Abstract

A safety apparatus for use with a band saw having a hand slidable table is disclosed. The apparatus employs a pusher bar slidably mounted on the table which remains between the blade and the hand of an operator.

Description

CA 022~S~3 l998- l2- l4 F6 1 10 ( (~ ) SAFETY DEVICE FOR A BAND SAW ADAPTED FOR CUTTING FROZEN FISH

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:

The present invention relates to a safety device for use with a saw, more particularly to a safety device used with a band saw to cut frozen fish.

In cutting block material, such as frozen fish, the blocks are placed on a reciprocating table and are passed repeatedly through a saw and typically a band saw. These band saws generally employ a protective guard about a portion of the blade to prevent injury. For machines commonly available, the guard only extends downwardly a predetermined amount leaving the blade exposed a distance between the table which carries the block, upwardly to some point just above the block to be cut. More particularly an exposed portion of the band saw exists which is typically greater than the height of the blocks to be cut.

, ~

CA 022~ 3 l998- l2- l4 F6110(C) As will be readily apparent the exposed blade presents a safety hazard.
Therefore there exists a need for a method which will allow cutting while keeping the hand of the operator away from the blade. Several patents deal with cutting fish and solve the safety problem by employing remote devices such as U.S. 4,262,565, U.S. 5,125,305 and U.S. 3,832,929. A different method for preventing injury without using a remote feeding device is disclosed in U.S.
4,204,444 and involves a blade guard.

However for an individual operator the blade guard is relatively inconvenient and an easier method of insuring safety is desired.

The instant invention provides a machine having a band saw rotating adjacent to a movable table, the table being adapted to carry blocks to be cut by the band saw, the table having mounted thereon a hand operable slidable pusher bar assembly comprising mounting rails fixed to the table in a manner perpendicular to the plane of movement of the table; a pusher bar slidably mounted on the rails to allow material on the table such as frozen fish to be urged against and cut by the blade of the saw while keeping the hand of the operator away from the blade.

CA 02255553 l998- 12- l4 F6 1 10 ( C ) BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a band saw machine with the safety mechanism installed.

Figure 2 is a detail of the reciprocating tray containing an item to be cut together with a blade used on a conventional band saw.

Figure 3 is a detail of the reciprocating tray with the item to be cut and the blade used on a band saw together with the safety device of the instant invention.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT:

Referring to Figure 1 a standard slicing machine 10 such as a Butcher Boy model B16 sold by the Lasar Manufacturing Company, Inc., of Los Angeles, California or a Pearce Heavy Duty Band Saw Model 5D as manufactured by Pearce Manufacturing Company, Inc., Danvers, Massachusetts, is shown. Table 12 is mounted so as to be movable horizontally along the fence 14. The blade 16 .

CA 022~ 3 l998- l2- l4 F6110 ( C ) fits into a slot 18 between the table 12 and the fence 14. Slabs of material 40 such as frozen fish, can be rested on table 12 up against the fence 14 and as the table 12 is moved along the fence 14 a portion is cut or sliced off by the blade 16. The thickness of the slice will be the horizontal distance between the blade 16 and the fence 14. The safety mechanism 22 shown in more detail in Figure 3 is installed on the table 12.

In Figure 2 the movable table 12 has a follower bar 13. This combination is shown with the fence 14 which forms a right angle so that the lower horizontal portion 15 of the fence 14 is co-planar with the table 12 and the upper vertical portion 17 of the fence 14 is perpendicularto the table 12. A slab of material such as frozen fish is placed on the table 12 up against the bar 13. Pressure is applied to the material 40 by hand until the slab of material rests against the upper portion 17 of the fence. Table 12 is then moved along upper portion 17 through the blade 16 so that a piece of material is cut off which represents the distance 19 ~etween the upper portion 17 and the blade 16. The table 12 is then returned to its original position, the slab is then again forced against the upper portion 17 and the table moved through the blade 16 a second time. This movement is repeated until the material 40 is sliced through. The pressure being applied to the ~ .

CA 022~ 3 l998- l2- l4 F6110 ( C ) material 40 and urging it towards the upper portion 17 is by hand so the hand, as the material 40 slab gets thinner, approaches the blade 16. This is an inherently unsafe operation.

In Figure 3 is shown the invention where the movable table 12 is mounted with a pusher bar mechanism 22. This mechanism is formed by mounting two substantially parallel rails 24 and 26 on the movable table 12 perpendicular to the plane of movement of table 12. A pusher bar 28 is slidably mounted on the rails 24 and 26 to allow pressure to be exerted by means of the bar 28 on a material 40 placed on table 12. One convenient method of mounting the rails 24 and 26 is with mounting brackets 30 fixed to the table 12 to maintain the rails 24 and 26 perpendicularto the plane of movement of the table 12. These brackets can be placed in such a way that the pusher bar 28 cannot travel far enough to get into the path of the blade 16 as the table 12 is moved to cut the material 40. Borders 32 can also be mounted which define the edges of a slab of the material 40 to be cut. In operation the table is moved to th~ end 21 of the fence 14. The pusher bar 28 is moved by hand as far away from the upper portion 17 of the fence as possible. A slab of material 40 such as fish is placed on the table 12 and the pusher bar 28 is slid towards the fence putting pressure on the slab of material 40 F6 1 1 0 ( C ) until the material 40 abuts the upper portion 17 of the fence 14. Pressure is exerted on the pusher bar 28 by hand and the table is moved by hand along the upper portion 17 through the blade 16 cutting off a slab of material 40 having a width 19. The table is returned to the end 21, pressure is again exerted on the bar 28 and the slab of material 40 and the operation is repeated until the material is sliced. The mounting brackets 30 prevent the pusher bar 28 from contacting the blade 16. The borders 32 insure that the material is urged in a generally perpendicular manner against the upper portion 17.

Other modifications to the invention described within the skill of the art are within the scope of this invention.
