Abstract

A sports glove, such as a single hand golf glove, with a backhand portion and a forehand portion. The backhand and the upper surface of the fingers and/or the thumb are formed of UV permeable mesh material. The forehand portion is formed of a conventional dense material, such as leather or imitation leather.

Description

. . CA 02219612 1997-10-27 , SPORTS GLOVE

Background of the Invention:
Field of the Invention:
The invention relates to sports gloves, and in particular to outdoor sports gloves such as single-hand golf gloves, baseball batting gloves, bicycle gloves, and the like.

In golf, for instance, the golfer usually wears a sin~le glove. Right-handed golfers wear the glove on the left hand and left-handed golfers wear the glove on the right hand.
Conventional golf gloves are formed of leather and they are closed with a strap on the back of the hand. The strap is usually a hook and loop type closure, such as a VELCRC~
strap. The strap may serve to carry trademarks and/or club symbols. Furthermore, a marker button is removably attached on the backhand (the marker button is used to indicate the position on the green from ~Ihich the ball has been picked up so as to allow the partner(s) to putt their balls). The golf glove may optionally be formed with air openings at the finger and thumb areas.

A golf glove with mesh lining is disclosed in U.S. Patent No.

5,390,372 to Hashimoto et al., wherein a mesh-cloth is mounted inside of the glove body so as to be in contact with . CA 02219612 1997-10-27 the palm of the hand and the gripping surfaces of the fingers. The glove body, i.e. the outer skin of the glove, is made of leather. The bac:khand of the glove body is conventionally made of leather and it is therefore not W
permeable.

United States Patent No. 4,~89,444 to Graham discloses a golf glove with a golf ball marker holder. The marker holder is disposed on the wrist, at the rear of the backhand portion of the glove.

Due to the fact that a conventional golf glove is not permeable to the W radiation of sunlight, the hand on which the golf glove is carried is not tanned, while the other hand receives a tan from the exposure to the sun. This results in a skin-tone difference at the hand surfaces, which is often found disturbing.

In the case of baseball, for instance, it is not the skin tone difference between the hands which may be disturbing, but the fact that neither hand is tanned. The skin tcne difference is thus between t:he forearms and the hands. The baseball batting glove is similar to the golf glove, in that it is formed of leather or imitation leather and it is tightened with a hook and loop closure flap. Instead of a marker button, some wrist s]eeves of baseball batting gloves . . CA 02219612 1997-10-27 , have been recently provided with a supply of rosin (Tc~pit, Inc. of Fort Lauderdale, FL).

Summary of the Invention:
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provicLe a sports glove, which overcomes the above-mentioned disadvantages of the heretoiore-known devices of this general type and which allows the bcickhand to receive a tan even while the glove is being worn.

With the foregoing and other objects in view there is provided, in accordance with the invention, an improved sports glove of the type having a backhand portion substantially covering a back of a hand wearing the glove, and a forehand portion contiguous with the backhand portion.
The improvement resides in the fact that the backhand portion is formed of W radiation permeable material, such as mesh material.

In accordance with-an added feature of the invention, he upper fabric covering the fingers and/or the thumb, wh:Lch are contiguous with the backhand portion, are W permeable as well.

In other words, the backhand portion of the glove, inc]uding the upper side of the finger, and/or the thumb, is formed of a W permeable mesh material. The forehand of the glove may be formed of leather or of cmy another conventional dense material, such as for instance artificial leather or so-called "all-weather".

When the glove according to the invention is worn during play in the sun then the hand on which the glove is worn is tanned equally with other exposed skin surfaces.

Due to the fact that in accordance with the invention the lo entire backhand surface, if possible, is formed of a mesh-shaped, W light permeable material, a different placement from the conventional placement of the closure flap is suitable. In accordance with a further feature of the invention, therefore, the closure flap - with a usual hook and loop closure - is preferably disposed at the underside of the glove at the wrist.

The removable marker button (for marking the position of a golf ball on the green) is also disposed at a different location from the-prior art, namely at the underside of the glove in the area of the ball of the thumb. This placement, incidentally, is also ergonomically better than the prior art placement on the top of the glove in the wrist area in that it is no longer necessary to turn and twist the hand so as to allow for the removal or reattachment of the marker button.

~ CA 02219612 1997-10-27 Other features which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in l_he appended claims.

Although the invention is i:Llustrated and described herein as embodied in a sports glove, it is nevertheless not int.ended to be limited to the detail-, shown, since various modifications and structura:L changes may be made therein without departing from the ~,pirit of the invention anc' within the scope and range of equivalents of the claims.

The construction and method of operation of the invent.ion, however, together with addilional objects and advantages thereof will be best underslood from the following description of a specific embodiment when read in conn.ection with the accompanying drawing.

Brief Description of the Drc~wing:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a backhand portion of a sports glove according to the invention; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the forehand portion of a golf glove in accordance with the invention.

Description of the Preferre(~ Embodiments:

Referring now to the figures of the drawing in detail and first, particularly, to Fig. 1 thereof, there is seen a backhand (top) portion 1 of a novel sports glove. The entire ~ - CA 02219612 1997-10-27 WI~ 7585 backhand portion 1, including the top of the finger and thumb area, is formed of W-permeable material, such as fmesh material. Such material is commercially available (fcr instance from the firm Elastic Wirkwaren GmbH of Neukirchen, Germany). While only parts of the backhand are symbolically drawn are being meshed, it should be understood that, in the spirit of the invention, the entire top surface is formed of mesh material 1. The netting allows the tanning W radiation to permeate through the glove and thus tan the skin on the back of the hand. The nett:ing material may advantageously be a textile fabric, e.g. artiEicial knitwear or knitted material, particularly from synthetic fibers. In a current best mode embodiment, the f:ibers consist partially of elastic fibers, such as 25% Elastan fiber. The rest (75%) may be polyamide fibers. This ensures that the material at t:he backhand of the glove is el~stic. Due to the mesh structure, it furthermore allows breathing. Where synthetic material is used it is also guaranteed -that the quality of the glove does not suffer upon getting wet. Finally, the mesh top surface material of the glove is enabled for display imprint.

Referring now to Fig. 2, th~e forehand portion 2 of glove, including the bottom of the fingers and the thumb, is formed of dense material 2, such as leather or artificial leather.
Dense and water impermeable material, which is nevertheless able to breath, may be used (so-called "all weather material").

A closure flap 3 is disposecl at the bottom of the glove in the area of the wrist and it: operates with the aid of a conventional clasp closure such as a hook and loop fastener.

The forehand of the glove i]lustrated in Fig. 2 is a golf glove. In that regard, a removable marker button 4 is attached to the bottom of the glove, in the vicinity cf the ball of the thumb. It is thus no longer necessary to turn lo the hand over for the purpose of removing the marker ~utton.

The sports glove according t:o the invention provides for two large surfaces for advertising: first, the closure flap 3 can carry advertising imprints and symbols and, second, advertisements may be applied at the backhand surface on the W-permeable mesh material.

While Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate a left-hand sports glove, it will be understood that the right-hand glove is a mirror-symmetrical copy o-f the illustrated glove. In the case of the golf glove, the right-hand glove need not be provided with a marker button, as a single marker will suffice.

The term W permeable is del-ined as being permeable tc a substantial portion of the 1~ spectrum and to such a degree as to result in tanning which is comparable to tanning when the bare skin is exposed.
