in U.S. patent No. 5,788,079 and its col,e~.)l~ding C~n~ n COUI1l~ No. 2,207,045 already referred to hereinabove.
Assnming now that, for any reasons, one has to open all the c~t-t~ S at the same time, an "oper~ing" tool 53 can be provided, as shown in Figure 9. This tool consists of a thick plate having cavities 55 shaped, sized and po~itinn~cl to recei~e all the 3 o containers 5 of a given set 1. Vertically projecting pins 57 are provided on the top sutface of the plate. These pins 57 are positioned in such a marmer as to extend just ~ .

below the depressions 10, at the i~ se~;Lions of the dotted lines 9. When a set to be opened is pressed down onto the plate, the pins 57 p~,ro,d~ the depressions and cause the side pieces 38 and 28 to move up and the co~ s~llding parts of the top layer 13 to peel off from the me~ m layer bands 25.
In use~ the sealing sheet may easily be ~ l l ri1clL~cd by first coTm~ ng together all its layers and then passing the obtained l~min~tecl sheet through a press with cutting means to form the central pieces, bands, side pieces and tearing lines.
Although orlly one ~,ercllcd embodiment of 1he invention has been described in detail herein and illustrated in the accol"~al ying dra~vings, it is to be understood that 0 the invention is not limited to this embodiment and that various changes and modifications may be effected therein without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

6. The improved set of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein each of the cavities has upper edges shaped to form a recess and the bottom and medium layer central pieces are shaped, sized and positioned to fit within the so formed recesses.
7. The improved set of any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the container defining sheet also comprises depressions provided in its flanges at the intersection of perpendicular dotted lines and wherein the medium and bottom layers of the sealing sheet have precut side pieces made in their precut medium and bottom layer bands, said side pieces being shaped, sized and positioned to be in superposition on top of, and fit into the depressions, thereby giving an easy finger access to the top layer parts.
8. A sealing sheet for a container-defining sheet, said sealing sheet comprising:
b1) a top layer made of paper and having an upper top layer surface and a lower top layer surface;
b2) a medium layer made of paper and having an upper medium layer surface and a lower medium layer surface, said medium layer having precut medium layer bandssurrounding precut medium layer central pieces, b3) a bottom layer made of paper and having an upper bottom layer surface and a lower bottom layer surface, said bottom layer having precut bottom layer bands that are positioned shaped and sized to be in exact superposition below the medium layer bands, said bottom layer also having precut bottom layer central pieces positioned, shaped and sized to be in exact superposition below the medium layer central pieces, b4) a first layer of self adhesive material positioned between the lower top layer surface and the upper medium layer surface; and b5) a second layer of self adhesive material positioned between the lower medium layer surface and the upper bottom layer surface, whereby:
the bottom layer bands define a protective peelable paper covering that can be peeled off before installation of the sealing sheet on top of the container-defining sheet;
the bottom and medium layer central pieces are sticked to each other and to the lower top layer surface and altogether form non-sticking protective pads fitting on top of cavities made in the container-defining sheet;
the tearing lines of the sealing sheet consist of two sets of tearing lines respectively provided on the top and medium layers which can thus be divided out into parts forming cover pieces for said cavities; and each top layer part to which the bottom and medium layer central pieces are sticked, can be peeled off in a reversible manner from the medium layer bands.
9. The sealing sheet of claim 8, wherein the top surface of said sealing sheet comprises information printed on it in such a manner as to be positioned on top of each cover piece.
