TITLE: COIN HOLDER INSERT FOR A CASH TRAY
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention is directed to an insert for use in a cash tray, and in particular, an insert used in a bill slot or compartment of a cash tray to hold coins.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Many countries are presently in the process of replacing printed denominations of money with equivalent valued coins. For example, in Canada the one and two dollar bills have recently been replaced by one and two dollar coins. Similarly, in England the five pound bill has recently been replaced by a five pound coin. In most countries cash registers and in particular, the trays which hold the money in cash registers are sized based upon the number of different denominations of coins and bills. Thus in the United States and Canada cash register trays normally have 4 or 5 compartments along the front edge for holding the common denominations of coins, i.e. pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and in Canada, one dollar coins.
These compartments are generally shaped to have a curved front surface to make it easier to remove the coins from the compartment. The trays also have 4 or 5 compartments located to the rear of the coin compartments for holding the common denominations of bills, one (in the U.S.), two (in Canada), five, ten, twenty, and larger denominations.
The bill compartments are generally rectangular having perpendicular sides and sized to hold the bills in a stack.
If the number of denominations of coins increases, there may not be sufficient compartments available for holding all denominations of coins. In such cases, it may be necessary to mix different denominations of coins in the same compartment which makes it more difficult for the cashier to dispense the correct change. Alternatively, the additional coin denomination may be placed in the JJ-9572CA 2181 S ~ ~
-compartment previously used for the same denomination of bill. However, the shaping of the compartments for bills with perpendicular sides makes it difficult to remove 1.5"
coins placed in a bill compartment. Until cash trays are redesigned for the new mixes of money denominations there r~m~; n~ a need for an easy to use means of storing and dispensing the coins.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In one aspect, the present invention provides for a coin holder for use in a compartment of a cash tray.
The coin holder is sized to fit within the compartment and is provided with at least one slot sized to hold a single denomination of coin on edge.
In another aspect, the present invention provides a cash tray for use in a cash register, the cash tray having a plurality of first compartments for holding coins of various denominations in sorted order along a front edge and a plurality of second compartments for holding bills of various denominations in sorted order located to the rear of the first compartments. At least one of the first or second compartments is provided with a coin holder sized to fit within the compartment and being provided with at least one slot sized to hold a single denomination of coin on edge.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Preferred embodiments of the present invention are illustrated in the attached drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cash register tray containing two embodiments of a coin holder of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the cash register tray of Figure l; and JJ-9572CA 2 1~ 3 Figure 3 is a perspective view of a first em~bodiment of the coin holder of the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
Preferred em~bodiments of the coin holder of the present invention are illustrated in the Figures generally indicated by the numeral 10 and 30. As shown in Figures 1 and 2, coin holders 10 and 30 are adapted for use with a cash tray 12. Cash trays 12 are typically used within a cash register (not shown). Cash tray 12 is typically provided with a series of 4 or 5 first compartments 14 along the front edge of the tray 12 for holding various denominations of coins 16. Compartments 14 are generally sized to hold slightly more than one roll of coins and are provided with an upwardly sloping front surface to allow a cashier to easily remove the necessary number of coins 16 when making change. Located to the rear of the coin compartments 14 are a series of 4 or 5 second compartments 18 for holding bills 20 of various denominations.
Compartments 18 are generally box shaped having generally perpendicular sides 22.
As shown in the Figures in one embodiment coin holder 10 is generally box shaped of a size and shape to fit within one of the bill compartments 18 a cash tray 12.
Coin holder 10 is provided with one or more slots 24 in the top surface 26, the slots 24 preferably being provided to extend along the long dimension of the coin holder 10.
Slots 24 are ~;m~n.~ioned to hold a single denomination of coin 16 st~n~;ng on edge so they may be easily removed from the holder 10 for dispensing. To support the coins 16, slots 24 are preferably sloped downwardly toward the front of the coin holder 10. In this way, the coins 16 slope forwardly and are supported by the front end of the slot 24. While in the figures both the front surface 26 and the coin slots 24 slope forwardly, this is not essential.
Further, the front surface could be flat with no slope and only the slots 24 could slope. To aid in counting of the coins 16, the top surface 26 and slot 24 may be provided with ruled divisions corresponding to the depth of individual coins 16 or equal groups of coins 16 such as every 5 coins.
Coin holder 10 illustrated in the drawings is shown with two slots 24 of equal size for holding a single denomination of coin such as for example a two dollar Canadian coin. In some circumstances the holder 10 may be provided with slots 24 of two different sizes to hold coins of two different denominations. Thus, for example, coin holder 10 may have one slot to hold one dollar coins and another slot to hold two dollar coins. Other combinations are also possible.
As illustrated in the drawings in a second embodiment coin holder 30 may also be adapted for insertion into one of the first compartments 14 for holding coins.
This coin holder 30, similar to the first embodiment of the coin holder 10 is provided with one or more slots 32 for holding of denominations of coins. Similar to the first embodiment, coin holder 30 has a top surface 34 which slopes downwardly towards the front along with the slots 32 to support the coins within the slot. Also similar to the first embodiment, slots 34 may be provided with ruled divisions corresponding to the depth of individual coins or equal groups of coins, such as every five coins.
The coin holder of the present invention allows presently designed cash register trays to be utilized with an increased number of denominations of coin such as are common in many countries by providing inserts for the compartments, either the bill compartment or the coin compartment. Additional denominations of coin may be maintained in sorted order within the cash tray. By maint~;n;ng the coin denominations in sorted order in a position in which they are easily removed from the holder, JJ-9572CA ~ 1 81~ ~ 3 .
the job of the cashier in providing change during a transaction is made much easier. The use of the coin holder of the present invention does not require cash trays for cash registers to be replaced or redesigned to hold the additional denominations of coins.
Although various preferred embodiments of the present invention have been described herein in detail, it will be appreciated by those of skill in the art that variations may be made thereto without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
