Abstract

A method of removing jointed tubing from a well, wherein rod is encased within the jointed tubing. The method comprises the steps of a) removing a first length of tubing from the well; b) unscrewing the first length of tubing from the next length of tubing with power tongs; c) lifting the first length of tubing clear of the power tongs; d) gripping the rod with the power tongs at a first position; e) holding the rod at a second position against rotational movement; f) torquing the rod with the power tongs until failure of the rod to sever a portion of the rod; g) removing the first length of tubing and the severed portion of the rod; and h) repeating steps a-g with the next length of jointed tubing being the first length of jointed tubing until a desired length of the jointed tubing is removed. The rod may be a flattened rod with first and second widths. In this instance, it is preferred that the rod be gripped, at both gripping positions, by cylindrical inserts each having a slot whose width is intermediate the first and second widths. A flange is preferably providedon the cylindrical inserts to prevent the inserts sliding away from the gripping positions.
