Abstract

A surround for a leafcutter bee nest block includes a folded blank of cardboard material that is a snug fit over the back and sides of the nest block. The nest block is held in place using strapping around the surround and across the front face of the nest block. The blank can be shipped and stored in an unfolded, flat condition.

Description

FOLDABLE NEST SURROUND
The present invention relates to leafcutter bee nests and more particularly to a surround for a nest block.
Leafcutter bees are bred for the purpose of pollinating agricultural crops.
They are propagated in a nest consisting of a rectangular block of either synthetic foam or a laminated material that is perforated from front to back with a large number of holes. The block is backed with an air-pervious fibreboard backing sheet.
The backing sheet provides a solid base for the bees to start laying eggs, while its air-permeability prevents a build-up of moisture and consequent mould growth in the nests. The joint between the backing sheet and the nest must be tight in order to prevent the entry of parasites.
The conventional system for mounting the fibreboard backing sheet on the nest block and preventing the entry of parasites has involved the use of elaborate wooden surrounds. Because these surrounds are quite bulky and heavy, recent proposals have involved the development of moulded plastic surrounds. While they are not as heavy, they are still bulky and consequently difficult to store in the off-season.
The present invention relates to the provision of an alternative surround.
According to the present invention there is provided a surround for a leafcutter bee nest block of the type comprising a perforate block with a flat back face, opposed side faces and opposed end faces, said surround comprising a flat blank folded to form a back side engageable over the back face of the nest block, and side and end walls for engaging over the side and end walls respectively of the nest block.
The surround is thus folded from a single flat blank that is easy to manufacture, ship and store.
The blank is preferably made from corrugated cardboard material. This ' CA 02254435 2004-O1-14 is the conventional corrugated cardboard with inner and outer smooth layers of paper board and a corrugated paper core. Other materials can be used, however, for example hollow cored plastic board material.
The preferred nest includes a backing between the back face of the nest block and the back side of the box. This is an air-pervious sheet. In the preferred embodiments it is a composite backing with an inner layer of non-woven, bonded fibrous material adjacent the nest block and an outer layer of fibreboard.
The nest block is held in the surround by any appropriate retaining mechanism. The currently preferred retainer is a set of flexible plastic material packing straps that wrap around the box, and across the front face of the nest block with its ends heat sealed together.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an exemplary embodiment of the present invention:
Figure 1 is an isometric view of a nest assembled according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a cross-section along line 2 - 2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a partial cross section along line 3 - 3 of Figure 1; and Figure 4 is a plan view of a box blank for assembling a surround according to the present invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, and particularly to Figure 1, there is illustrated a leafcutter bee nest 10 that includes a nest block 12 of foam material perforated with a large number of holes 14 in the usual way. A
surround 16 extends across the back and over the sides of the nest.
The nest surround 16 includes a box 18 of corrugated cardboard material. This is the conventional corrugated cardboard with inner and outer smooth layers of paper board and a corrugated core. The nest block 12 is seated in the box _. ~ ..
18 and is held in place with a set of straps 2G wrapp~:d around the box and across the fmnt face of the nest block. The straps are thermoplastic packing straps with their ends overlapped and heat sealed tc~gather~
The nest black 72 'is of known form, having a rectangular back face 22, a corresponding rectangular front fare 2~., opposed e~ide~ faces 25 and two opposed end faces 28. Nesting holes 1d ext~nd ti~rough the block, from the front face to the back face.
The back face of the block is covered with a pad ~0. This is an air-pervious pad of synthetic filaments, pref~rabiy a pad of non-woven, banded fibres to provide an air circulation layer at ~Gne back of the nest block. Qver the back of the pad 30 is a fibreboard panel ~2. Thls is a rigid panel with some moisture permeability.
Both the pad and the fibreboard panel are of the same size and shape as the back face 22 of the nest block 12.
The surround box 1 S is fomaed from a flat blank 34. In the centre of the blank Is a back panel 36 that forms the back side of the box when the blank is folded.
The back pane( is bounded ~ an opposite sides by side score lines ~8. Outside the score lines are respective side sections 40 of the blank. The back panel 36 is bounded at the ends by' transverse end score lines ~2" which era the boundaries between the back panes and the end sections 44 of the blank. The end score lines 42 also extend across the side sections 40. Between tine side sections 40 and the end sections 44 are cut lines 46 aligned with the side scare lines 38. Across the middle of each end section is a medial score line 48. Immediately inside each of the end score lines 42, in the back panel 3B, are slots 50 that extend along the end scare lines.
There are two slots 50 spaced apart clang each of the end score lines 42. .The outermost edge of each end section 44 is prwid~ati with tw~r ~ fiabs-5-~" ~
that are of approximately the same length and at the same positions across the 'blank as the slots 5D.
To assemble the surround, the e~ide sections 40 of the blank are folded forward along the side score lines 3S. Those portions of the side sections beyond the end score lines 42 are locking sections. They are folded ir~wa~rds to extend along the end score tines. The end sections ~4 are then folded up along the end score lines 42 and folded in two along th~a medial score lines 48 to capture the locking sections of the side panels between outer end panels 50 and Inner end panels 58, which are the parts of the end sections separated by the medial scare line. The tabs 52 are engaged in the slots 50 to hold the end sections and this surround folded. The complete assembly has side walls 60 provided by the centre parts of the side sections 4a and end walls 62 provided by the folded end sections 44 and the end locking sections captured b~atween them.
C7nce the tslenk has teen folded, the flareboard panel 32 is set in place on the back side ~5, the pad 3f3 is placed on the fibr~sbaard panel and the nest block is set in place on the pad 30. The front face 2~4 of the block is filush with the front edges of the side. and end walls of the surround. 'The surround is completed with the straps 20, which are wrapped around the surround and nest block and fastened in place. Strapping systems for doing this are known and commercially available.
While one particular embodirx~ent of the present invention has been d~scrib~d in the foregoing, it is tn be understood that other embodiments are possible within the scope of the invention and are intended to be included herein. The material of the blank 34 may be any suitable, foldable st-rff material. The straps 20 need nofi be thermoplastic straps with their ends heat sealed. cJthep° types of straps and other fastening mechanisms are possible. 'With flexible plastic straps, buckle type fasteners may ba used. In some cases it may be desirabie to use n~et~af straps and appropriate fasteners. Any suitable strapping material is intended to be included-The invention is therefore to be considered limited solely by the scope of the appended claims.
