Abstract

It was found, surprisingly, that the undesirable mucilaginous precipitates on the resin filter are not formed whenever the anion exchangers used for the water treatment are doped with at least one platinum group metal.

Claims (6)

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. A method for breaking down an oxidizing substance in an aqueous fluid stream in the absence of added reductant, comprising contacting the fluid stream with at least one platinum metal on an anion exchanger acting as a support.
2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the platinum metal is selected from the metals platinum and palladium.
3. A method according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the support is a strongly basic anion exchanger in the OH form or a weakly basic anion exchanger in the free base form.
4. A method according to claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the support is a gelatinous anion exchanger.
5. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the support contains the platinum metal in an amount of from 0.3 to 10 g per litre of anion exchanger.
6. Method according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the fluid stream is in a cooling medium of a power station or in an ultrapure water plant.
