Abstract
A sport fishing flasher includes a first body and a second body. The first body has a female receptacle. The second body has a male member. The male member is received in the female receptacle in friction fit relation, detachably coupling the first body and the second body. A fishing line is secured to the second body. A force exerted by a fish hooked on a hook attached to the fishing line results in the second body detaching from the first body.
Description
TITLE OF THE lNV~NLlON:
Sport fishing flasher NAME OF lNVI''N'l'OR:
Chester Quaife FIELD OF THE lNV~NllON
The present invention relates to a flasher used by fishermen when sport fishing.
BACK~ROUND OF THE lNV~NllON
A flasher is an apparatus used by salt water sport fishermen to attract fish. It consists of an elongate planar body which is attached to a fishing line adjacent to a hook.
The movement of the flasher through the water is intended to simulate the movement and appearance of a small school of fish.
Unfortunately, once a fish attracted by the flasher is on the hook, the flasher ceases to play a useful role. The continued presence of the flasher on the fishing line after the fish has been hooked is actually detrimental. A fish once hooked will try to run and will make a series of evasive manoeuvres in an attempt to get away. The additional drag caused by the flasher hampers the evasive manoeuvres of the fish and leads to the fish rapidly becoming exhausted. This shortens the time duration during which the sport fisherman can exercise his skills. The fish may also be struck by the flasher as it attempts to make evasive manoeuvres. This which damages trophy fish and further diminishes the fighting ability of the fish.
It has long been recognized that the ultimate solution to the problem is to develop a flasher that will be released from the line once the fish is on the hook.
SUMMARY OF THE lNV~N-LION
What is required is a flasher that will release from the line once the fish is on the hook According to the present invention there is provided a sport fishing flasher which includes a first body and a second body. The first body has one of a male member and a female receptacle. The second body has a complementary mating one of the male member and the female receptacle. The male member is received in the female receptacle in friction fit relation, detachably coupling the first body and the second body. Means is provided for securing a fishing line to the second body.
A force exerted by a fish hooked on a hook attached to the fishing line results in the second body detaching from the first body.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
These and other features of the invention will become more apparent from the following description in which reference is made to the appended drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a partially cut away perspective view of a sport fishing flasher in accordance with the teachings of the present invention.
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of a second body having a male member.
The preferred embodiment, a sport fishing flasher generally identified by reference numeral 10, will now be described with reference to FIGURES 1 and 2.
Referring to FIGURE 1, flasher 10 has a first body 12 and a second body 14. First body 12 is elongate. It has opposed faces 16, opposed ends 18 and 20 and opposed sides 22. A
female receptacle 24 is positioned at opposed end 18.
Transverse obtuse bends 26 extend between opposed sides 22 adjacent each of opposed ends 18 and 20. An aperture 28 is positioned at opposed end 20 as means for attaching a recovery line 30 to first body 12.
Referring to FIGURE 2, second body 14 has an integrally formed male member 32. Male member 32 has a plurality of external vanes 34. An aperture 36 is provided through second body 14 which serves as means for securing a fishing line 38 to second body 14.
The use and operation of sport fishing flasher 10 will now be described with reference to FIGURES 1 and 2. Referring to FIGURE 1, male member 32 of second body 14 is received in female receptacle 24 of first body 12 in friction fit relation.
This enables second body 14 to detach from first body 12 when subjected to a force which overcomes the friction holding male member 32 within female receptacle 24. Vanes 34 enhance the holding ability of males member 32. When a force is exerted by a fish being hooked on a hook (not shown) attached to fishing line 38, second body 14 detaches from first body 12.
Referring to FIGURE 2, the preferred manner of securing fishing line 38 is by extending fishing line 38 through a loop 40 and then wrapping fishing line 38 around male member 32 prior to insertion into female receptacle 24. As a result of wrapping fishing line 38 around male member 32, a tug on fishing line 38 pulls male member 32 out of female receptacle 24. Loop 40 prevents the loss of second body 14. Fishing line 38 iS freely passes through loop 40 and does not impede the fighting capability of the fish.
It will be apparent to one skilled in the art that modifications may be made to the illustrated embodiment without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined in the Claims.
