Description

Title: DELIVERY PROTECTION CONTAINER

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates generally to providing protection (eg.
from theft or damage from the weather) for items which are left unguarded outside a domicile, such as items which are delivered to a domicile when no one is available to receive the delivery or which are to be collected from a domicile when no one is available.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
As advances in technology have increasingly allowed people 10 to have home offices so that they perform their employment tasks from their place of residence, and as there has been an increase, generally, in residence-based businesses, there has been a corresponding increase in the use of courier delivery services to deliver items to residential premises.
Unlike a traditional place of business, however, it is not always possible at 1~ a residence to have a person present at the premises at the necessary time in order to safely receive the delivered item.
Furthermore, with the advent of computer and automated purchasing of household supplies for the home, there is also an increased use of delivery services to residential premises.
In some cases, such as senior citizens and women who work at home, it would be beneficial for personal security reasons to be able to receive delivered items at a premises without having to have direct contact with the delivery person. For example, senior citizens are often reluctant to open the door when a person unknown to them, such as a 2~ delivery person, arrives at the door.
Accordingly, there is a need for a security device into which a delivered item may be placed by a delivery person, and secured therein, and which will provide protection, eg. from theft and damage by weather, until it is subsequently removed therefrom by an authorized person. It is 30 also desirable to make such a device portable so that it may be stored inside :' CA 02220810 1997-11-13 the premises when not in use, and allow the device to be selectively used at various locations at the premises, or at various premises.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a receptacle for temporarily storing an item outside a domicile at a location where the public has access thereto comprising:
(a) a container having a closure panel, the panel moveable between an open position and a closed position, the closure panel sealing the container when in the closed position, the container being movable from a position within the domicile to a position exterior to the domicile where the public may have access thereto;
(b) a locking member moveable between a locked and an unlocked position for securing the closure panel in the closed 1~ position;
(c) a securing member capable of extending past a door or a window of the domicile when the door or window is closed, the securing member having a first end attached to the container and a second end; and, (d) an anchor positionable within the domicile and incapable of exiting the door or window is closed, the second end of the securing member being affixed to the anchor, wherein the container is positionable exterior to the domicile with the locking member in the unlocked position and the anchor is 2~ positionable inwardly of the domicile with the securing member extending therebetween past the closed door or window such that an object may be placed in the container, the closure panel may be closed and the locking member may be placed in the locked position.
The container may be made of a fabric material such that the container may be collapsed for storage when not in use. Further, the container may be made of a waterproof material.

In another embodiment, the anchor may be sized so as not to be able to pass by the door or window when the door or window is closed.
In another embodiment, the anchor may be removable fixedly attachable to a surface within the domicile. In another embodiment, the anchor may be fixedly attached to a surface within the domicile.
In accordance with the present invention, there is also provided a method of temporarily storing an item outside a domicile at a location where the public has access thereto comprising:
(a) providing a container having a closure panel moveable between an open position and a closed position and a locking member moveable between a locked and an unlocked 1~ position for selectively providing access to the container, the container having an anchor attached thereto by a securing member, the an anchor incapable of exiting past a door or window of the domicile when the door or window is closed, the securing member being capable of extending past the door or window when the door or window is closed;
(b) positioning the container exterior of the domicile at a position where a member of the public may have access to the container;
(c) positioning the anchor interior of the domicile with the 2~ securing member extending past the door or window; and, (d) closing the door or window.
In use, the container may be positioned exterior to the domicile with the securing member in the unlocked position for receiving a package whereby the person who delivers a package can place the package in the container, move the closure panel to the closed positioned and then move the locking member to the locked position.
According to an alternate use, the container may be positioned exterior to the domicile with a package therein whereby the person who collects the package can move the closure panel to the open position and then remove the package from the container.
According to a further alternate use, the container may be 5 positioned exterior to the domicile with a package therein and the locking member in the locked position whereby the authorized person who collects the package can move the locking member to the unlocked position, move the closure panel to the open position and then remove the package from the container.
In one embodiment, the anchor is removable fixedly attachable to a surface within the domicile and the method further comprises the step of attaching the anchor to the surface.

DETAII ED DESCRIPIION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
Referring now to Figure 1, a delivery pro~ection bag in accordance with the present invention is shown generally at 10. Delivery 30 protection bag 10 has a container 12, having a closure member 14 to provide access to the interior of container 12, a locking member 16, a securing member 18 and an anchor 20. Container 12 is preferably provided with handles 24 for convenient carrying of bag 10 when it is desired to , move bag 10 into the domicile, or elsewhere, for storage.
Container 12 is preferably large enough to receive several packages which may be of varying size. For example, a size of 36" x 18" x 18" is preferred, but any convenient size may be used. The actual size will vary depending on the volume of packages that container 12 may have to store. Container 12 may be formed from a variety of materials. Preferably, container 12 is manufactured so as to be collapsible for storage. For example, if container 12 is made of a fabric material, it may be folded or rolled up into a compact volume to reduce the storage space required when it is not in use. More preferably, container 12 is made from a weather resistant fabric material (eg a plastic or nylon material) to protect the contents from rain and other environmental moisture. Container 12 may also be made of a cut-resistant material, such as KEVLARTM or similar material, to prevent unauthorized personnel from accessing the packages in container 12 by cutting or otherwise damaging container 12.
Closure member 14 is sealable so that unauthorized personnel may not access the interior of container 12. For example, container 12 may be made from a fabric material with side walls 15 and closure member 14 defining a top flap. In this embodiment, fastener 22 may be affixed to closure member 14 and side walls 15 to define a continuous seal between closure member 14 and side walls 15. Fastener Z2 is preferably a sliding fastener, such as a zipper, but other typical continuous or discontinuous sealing members may also be used.
Fastener 22 is provided to keep container 12 closed and locking member 16 selectively locks fastener 22 in the closed position, protecting the contents from both environmental damage and unwanted access by others.
Locking member 16 may be of any construction known in the art. As shown in Figure 2, fastener 22 comprises a zipper and locking member 16 comprises securing ring 26, lock 28 and slide ring 30. Slide ring 30 is attached to slide 32 of the zipper. Slide ring 30 may also serve as a tab for moving slide 32, to open and close fastener 22. A lock 28 passes through securing ring 26 and slide ring 30, lockably fixing slide 32 of fastener 22 in the closed position and thereby impeding unauthorized access to container 12. Lock 28 may be any commercially available padlock or combination lock.
Alternatively, as shown in Figure 4, locking member 16 may be a self-locking zipper such as those marketed by the Y.K.K. Corporation.
10 In Figure 4, self-locking slide fastener 22 is shown generally at 50. Self-locking fastener 50 has slide 52. Slide 52 has longitudinally extending member 54 extending forwardly therefrom and has teeth 56 provided thereon. Self-locking slide fastener 50 also has locking catch 58 having an opening 60 provided therein and is operably by means of key 62. Locking 15 catch 60 lockably retains, in any fashion known in the art, longitudinally extending member 54 therein, when slide 52 is positioned to fully close self-locking fastener 50. PrereLably, self locking zipper automatically locks when the zipper is moved to the closed position. To unlock, key 62 is inserted into catch 58, and typically rotated or tumed therein, causing catch 20 58 to release teeth 56. Once released, longitudinally extending member 54 may be moved to open fastener 50.
Securing member 18 secures container 12 to anchor 20.
Anchor 20 is pos*ionable within the domicile (such as a house, apartment, factory or the like) and is incapable of being removed from the domicile 25 without opening the door, window or the like of the domicile. For example, as shown in Figure 1, anchor 20 is positioned behind a closed door D to prevent a person outside door D from removing bag 10 from its position outside door D.
Securing member 18 is made of a material which is 30 sufficiently thin so that it may pass between a closed door and the doorjamb or between a closed window and the window housing. As shown in figure 1, securing member 18 passes under door D while door D

is closed.
Securing member 18 is preferably made of a material which, for security reasons, is resistant to breakage or severing thereof, such as by cutting or the like. For example, securing member 18 may be a 1/8"
5 diameter woven steel cable. Alternatively, a fabric strap material, such as is used in automotive seat belts, may be used. While such materials may be cut or severed, house breaking tools are generally required to break or cut such materials, thereby discouraging theft.
Securing member 18 may be affixed to container 12 by any 10 conventional means. It is preferable that a secure, tamper-resistant connection is made. Referring to Figure 2, securing member 18 may be affixed to container 12 via securing ring 26, which is stitched to container 12. The use of a securing ring 26 has the added of advantage of forming part of locking member 16. If a fabric strap securing member 18 is used 15 (not shown), securing member 18 may be stitched or stapled directly to container 12.
Referring to Figure 3, anchor 20 is provided to discourage the removal of delivery protection bag 10 from the premises. By positioning anchor 20 within the domicile in a manner by which it may not be 20 removed from the domicile, theft of container 12 is discouraged.
Anchor 20 may be of a variety of constructions provided it will be retained in the domicile when the door, window or the like of the domicile through which securing member 18 passes is closed. Accordingly, anchor 20 may be sized so that is will not exit the domicile when the exit 25 through which securing member 18 passes is closed. In a preferred embodiment, securing member 18 passes under door D and anchor 20 is sized so that, when door D is closed, anchor 20 cannot pass under, or otherwise by door D. Anchor 20 may accordingly be of any shape such as a 2" x 4" x 6" hardwood block, as shown in Figure 3, where bag 10 is shown 30 in use with a typical residential exterior hinged door. The use of hardwood is preferred because of its strength in resisting breakage, and because of the relative ease with which it may be machined. It will be apparent, however, that any suitable anchor 20 design and material (eg wood, metal or plastic) may be used.
Alternately, anchor 20 may be removably fixedly attached to a surface in the domicile (eg. a wall or the floor). For example, as shown in 5 Figure 5, bracket 64 may be mounted on a wall near door D. Bracket 64 is provided with a means for receiving anchor 20. Bracket 64 is designed to securely hold anchor 20 therein. The exact configuration of bracket 64 will vary depending upon the shape of anchor 20. As shown in Figure 5, bracket 64 has a vertically extending slot provided therein and anchor 20 10 has a mating cylindrical shape so that anchor 20 may be slidably received in bracket 20.
Alternately, anchor 20 may be fixedly attached to a surface in the domicile (eg. a wall or the floor). For example, anchor 20 may itself be secured to a wall near door D by means of a screw or the like. This 15 embodiment is less preLerled since bag 10 can not easily be stored out of sight when it is not in use.
Securing member 18 is securely fixed to anchor 20 by any method. Preferably the connection is of sufficient strength to withstand a person of larger than average size pulling on securing member 18 from a 20 position outside closed door D. For example, re~elling to Figure 3, securing member 18 passes through a hole 34 in anchor 20. Stop 36 is affixed to the end of securing member 18 distal to container 12. The exact method of attachment which is used may vary. For example, a fixed loop (not shown) may be formed in the end of securing member 18,by folding the end of 25 securing member back upon itself and stitching such a loop, the loop preferably being sized so that anchor 20 may be inserted snugly therewithin. Stop 36 may be a pin having a length greater than the diameter of hole 34 and oriented approximately diametrically across hole 34 so as to abut against side 35 of anchor 20. Alternately, stop 36 may be 30 permanently affixed to anchor 20. For example, securing member may be formed integrally with anchor 20, securing member may be affixed to anchor 20 by means of glue, nails, screws or, if securing member 18 and _9_ anchor 20 are made of metal, welding.
Referring again to Figure 1, in use container 12 of delivery protection bag 10 is placed outside a door D, and securing member 18 is laid across the threshoId T of door D, such that anchor 20 is inside the domicile. Door D is then closed and, typically, locked. Locking member 16 is left in the unlocked position. A courier delivery person, attending at the premises for the purpose of delivering an item thereto, may undo fastener 22 and open closure panel 14 so that they can place the item inside container 12. The delivery person can then re-close fastener 22 and secure 10 the item in container 12 by closing locking member 16. It is ~re~rable that the delivery person be instructed, either in advance or by contemporaneous written instructions, to follow the delivery procedure described herein. The delivery person may then leave the premises to continue his or her duties. The recipient may then, at their leisure, unlock 15 and open container 12 to retrieve the delivered item.
Delivery protection bag 10 can also be used to leave items to be picked by authorized persons. For example, container 12 may be positioned as shown in Figure 1 with an item for collection placed therein.
Preferably, locking member 16 is placed in the locked position for security 20 reasons. The person who has to attend at the domicile to collect the item in container 12 may do so at their leisure without having to coordinate their attendance with the occupant. If container 12 is locked, they can unlock locking member 16 and retrieve the item therein. At the same time, the may also deliver a package thereto.
When not in use, delivery protection bag 10 may be carried by handles 24 to a convenient storage location until it is needed again.
Although the preferred embodiment is described for use in conjunction with a door D, wherein securing member 18 passes under door D, it is understood that delivery bag 10 may be used in conjunction 30 with any closable opening in a building or residence. For example, delivery bag 10 could be used in conjunction with a window or overhead garage door. Equally, it is not necessary that securing member 16 pass under door D. What is desired is that anchor 20 is positionable within the domicile to impede unauthorized removal of delivery protection bag 10.
While the above description constitutes the preferred embodiments, it will be appreciated that the present invention is 5 susceptible to modification and change without parting from the fair meaning of the proper scope of the accompanying claims.
