Abstract

A safety apparatus is provided for use with a climbing harness of the kind including a waist belt (16, figure 3) having a rope (15) secured to opposite sides of the belt and passing round a pole (17) being climbed. The apparatus comprises a metal bracket (11) extending between and holding the opposite sides of the rope (15) closer together than would be the case in the absence of the bracket so as to maintain a greater length of the rope in frictional engagement with the circumference of the pole. The bracket (11) is slidable towards or away from the pole and is biassed towards the pole (17) by an elastic cord (20) passing around the pole and attached to opposite ends of the bracket.

Description

CA 0222l304 l997-ll-l3 W O95/31251 PCT~E95/00028 Description Safet,v Apparatus for Climbing Harness i Technical Field S The present invention relates to a safety apparatus for use with a climbing h~rn~ss.

Background Art Telephone lines and power supply lines are mounted on the top of poles and pylons for carrying such lines cross-country. In order to fix the lines in position and to carry out repairs, people have to climb the poles usually using climbing irons strapped to their feet and a climbing or safety h~rn~ which comprises a waist belt with a rope which passes around the pole and is secured to the sides of the waist belt. The rope optionally passes through a sleeve which frictionally engages the pole. Such a climbing harness will hereinafter be described as a climbing h~ ss of the type described.

Many accidents occur using this climbing h~rn~ss res -1tin~ in the user falling from poles. This is due to the inability of the climbing h~ s.c to stop a user falling to the ground when friction ~t;Lweell the rope or sleeve and the pole is inadvelleuLly reduced for any reason.

Disclosure of the Invention According to the invention there is provided a safety ~aldlus for use with a climbing h~rn~s~ of the type described, comprising means for enp~ging a rope passing round a pole so as to m~int~in a greater length of the rope in frictional engagement with the cil.;ul,lfere.lce of the pole than in the absence of the eng~gin~ means.

By the term rope, we mean a hemp rope or a flat strap, for example, of synthetic material, or the like used in climbing apparatus.

W O95/31251 PCT~E95/00028 Brief Description of the Drawings An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
s Figure 1 is a perspective view of a safety apparatus according to the invention;

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the apparatus of Figure 1 in use with 10 a climbing h~rn~s~; and Figure 3 is a sch~m~tic view of the safety apparatus in use with a user.

15 Description of the Plert;lled Embodiment Referring now to the drawings wherein si ilar numerals have been used to inrlicate like parts, there is shown therein a safety apparatus generally in(lir~te-l at 10 according to the emb~imlont of the invention.
20 The apparatus 10 comprises a metal bracket 11 having an upturned flange 12 at each end 13, the flanges 12 defining curved rece~se~ 14 for slidably accommodating the opposite sides of the rope 15 (Figure 2) of a climbing harness 16 (Figure 3) worn by a user for climbing for example a telegraph pole 17.
The bracket 11 holds the opposite sides of the rope 15 closer together than would otherwise be the case, thereby m~inf~ining a greater length of the rope in frictional engagement with the circumfe~ellce of the pole.

The bracket 11 further has a respective lug 18,19 on the flanges 12.
An elastic shock cord 20 is anchored in the lug 18 and passes through a plastic sheath 21 and the unextended length of the cord 20 is adjustable by adjusting the position of a plastic ball 22 on the cord 20. The ball 22 engages the lug 19 to limit the length of cord 20 which is usable. A
plurality of flanges 23 are arranged on the underside of the bracket 11.

-As shown in Figure 2, the rope 15 of a clirnbing harness 16 engages in the recesses 14 under the flanges 12 so that as the bracket 11 is pushed towards the pole 17 a greater length of the rope 15 is caused to engage the J circumference of the pole 17. As shown the rope passes through a sleeve 24 which engages with the surface of the pole 17. Also, the cord 20 is used to position the bracket 11 on the rope 15, so that for ex~mple, if the usable length of the cord 20 is increased then the bracket 11 will slide away from the pole 17 slightly and thus the length of rope 15 which abuts the circumference of the pole will decrease. The cord 20 is thus in use always under positive tension to bias the bracket 11 towards the pole 17 and hold the bracket 11 in the correct position. Thus, the invention provides the important safety feature that it secures the rope 15 in position around a pole 17 and mi,.;".i~e~ the danger of a user accidentally falling from such a pole. If the user should fall or slip even slightly on the pole 17, the flanges 23 on the underside of the bracket 11, which are in the form of teeth, will engage or dig into the pole 17 to provide an added safety feature.

The invention thus provides an important safety device to provide added security to those working in industries where climbing such poles is nPcess~ry. The invention further enables the user ~lP~te freedom to work while safely secured to a pole.

As the unextended length of the cord 20 between the lugs 18, 19 is adjustable, the apparatus may be readily used with dirr~le.ll diameter poles.
