Description

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR TRACING ROAD MARKING LINES
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
a1 field of the invention The present invention belongs to the field of road markings, and more particularly concerns a method and an apparatus for tracing road marking lines.
b) brief description of prior art Road lines are usually painted directly on the asphalt of roads, using 1o various means and apparatus. However, they need to be redone regularly since traffic and weather tend to erode the paint quickly, especially in harsh climates.
For this reason, there is a need for a method and apparatus to paint road lines in a more durable manner, where the paint would be protected from various sources of erosion.
OBJECT AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The object of the present invention is to provide a method and an apparatus for tracing road lines that allows the paint to be less susceptible to erosion than with the traditional method and apparatus.
In accordance with the present invention, the above object is achieved with a method for tracing a road marking line on a road, comprising:
- knurling or cutting a plurality of parallel grooves in the road to define the requested road marking line; and - distributing paint into the parallel grooves.
The present invention also provides an apparatus for tracing road marking lines, the apparatus being adapted to be installed on a motorized vehicle and comprising:
3 o - right hand or left hand operation element;
2 - a case hardened steel wheel or a cutter fixed on a lower portion of the operation element and extending in a vertical plane, the case hardened steel wheel having a set of radially extending teeth parallel to each other, the teeth being for selectively knurling or cutting grooves into the road;
- securing means to secure the operation element to the motorized vehicle in a vertically translatable manner; and - a block of concrete allowing to press the operation element against the asphalt of the road; and - a paint dispenser for distributing paint into the grooves.
to Advantageously, the present invention allows the paint to set at a level lower than the road itself, where it is not subjected to the eroding effect of passing traffic. It is also less likely to be damaged by harsh weather conditions and road keeping vehicles such as snow plows and street cleaners.
The present invention and its advantages will be better understood upon reading the following non restrictive description of a preferred embodiment thereof, with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Figure 7 is a top view of two case hardened steel wheels to trace two parallel road marking lines according to the present invention.
to DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION
The method according to the present invention a method for tracing a road marking line on a road essentially comprises two steps: knurling or cutting a set of parallel grooves in the road, defining the line that is requested, and distributing paint into these grooves. In this manner, the paint is protected from various erosion factors and the line is visible for a much longer period of time than for traditionally painted road lines.
Preferably, four grooves are traced. However, any other number could be used, provided that the resulting "line" looks like a conventional painted line.
Figure 1 illustrates the application of such a method. A motorized vehicle provided with an apparatus as the one described below circulates on the road the be marked and applies both steps of the above method in close succession.
Preferably, means are provided to simultaneously trace two parallel lines. As may be seen in figures 2 and 3, the result of the performing of the present method is a set of four parallel grooves in the road , which are partially filled with paint. The four grooves are disposed close enough together so that they will seem to form a single thick line to the eyes of a driver circulating on the road.
3 o The present invention also provides an apparatus 9 for tracing road marking lines, as shown in figures 4 to 7. This apparatus is preferably fixed to
4 a motorized vehicle 11, and according to a preferred embodiment comprises a vertically extending and translatable operation element 13. A block of concrete 14 is secured onto the rear portion of the platform of the vehicle 1 1, allowing the press operation element against the road. Preferably, the operation element 13 is connected to the motorized vehicle 1 1 through securing means which may comprise a hydraulic pressure cylinder 15, and least one pair 17 of support arms.
In the embodiment illustrated in figure 6, a second pair 19 of support arms is provided. A cylindrical case hardened wheel 21 is disposed at the lower extremity of the central element 13, and is rotational around horizontal axis 25.
1o Four radially extending teeth 27 are provided on the wheel surface, each tooth 27 forming a ring around the cylindrical wheel 21. The teeth 27 are preferably also made of case hardened steel. Finally, a paint dispenser 29 is fixed to the operation element 13, in such a manner as to allow paint to be spread into the path made by each teeth 27. As shown in figure 5, the paint dispenser 29 is supplied with paint from a paint reservoir 23 through a conduit 39.
In operation, the teeth 27 knurl or cut four parallel grooves into the road, which are then filled by paint from the paint dispenser 29. The vertical position of the operation element 13 may be adjusted by controlling means (not shown) 2o to be periodically lifted. This allows to trace a broken line when required.
Preferably, as shown in figure 7, the apparatus 9 comprises two operation elements 13a and 13b, each having a case hardened steel wheel 21 and a paint dispenser 29 attached thereto. Double lines may then be traced simultaneously.
The vertical position of each operation element is controlled independently, so the one or the other line may be broken.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention shown in figure 6, means to clean the street prior to the tracing of road lines are provided. These means may comprise a broom 31 fixed on the motorized vehicle 1 1 at a position in front of 3 o the apparatus 9, and a vacuum nozzle 33 following closely the broom 31 to remove the dirt collected thereby. If a cutting means 27 is used, another vacuum clears the dust after operation.
As also shown in figure 6, sensors may additionally be provided to analyse
5 the road surface to be cut and painted. The illustrated preferred embodiment comprises a temperature sensor 35, to determine the road temperature and adjust the pressure exercised by the teeth accordingly. A metal sensor 37 is also provided, so the presence of metallic surfaces may be detected in advance and the central element 13 temporarily raised to avoid damaging the teeth 27.
to In another preferred embodiment of the invention, shown in figure 6, an electromagnet 41 is provided inside the central element 13. The electromagnet 41 allows to give the central element 13 a vibratory movement, similar to that of a drill. This may facilitate the knurling of the grooves in the road, particularly in conditions wherein the road surface is hard to knurl. This electromagnet is not used with a cutter wheel.
Of course, numerous modifications could be made to the preferred embodiments disclosed hereinabove without departing from the scope of the 2 o invention as defined in the appended claims.
