The backpack is comprised of a plurality of end to end interconnected panels foldable about the point of interconnection and with a sheet fabric material extending between the side marginal edges to form the front and sides of the backpack. The upper portion of the backpack is foldable within a lower portion such that the pack may be converted between the full backpack configuration to a utility pack configuration designed to be worn around the waist of the user.

Description

CONVERTIBLE BACKPACK
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to backpacks and more particularly, relates to a convertible backpack which may be converted between a conventional type backpack and a more compact belt supported utility pack.
Over the years, there have been many proposals for various types of containers or packs which are attached to the body of the wearer and used for carrying articles.
As such, these carrying devices come in many different sizes and shapes ranging from relatively large backpacks used for hiking and camping through to the much smaller waist mounted utility packs which are frequently used to carry articles not conveniently carned elsewhere.
The conventional backpack, as aforementioned, has ranged from relatively large type units used for hiking and camping and which units generally have a rigid frame to the cloth or canvas type bag frequently used for general purposes by students and others.
Since any individual may require a carrying device for many different purposes, it would be desirable to have a device which is convertible between various uses.
As may be understood, conventional backpacks are relatively cumbersome and bulky and limit maneuverability and can tend to become uncomfortable. On the other hand, utility belts provide only a limited storage space.
In some situations, it is desirable to have a pack which is convertible into different sizes. Thus, for example, on an initial hiking or camping trip, a hiker might have a relatively large amount of food which requires a suitably sized backpack while towards the end of the hike, only a smaller pack is necessary.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a pack which can be transformed from one configuration to another.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a pack which can be converted between a substantially conventional larger backpack to a utility pack configuration.
It is a still further object of the present invention to provide a pack which is easily manufactured, relatively inexpensive and can be adjusted in size for the required purpose.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a convertible backpack comprising a plurality of end to end interconnected panels, each panel being foldable with respect to adjacent connected panels; the interconnecting panels forming a back portion of an upper backpack section and a lower backpack section; sheet fabric material attached to side marginal edges of at least some of the interconnected panels to thereby form a front portion and opposed side portions of the convertible backpack; the sheet fabric material being releasably attached to side marginal edges of the panels forming the lower section; the arrangement being such that the sheet material when detached from the panels of the lower section permit the panels forming the back portion of upper section to be folded within a reduced size backpack formed of the panels of the lower section.
According to a firrther aspect of the present invention, there is provided a convertible backpack comprised of a plurality of panels, each of the panels having end marginal edges and a pair of side marginal edges, the panels being interconnected at end marginal edges in an end to end configuration, the panels being foldable with respect to each other about the end marginal edges, the interconnecting panels forming a back portion of an upper backpack section and back, base and lower front portions of a lower backpack section, sheet fabric material attached to the side marginal edges of the interconnected panels to thereby form a front portion and opposed side portions of the convertible backpack, the sheet material being releasably attached to side marginal edges of the panels fornung the lower section, the arrangement being such that the sheet material when detached from the panels of the lower section permit the panels forming the back portion of the upper section to be folded within a reduced size backpack comprised of the panels forming the lower back portion, bottom portion and lower front portion.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
Refernng to the drawings in greater detail and by reference characters thereto, there is illustrated in Figures l, 2 and 4 a backpack in a fully expanded configuration and which is generally designated by reference numeral 10. Backpack 10 is comprised of a plurality of panels and reference will now be made to Figures 5 to 7 which illustrate the panels forming the backpack.

Initially, it will be understood that each of the panels may be formed in a conventional manner and would generally comprise an interior structural member having a fabric layer on either side thereof with the panels being separated by lines of stitching between the fabric layers. At the lines of stitching, the panels are foldable with respect to each other and reference herein will be made to such areas as fold lines.
Backpack 10 includes a back portion which is generally designated by reference numeral 12 and which back portion 12 is designed to lie against the back of the wearer.
Back portion 12 further includes an upper back panel 14 connected through a fold line 15 to a connecting back panel 16. A main back panel 18 is connected thereto by means of fold line 17 and finally, there is provided a rear access panel 20 which is foldable about fold line 19.
A fold line 21 extends between a relatively narrow transition panel 22 and a rear access panel 20 and similarly, a fold line 23 extends between transition panel 22 and a first bottom panel 24. A second bottom panel 26 has a fold line 25 intermediate itself and first bottom panel 24 with a second fold line 27 being intermediate second bottom panel 26 and a front panel 28. Finally, there is provided an upper front panel 30 with a fold line 29 extending between front panel 28 and upper front panel 30.
Thus, as may be seen from the above, there are provided a plurality of panels which are connected in an end to end configuration with the panels being foldable with respect to each other about end marginal edges.
Each panel also has a side marginal edge and for simplicity of description, reference numerals 32 and 34 will be used to designate the side marginal edges of all the panels as best seen in Figure 5.

In a preferred embodiment, the panels are sized to have a specific height (the distance between the end marginal edges). In this respect, preferably upper back panel 14 and first bottom panel 24 have a substantially identical height.
Connecting back panel 16 preferably has a height approximately two thirds that of the transition panel 22. Also, main back panel 18 preferably has a height substantially equal to the height of rear access panel 20.
Backpack 10 also includes a first side panel 36 connected to side marginal edge 32 of transition panel 19 and a second side panel 38 connected to rear access panel 20 along side marginal edge 34.
To complete the formation of the backpack, there is provided sheet fabric material which is generally designated by reference numeral 40 and which is attached to the panels to form an enclosure for articles to be carried in the backpack.
The arrangement of sheet fabric material 40 will be described in greater detail herein below.
Sheet fabric material 40 is formed so as to form a top portion 41 which is connected to the upper marginal edge of upper back panel 14 and with side portions 43 and 45 being secured to side marginal edges 32 and 34 respectively of upper back panel 14, connecting back panel 16 and main back panel 18. A front portion is comprised of a flap 39 which is secured by means of a zipper 8 along the front marginal edges of panels 41, 43 and 45. As may be seen in Figure 3, in an unzipped position, access may be had through flap 39 to the interior of the backpack.
Extending rearwardly from the backpack and more particularly extending between an upper marginal edge of upper back panel 14 and main back panel 18 are a pair of shoulder straps generally designated by reference numeral 42. Shoulder straps 42 are of a substantially conventional structure and need not be described herein.

A loop or strap 44 may also be provided for purposes of hanging backpack 10 on a suitable member. Hanging strap 44 may likewise extend from the upper marginal edge of upper back panel 14 and be secured thereto by suitable means such as stitching.
A waist strap 46 extends between side marginal edges 32 and 34 of rear access panel 20. Waist strap 46 may in itself provide storage by means of a pocket 49 secured by a zipper 47. As partially shown in Figure 4, there may be provided attachment buckles 48 on waist strap 46.
A pair of strap and buckles generally designated by reference numeral 50 are provided on the exterior surface of second bottom panel 26.
A side pocket 75 is located adjacent pocket 49.
Several hook and loop fastening strips may be utilized in conjunction with the backpack of the present invention. Such hook and loop fastening strips may be those such as are marketed under the trademark Velcro.
Specifically, there may be provided a first fastening strip 52 located at the upper marginal edge of upper front panel 30. A flap member 53 located on sheet fabric material 40 may likewise have a hook and loop fastener strip on an underside thereof. A similar hook and loop fastener strip 56 is provided on the interiorly facing surface of the lower marginal edge of main back panel 18. A further hook and loop fastener strip 54 is provided adjacent fold line 19 as may be seen in Figure 4 Various zippers are also utilized in the attachment of panels and sheet fabric material 40 and to this end, there is provided a first zipper 58 which joins sheet fabric material 40 along the side marginal edges 32 of second bottom panel 26, front panel 28 and upper panel 30. A second zipper 60 connects side panel 36 and sheet fabric material 40. A third zipper 62 is provided within rear access panel 20 connecting a flap 64 formed in rear access panel 20.
As shown in Figures 1 to 18, various configurations of the backpack 10 are possible. Thus, in the configuration illustrated in Figures 1 to 4, the backpack is in its full extended configuration to provide maximum storage space.
In a first reduced size arrangement, and as shown in Figures 6 to 11, upper front panel 30 may be folded inwardly with hook and loop fastener strips 52 and 54 being secured together to provide a reduced volume. As shown in Figure 9, upper panel 30 may be extended across the pack to form an interior divider dividing backpack 10 into upper and lower compartments.
In a fizrther embodiment, the volume of backpack 10 may be reduced to form a waist mounted utility pack. As shown in Figure 12, upper back panel 14, connecting back panel 16 and main back panel 18 may be folded downwardly with upper front panel 30, front panel 28 and second bottom panel 26 being folded to lie in juxtaposition to main back panel 18, connecting back panel 16 and upper back panel 14 respectively. The excess portion of sheet fabric material 40 may be folded inwardly therebetween as shown in Figure 14.
In an alternative arrangement, and as shown in Figures 16 to 18, upper back panel 14, connected to back panel 16 and main back panel 18 may be folded to lie in juxtaposition to first bottom panel 24, transition panel 22 and rear access panel 20 respectively. Again, the excess sheet fabric material 40 is placed therebetween. In this embodiment, since one may not have access through flap 64 in rear access panel 20, access is provided through upper front panel 30 and the zipper 8 provided thereon.
s As shown in Figure 15, the interior of the panels may be made of a "COROPLAST" material 86 or a foam material 87.
It will be understood that the above described embodiments are for purposes of illustration only and that changes and modifications may be made thereto without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
