Abstract
A hairdressing comb (10) having a series of spaced pairs of hair lifting teeth (16.1, 16.2), the teeth (16.1, 16.2) of each pair defining between them a gap (18) into which hair can enter. Each hair-lifting tooth (16.6, 16.2) has a hair-lifting formation (20.1, 20.2), the hair-lifting formations (20.1, 20.2) of each pair of teeth (16.1, 16.2) both extending into the corresponding gap (18). The hair-lifting formations (20.1, 20.2) of each pair of teeth (16.1, 16.2) are staggered with respect to one another in the longitudinal direction of the teeth (16.1, 16.2) and one hair-lifting formation (20.2) extends into the gap (18) to a point laterally beyond that to which the other hair-lifting formation (20.2) extends into the gap (18).

Technical Field of the Invention.
THIS INVENTION relates generally to the field of hairJress;ng combs.
More particularly, it relates to a hair.l~-ess;ng comb for use in lifting streaks of hair from a scaled out section of hair during a highlighting or other hairbeautifyingprocedure. Such a p,-oced,lre is, for example, descriL.ed in my US patent 5, 1 52,306.
t3dcl~y,-u.lnd Art US patent 4,996,996 ~Hirsh) ~1;3closes a comb which has a series of hair~ifting teeth, each with a hair~ifting fu~ a~ion which e~"ds at an acute angle from the re~pec~;~/e tooth, the hair~ifting rorn,d~iùns all being on the same side of the teeth. The comb r~ losed in my US patent 5,152,306 improved on this construction by providing one or more teeth without hair~ifting rul-l, IdtiUI 15 li.e.

Disclosure of Invention.
It is an object of the present invention to improve yet further on this construction.
According to the present invention there is provided a hairdressing comb in which the hair~ifting ro,-,~ation of each pair of adjace"t hair~ifting teeth both extend laterally into the gap between the teeth of that pair, the one hair~ifting rur,na~ion of each said pair extending into the respect,i~e gap to a point laterally beyond that to which the other hairlifting ru,-",dLion of that pair e~nds into the respective gap.
W O 95/23536 2 1 ~ ~ 5 7 ~ PC~rnUS95102533 The hair~ifting ru, " ~dl,ions of each said pair of teeth may be ~d~gered with respect to one another, in the longitudinal direction of the teeth.
In one form of the invention the spaces between adjacent pairs of hair~ifting teeth may be unoccupied by other teeth or hair~ifting ru, nnd~ions.
In another form of the invention the spaces betwean adjacent pairs of hair~ifting teeth may be occupied by one or more further teeth, the further teeth being without hair lifting fur,nations.
Brief Desc~;pl.ion of the Drawings.
The invention will now be desc~ ibed in more detail, by way of eA~,ople, with rererence to the acw",pan~ing d~ ;.,ys.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view of a comb in accordance with one embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a side view of a comb in accordance with anL~l.l,er embodiment of the invention;
Figure 3 shows part of the comb of Figure 1, drawn to a larger scale, to illustrate more clearly the tooth configuration of the comb; and Figures 4 and 5 illustrate two alternative tooth configu,-dtions in accorclance with the invention.
Best Mode of Carrying Out the Invention.
Referring first to Figures 1 and 3, rererence numeral 10 generally indicates a comb which has a spine 12, a handle or rat-tail 14, and a series of teeth 16 extending from the spine.
W 0 95/23536 2 1 8 4 5 7 5 P~rnUS95/02533 _ 3 As can best be seen in Figure 3 the teeth 16 are arranged in spaced pairs each pair co,l,pris;ng a tooth 16.1 and a tooth 16.2 the teeth 16.1and 16.2 defin;ug between them a gap 18 into which hair can enter.
- The tooth 16.1 has a first hair~ifting ru,-."d~ion 20.1 which eA~nds 5 at an acute angle laterally into the gap 18 whereas the second tooth 16.2 has a hair~ifting rul -" ,dLion 20.2 which e~nænd at an acute angle laterally into the gap 18.
The two hair~ifting ful mdtions 20.1 and 20.2 are staggered with respecl to one anotl ,er in the longitudinal direction of the teeth and the one hair~ifting rul l l ldl iOI~
eA~nds into the gap. In other words the rul llldlions 20.1 and 20.2 overlap one 10 another.
Retween adjacent pairs of hair~ifting teeth 16.1 16.2 there is a gap 22 which is unoccupied by any other teeth or hair~ifting rul-llldl.ions.
In use when the comb 10 is brought down on a scaled out section of hair po,1ions of the hair will enter into the gaps 18 and other po,~ions of the 15 hair will enter into the gaps 22. When the comb is lifted again those po~ions of hair which have entered into the gaps 18 will be lifted by the hair~ifting ru,-"~dl.ions 20.1 and 20.2. Reca-lse the hair~ifting rul uldlions 20.1 and 20.2 extend into the co,-,-esponding gaps 18 in an overlapF.. ,g " ,anner all the hair that has er,~red into the gap 18 beyond at least the ru,-",dtion 20.1 will be lifted. Those portions of the hair that have er~red into the gaps 22 hu~cvcr will leave the gaps again unhindered when the comb is lifted.
It is to be noted that all that is required to lift precisely measured streaks of hair from a scaled out section of hair during a highlighting or other hair-beautifying procedure is to bring the comb down onto the section of hair and then to lift it again. No 'rocking of the comb tin the length-wise direction of the spinel is necessa.-~ to ensure that all the hair that has entered into the gaps 18 is lifted by the hair~ifting rul mdl.ions 20.1 and 20.2. This significantly imprnves the ease with which even unskilled per~ons can carry out highligh~ i"g or other hair-beautifying procedures which require the lifting out of streaks of hair.
woss/23s36 21 84575 PCT/U~3S~25~3 Referring now to Figure 2, there is shown a comb 10.1 which is similar to the comb 10, the same reference nun)erals being used to indicate the same or equivalent parts. The comb 10.1 differs from the comb 10 in that it is dollh'Q e~ided, having a series of plain teeth 24, without hair~ifting fùrn,~l.ions, which 5 extend from the spine 12 on that side tl,e~or which is opposite the teeth 16.
The configuration illusl -at~d in Figure 4 differs from that illus~-ated in Figure 3 in that the spaG;n~ ben~cn a.ljacent pairs of hair~ifting teeth 16.1, 16.2 is greater, there being, in each space between adjacent pairs of hair~ifting teeth. a single plain tooth 26, i.e. 3 a tooth without hair~ifting fu~ ,iu"s.
The configuration illu~ ~d in Figure 5 differs from that ilhls~ dL~d in Figure 4 in that the spac;ng between adj~cent pairs of hair~ifting teeth 16.1, 16.2 is even g,-ed~r than that in the Figure 4 embodiment, there being, in each space ben~en adjacent pairs of hair~ifting teeth, two plain teeth 28
