Abstract

To suspend electrical or communication cables along an aerial steel messenger wire, it is known to use cable suspension assemblies. With this invention, it may be possible to substantially increase the load holding capacity of the cable suspension assembly and carry out multiple consequent installations of cables or cable bundles on the same cable suspension assembly.

SPECIFICATION

This invention relates to aerial installation of electrical and/or communication cables where a cable or a cable bundle is suspended underneath a steel messenger wire by means of a "hook and strap" assembly.

The previously known hook and strap assembly shown in Figure 7 comprises a metal hook 1, a hanger lashing strap (or a cable tie) 2, and a special device called mounting head 3. The hook 1 may be placed on the messenger wire, and the hanger lashing strap (or a cable tie) 2 may be wrapped around the cable or cable bundle and secured in the mounting head 3.

Aaron Zak 27 Sylvester Court, Thornhill, ON L4J 5R1 Tel. (905) 889-7797 The key component in the previously known hook and strap assembly further shown in Figure 8 is the mounting head 3, which facilitates the attachment of the lashing strap 2 to the metal hook 1 and locking of the lashing strap 2 The hook and strap assembly is assembled by inserting the messenger hook 1 into a recess in the plastic mounting head 3. The hanger lashing strap (or the cable tie) 2 must be also inserted into the same recess in the plastic mounting head 3 to prevent the metal hook 1 from sliding out of the recess in the plastic mounting head 3.

Thus, the previously known hook and strap assembly may have the following disadvantages:

The metal hook 1 in Figure 8 slips out of the mounting head 2 under the tension of the cable load and therefore limits the loading capacity of the hook and strap assembly.

The assembly is designed for one installation of cables or cable bundles. After the initial installation is completed, subsequent installations of additional cables or cable bundles on the same hook & strap assembly shown in Figure 7 may be difficult or impossible, since it would require releasing the hanger lashing strap 2 in the mounting head 3, re-lashing the hanger lashing strap 2 around the additional cables or cable bundles, bringing the hanger lashing strap 2 back to the mounting head 3, and re-securing the hanger lashing strap 2 in the mounting head 3.

I have found that these disadvantages may be overcome by using the proposed cabie suspension assembly which dispenses with the mounting head used in the previously known assembly and instead utilizes commercially available lashing strap gripping devices called locking heads to facilitate the attachment of the lashing strap to a specially designed "C" shaped metal messenger hook as well as the locking of the cables in the cable suspension assembly.

The proposed cable suspension assembly shown in Figure 1 may consist of a "C"
shaped metal messenger hook 1, a lashing strap of a desired length 2, and a number of identical locking heads 3 & 3a.

The bottom part of the messenger hook (Figure 1, pos. 1 and Figure 2) may be shaped and recessed to hold and support the locking head (Figure 1, pos. 3a) which in turn holds and supports the lashing strap 2.

The locking head (Figure 6) contains a metal pawl which allows only one way movement of the lashing strap inside the locking head.

The cable suspension assembly may be constructed as follows:

Aaron Zak 27 Sylvester Court, Thornhill, ON L4J 5R1 Tel. (905) 889-7797 3 Figure 3: The lashing strap is cut to a desired length. The two ends of the lashing strap 2 may be inserted into the locking head 3a and pulled through evenly, so that the two halves of the lashing strap 2 may have approximately equal lengths.

Figure 4: the lashing strap 2, with the locking head 3a attached to it, may be inserted through the recess in the bottom lip of the "C" shaped messenger hook 1, so that the locking head 3a is resting on the bottom lip of the messenger hook 1 and the two halves of the lashing strap 2 extend out of the messenger hook 1.

A cable or a cable bundle may be suspended underneath a messenger wire as follows:

The "C" shaped metal messenger hook of the cable suspension assembly shown in Figure 5 may be hanged on the steel messenger wire. A cable or a cable bundle being installed may be placed between the two halves of the lashing strap 2. The two ends of the lashing strap 2 may be inserted into another locking head 3. The looking head 3 may be pulled up underneath the cable or the cable bundle to the required tightness.
The cable or the cable bundle may remain locked in the cable installation assembly.

As shown in Figure 1, additional cables or cable bundles may be consecutively installed on the same lashing strap 2 using additional locking heads 3.

Aaron Zak 27 Sylvester Court, Thornhill, ON L4J 5R1 Tel. (905) 889-7797 4 2190~36 The proposed suspension assembly may substantially increase the permissible cable load, and may allow for subsequent installations of additional cables or cable bundles on the same cable suspension assembly without having to re-lash the strap. The number of cables or cable bundles which can be consequently installed on a single assembly may only be limited by the length of the plastic strap and the maximum loading capacity of the assembly.

Figure 1 illustrates the embodiment of the general view of the invention - the cable suspension assembly, which allows multiple consecutive installations of cables or cable bundles.

Figure 2 illustrates the "C" shaped Messenger Hook with recessed lower lip.

Figure 3 illustrates the first step of putting together the cable suspension assembly by inserting the required length of the lashing strap 2 into the locking head 3a.

Figure 4 illustrates the insertion of the lashing strap 2, with the locking head 3a attached, into the messenger hook 1.

Figure 5 illustrates fastening a cable or a cable bundle to the cable suspension assembly by means of inserting the locking Head 3 onto the lashing strap 2 underneath the cable or the cable bundle.

Aaron Zak 27 Sylvester Court, Thornhill, ON L4J 5R1 Tel. (905) 889-7797 5 2190~36 Figure 6 illustrates the locking head 3 with inserted lashing strap 2. The locking head comprises an internal steel pawl which allows only the one way movement of the lashing strap 2 in the locking head 3.

Figure 7 illustrates the embodiment of the previously known messenger hook and strap assembly where the mounting head 3 facilitates the attachment of the hanger lashing strap or a cable tie 2 to the messenger hook 1.

Drawing 8 illustrates the engagement of the messenger hook 1 in the mounting head 3 in the previously known hook and strap assembly.
