Abstract

A latch for a wire gate includes a frame defining a post confining enclosure. The frame is clamped to a fixed fence post in a substantially horizontal orientation. One of the sides of the frame is pivots about a substantially vertical axis. A spring biases the pivotally mounted side toward a closed position against the frame. A guide channel is provided for directing a movable fence post between the pivotally mounted side and the frame. The latch, as described above, enables a person to close a gate with one hand by pushing a movable fence post into the guide channel. As the post passes along the guide channel, the biasing force of the spring is overcome sufficiently to move the pivotally mounted side to an open position and allow entry of the post into the post confining enclosure.
