- DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
As shown ln Flgure l, a hand cart 10 provldes a convenlent arrangement for recelvlng and transportlng two contalners such as standard slzed blns for household or llke garbage and a number of boxes or trays 12 for recelvlng recyclable materlals. The cart 11 comprlses an open slded frame comprlslng a large lower compartment 13 of a slze to comfortably accommodate a palr of household garbage blns one of whlch 16 lllustrated ~t 14.
The hand cart 10 18 fabrlcated ln releasably lnterconnected sectlons whlch can be taken apart and stacked together for shlpplng and ~torage ln whlch condltlon they occupy very much less volume than ln the erected condltlon as '`
shown ln Flgure 1. As seen ln Flgures 2 and 3, the hand cart frame has sectlons that are fabrlcated out of rectangular sectloned welded hollow tubular steel parts, the baslc components belng descrlbed ln the followlng,-(a) A horlzontal base frame 16 has a rectangularperlmeter frame the longltudlnal members 18 of whlch are spanned by spaced parallel cross members 17.
~ b) A vertlcally arranged flat front frame 20 has vertlcal legs 21 whlch are spanned by upper and lower horlzontal cross members 22 and 23 respectlvely. The lower cross member 23 18 allgned wlth the end cross member 17 of the base frame, the two frames belng lnterconnected at thls locatlon by fasteners ln the form of threaded bolts 24 passlng through allgned holes ln the members 17 and 23. The vertlcal legs termlnate ln feet 25 whlch extend below the base frame 16.
(c) At the opposlte rear end of the base frame there 18 a vertlcally arranged rear frame 30 havlng vertlcal legs 31 lnterconnected by upper and lower cross members 32, 33, the lower cross member belng securely flxed agalnst the rear cross member 17 of the base frame by removable bolts 24.
The rear frame 30 lncludes at lts upper end a rearwardly pro~ectlng horlzontal rectangular handle frame 34 comprlslng slde members 35 ~olned at the rear ends by a cross plece 36.
(d) A horlzontal top frame 40 comprlses a longltudlnal frame member 41 extendlng along one slde, and a further longltudlnal frame member 42 extendlng along the opposlte slde, the member 41 belng at the same level as the upper cross members 22 and 32, whereas the other longltudlnal member 42 18 posltloned at a lower level. The frame members 41 and 42 are lnterconnected by a serles of L-shaped members to constltute the frame 40, there belng lntermedlate L-shaped members 43 as well as a front L-shaped member 44 and a rear L-shaped member 45, the members 43, 44 and 45 belng substantlally unlformly spaced apart and each extendlng ln a generally vertlcal plane to provlde compartments 47, 48, 49 havlng open tops deflned by the longltudlnal frame member 41 and the horlzontal portlon of the L-shaped frame members, and open lateral sldes deflned by the longltudlnal member 42 and the vertlcal portlons of the L-~hape members 43, 44, 45.
At opposlte ends of the longltudlnal member 41 the top frame 40 lncludes a short vertlcal leg 50, and the opposlte ends of the top frame are flxedly ~ecured to the front and rear frames by bolts 24 pass through allgned apertures ln the frame members. Speclflcally bolts 24 pass through the horlzontal portlons of the front and rear L-shape frame members 44 and 45 lnto the assoclated upper cross members 22 and 32 respectlvely, and further bolts 24 passlng through allgned apertures ln the vertlcal legs 50 and the vertlcal portlons of the front and rear L-shaped members 44, 45.
Accordlngly, lt wlll be understood that the frame members 16, 20, 30 and 40, each belng generally flat ln form, can ln the dlsassembled condltlon be packed lnto a very compact conflguratlon. In the erected condltlon as shown, these frames are lnterconnected as descrlbed by the bolts 24 to provlde the open ~land cart frame shown. The frame is of llghtwelght constructlon because of the use of hollow tubular . 5 `
frame elements of square cross-sectlon, and ls sufflclently ~tlff and rlgld for lts lntended purpose to support ln lts lower open slded compartment one or two garbage blns 14 or other garbage contalners, and to support ln the compartment~
47, 48, 4g boxes or trays for recyclable materlals.
A palr of wheels 51 are carrled on opposlte ends of an axle 52 whlch passes through bearlng apertures ln the base frame 16, as shown ln Flgure 1, the axle belng at an intermedlate posltlon ln the length of the base frame, dl~placed from the mld-polnt thereof towards the rear. The center of gravlty of the hand cart 10 18 located sllghtly forwardly of the axle 52, so that ln the unattended posltlon, the hand cart wlll rest upon the wheels 52 and also on the feet 25, and accordlngly wlll be qulte stable ln thls posltlon. The wheels 51 extend sufflclently below the frame sectlon 16 that ln the transport posltlon the feet 25 and the lower end of the frame sectlon 30 can both be held well clear of the ground surface e.g. by an average clearance of two or more lnches. In the at rest posltlon the base frame 16 ls approxlmately horlzontal.
When lt 1~ deslred to move the hand cart, lt ls only necessary for the user to tllt the hand cart downwardly at the rear sufflclently to ralse the feet 25 out of engagement wlth the ground surface, whereupon the hand cart can be moved by rolllng lt upon lts wheels 52. Furthermore, slnce there ls only one palr of wheel~ the hand cart wlll be extremely manoeuvrable ln performlng any deslred turns or changes of dlrectlon.
The lndlvldual trays 12 for recyclable materlals are -rectangular open top trays the tops of whlch are surrounded by outwardly pro~ectlng flanges 12a. The relatlve wldths of the compartments 47, 48, 49 are matched to the wldths of the trays 12 such that the flanges 12a wlll rest upon the horlzontal members 44, 43~ 43, 43~ 43, 45. The trays can be slld lnto or removed from these compartments laterally through the open slde~ above the longltudlnal frame member 42. The depth of the trays 12 18 greater than the helght of the vertlcal portlons of the L-shaped members 43, 44, 45 80 that the trays lle behlnd the longltudlnal member g2 when fully ln~erted and are held ln place by the longltudlnal member. The trays have to be llfted sllghtly to allow them to sllde ln and out of thelr respectlve compartments.
The open rectangular handle frame 34 can also be used to ~upport a contalner for recyclable materlal6, but ln thls case the contalner cannot be slld laterally lnto and out of the frame 34, but must be lnserted and removed vertlcally.
As shown ln Flgure 1 the handle frame 34 supports a basket arrangement. In other clrcumstances it may be deslrable to lnclude a rectangular tray slmllar to the trays lZ and havlng a flange pro~ectlng outwardly around lts upper edge. However a tray lnserted ln the handle frame 13 can be conslderably deeper than the trays 12 slnce lt wlll thereby encroach on the lower compartment 13. The tray~ may be provlded to accept any type of recyclable materlal 6uch as gla6s, plastlcs, metal, and paper products.
Whlle a pre6ently preferred embodlment of the lnventlon 18 descrlbed ln the foregolng and lllustrated ln the accompanylng drawlngs, lt wlll be understood that many detalls of the hand cart are susceptible of modlflcatlon. In partlcular the composltlon of the frame elements can be varled wldely, and whlle the present preferred materlal 1B square sectloned hollow tubular steel, other materlals such as alumlnum, plastlcs, could also be sultable. All such modlflcatlons are lntended to be lncluded wlthln the scope of the appended clalms.
