Description

' CA 02232174 1998-03-16 FISHING ROD
This. invention relates to a fishing rod which is particularly but not exclusively designed for use in ice fishing.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
In ice fishing it is common for the fisherman to use more than one rod so as to maximize the chance of a successful catch. One or more rods are therefore left resting on the ice with the line and hook in the water waiting for a bite with the fisherman watching the rod but not directly holding and controlling the rod.
In the event of a bite, the fish can therefore apply a quick pull sufficient to pull the rod and line through the hole into the water where it is lost. It is also desirable to provide a flag system so that the fisherman watching the rod sometimes from a distance can quickly see when a bite has been made.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a fishing rod comprising;
an elongate rod having a handle at a base end;
a reel adjacent the handle;

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
A fishing rod 1, which is a long tube made of fibreglass, wood or any suitable material, is preferably shorter in length than a conventional fishing rod so to be more efficient for ice fishing. The rod 1 has a handle 3 at one end with a reel 5 mounted for actuation the line 7 in an in or out direction. The line 7 extends forwardly along the rod 1 and is threaded through the line guide 9 and the tip ring 9A.
The line guide ring 9 is positioned approximately halfway along the rod 1, used for guiding the line 7. Located at the further most end of the rod 1 is the tip ring 9A which guides the line 7.
The rod 1 includes a stand 11 which is positioned between the handle 3 and the line guide ring 9. The stand 11 enables the rod 1 to rest on the handle 3 and to lift the tip ring 9A off the ground or ice surface to allow the rod 1 to have sufficient bending action.
The stand 11 has legs 13A and 13B which extend sideways in a downward and forward direction. The legs 13A and 13B are attached to the cap 23, as best shown in Figure 4 and Figure 5 which will be later mentioned.
A flag 15 is mounted on a stem 17, of suitable flexible material, which extends down to the cap 23, where the stem 17 has a forward bend 19. The stem is then attached to the stand 11, as best shown in Figure 4 and Figure 5 and will be later mentioned.
The stem 17 can be bent to lift the flag 15 to the end of the rod 1, as best shown in Figure 3 and Figure 7 and will be later mentioned.
Located between the stand 11 and the line guide ring 9 is the line hole 25. The line latch 25, as best shown in Figure 6, comprises a suitably flexible bui: rigid material which is shaped to surround the rod 1. The line latch 25 has a loop 41 which allows the line 7 to be slipped into and holds the line 7 at a set length and set position.
In Figures 4 and Figure 5 the stand 11 comprises a cap 23 which is fixed to the rod 1 by a screw 29 which is attached to a washer 31 and tightened by a winged nut 33. The legs 13A and 13B are held by a second and third screw 27 and 27A. The legs 13A and 13B are shaped to surround the screws and the nut 37A
and 37B tightens and holds the legs 13A and 13B in place by holding the leg bends and 39B. To further hold the legs in position is the guide folds 35A and 35B.
The stem 17 is fixed around the underside of the cap 23, grasping on to the rear end on one side of the cap 23A and crossing over the rod 1 and grasping onto the front end on the second side of the cap 23B.
The flag comprises a rectangular flat piece of relatively stiff plastics material with two notches 21 A and 21 B in the rear edge facing the handle and two notches 21 C and 21 D in the side edge facing away from the rod. When the flag 15 is in the down or set position, as shown in Figure 3 and Figure 7, the end of the rod 1 is inserted into either notch 21 A or 21 B of the flag 15 depending upon the amount of force required to release the trigger. This holds the flag 15 down. The line 7 is then placed in either notch 21 C or 21 D again depending upon the amount of force required. When a fish bites, the line 7 which crosses at an angle across the flag will pull the flag 15 across the rod, releasing the line 11 and a rod 1 from the notch of the flag 15 allowing the flag to raise up, as shown in Figure 2. When the line 7 is pulled it will release the line 7 from the line latch 25 allowing the line to be pulled from thE; reel so that the reel can be used without the reel lock in place while providing enough tension to activate the trigger of the flag.
The legs of the stand are of sufficient width to prevent the rod from being pulled into a hole in the ice. Thus the legs are of a length measured across the tips of the legs which is greater than the diameter of the hole. In the event that the fish pulls vigorously after a bite the rod may be drawn into the hole but the legs will prevent the rod from being lost.
Since various modifications can be made in my invention as herein above described, and many apparently widely different embodiments of same made within the spirit and scope of the claims without department from such spirit and scope, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
