Description

~wo vsnssiz 2 i 7 8 812 PcTiGB9moz~as 3 This invention relates to controlling the speed and 4 tension of a web of labels supplied to associated labelling apparatus.

7 Labelling apparatus, such as roll-fed labellers, are 8 commonly provided with reel stands which are adapted to 9 hold a continuous reel of label web intended to be applied to containers, bottles or the like by the 11 apparatus. Reel stand assemblies are used to hold this 12 continuous web and to feed same at the required speed 13 and tension to the other associated apparatus within 14 the labeller. This associated apparatus, in the case of a roll-fed labeller, generally includes a cutter 16 drum and a vacuum drum, which, in use, are desirably 17 rotated at a predetermined speed. It is necessary for 18 effective operation of the labeller to provide the 19 label web to the drums at a proportionate speed.
Failure to do this results in tearing of the web or, 21 alternatively, cutting of the web at inappropriate 22 increments such that individual labels are truncated or 23 damaged.

W0 95116612 PC'TIGB94/02728 1 It is envisaged that films used in relation to the 2 aforementioned labels are likely to be increasingly 3 reduced in thickness as material technology improves 4 and this is also likely to be associated with an , increase in the elasticity of the labelling material.
6 It is therefore of significant importance to provide 7 efficient and reliable means for regulating the speed 8 and tension of the label web supplied to the associated 9 labelling apparatus.
to 11 In the past it has been known to use a weight or mass 12 to provide an appropriate tension. Generally, where 13 this method is used, the use of alternative labelling 14 films require alternative weights or masses to be used in the reel stand assembly. Alternative techniques 16 have involved the use of a spring to tension the web, 17 but this again is a mechanical means which frequently 18 requires the replacement of parts in association with 19 the replacement of labelling films. It has been known to connect these mechanical weights or springs to a 21 dancer arm which is used to correct minor fluctuations 22 in the speed or tension of the web being supplied to 23 the associated labelling apparatus. Movement of the 24 dancer arm in a first direction increases the tension of the supplied web, while movement of the dancer arm 26 in the opposition direction is adapted to reduce the 27 tension of the supplied web. The mean and desired 28 tension of the web on the dancer arm is counter-29 balanced by the aforesaid mechanical weight or spring.
31 According to the present invention, there is provided a 32 regulating means for regulating the speed and tension 33 of continuous label web for supply to associated 34 labelling apparatus, wherein said regulating means comprises an arm adapted to move in a first direction -WO 95/16612 2 i 7 8 8 i 2 1 and a second direction, wherein said arm includes 2 tension control means and is adapted to grip said 3 continuous web while said web is moving, wherein said . 4 tension control means comprises a pneumatic cylinder with a variable regulated air supply, wherein said 6 cylinder is adapted to forcibly encourage said arm in 7 said first direction, and wherein tension of said 8 continuous web forcibly encourages said arm in said 9 second direction, wherein said arm moves in the direction most encouraged and consequentially regulates 11 the speed and tension of the web supplied.

13 Preferably, said regulating means further includes a 14 reel stand assembly having one or more reel bearing housing assemblies for supporting a respective reel of 16 continuous label web, wherein each said reel bearing 17 housing assembly includes braking means for retarding 18 the speed of rotation of a respective said reel, 19 wherein said braking means is controlled by control means including a rotary sensor communicating with said 21 arm, such that when said arm is caused to move in said 22 first direction the movement is detected by said rotary 23 sensor and a signal is generated by said control 24 apparatus which is adapted to activate said braking means.

27 Preferably, said reel bearing housing assemblies each 2$ further include a motor adapted to drive said reel, 29 wherein when said arm is caused to move in said second direction said rotary sensor generates a signal to said 31 motors, such that said motors accelerate the rotational 32 velocity of the respective said reel.

34 An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying Figures, in which:-3 Fig. 1 is a plan view of a reel stand assembly;
4 Fig. 2 is a part sectional elevation through A-A , g of the reel stand assembly shown in Fig.,l; and 6 Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the reel stand assembly of Fig. 1.

9 Referring firstly to Fig. 1, a reel stand assembly 1 comprises two label reel-bearing housing assemblies 2a, 11 2b. Each reel bearing housing assembly 2 is adapted to 12 support a reel of continuous label web 15 which, in 13 use, is guided through a first guide roller 3 around a 14 gripping means 4 on an arm 5 and thereafter again through a further guide roller 6. The label web 15 is 16 then fed to associated labelling apparatus which may 17 include a cutter drum and vacuum drum. As in the lg embodiment shown, it is common to provide two reel 19 bearing housing assemblies 2a, 2b to enable quick changeover time when one label web has been used. The 21 arm 5'is adapted to pivot- about the point 10 such that 22 it may rotate in a first direction, represented by the 23 arrow A, or in a second direction, represented by the 24 arrow B. When the arm 5 rotates in the first direction A, any slack in the continuous label web 15 is taken 26 up. On the other hand, when the arm 5 rotates in the 27 second direction B, the tension of the web is reduced.
28 For this reason, the arm 5 is frequently called a 29 dancer arm or a tension control arm as it dances in both first and second directions about a mean or 31 equilibrium position X in order to regulate the tension 32 of the web supplied xo associated labelling apparatus.

It will be appreciated that the web 15 which moves 217 8 812 P~IGB94/02728 1 around the gripping means 4 applies a force on the arm 2 5 which encourages the arm 5 in said second direction 3 B. This is required to be counter-balanced by a 4 tension control means, which in the invention, 5 comprises an actuator such as a pneumatic cylinder 7 6 with a variable regulated air supply. The cylinder 7 7 encourages the arm in the first direction A to counter-8 balance the tension which is inherent in the web 15 9 which encourages the arm 5 in the second direction B.

Thus, the mean force applied by the cylinder 7 is 11 regulated by the air supply to maintain the arm 5 in an 12 equilibrium position X.

14 It is appreciated in the invention that it is important to supply the label web to the associated labelling 16 apparatus at a constant speed and tension. However, 17 due to several variables, it is necessary to regulate 18 the speed and tension of the supplied label as the 19 label peeling off the reel on the reel-bearing housing assembly 2 may do so at a tension which is greater or 21 smaller than the desired tension. When the tension of 22 the web peeling off the reel is lower than that which 23 is desired, the force applied by the actuator on the 24 arm 5 is caused to exceed the force applied from the tension of the web around the gripping~means 4 and the 26 arm 5 is thereby caused to move in the first direction 27 A. However, as this movement of the arm 5 takes place, 28 any slack in the web 15 is taken up and the tension of 29 the web then proceeding to the guide roller 6 is maintained at the optimum level. Conversely, when the 31 tension of the web peeling off the reel is greater than 32 the desired level, the force applied by the cylinder 7 33 on the arm 5 is less than the force applied on the ' 34 gripping means 4 by the tension in the web 15 and consequentially the arm 5 is caused to move in said WO 95116612 PC'TIGB94f02728 second direction B. This movement reduces the tension 2 in the continuous label web fed through the guide 3 roller 6 to the associated labelling apparatus.

When the arm 5 is caused to remain unduly in a position 6 either in the first direction or the second direction 7 away from the equilibrium position R, the air pressure g supplied to the pneumatic cylinder 7 is regulated to 9 correct this state, such that the arm 5 is encouraged to return towards the mean equilibrium position X. It 11 is realised that the arm 5 may only move within certain 12 limits and the invention is preferably caused to 13 operate with the arm in close proximity to this 14 equilibrium position R.
16 Other apparatus may be incorporated in the regulating 17 means 1 to assist in the control or regulation of the 18 tension and speed of the label web supplied to the i9 associated labelling apparatus. This may include, for example, a braking means 8 on each respective reel 21 bearing housing assembly 2 for slowing down the speed 22 of rotation of the label reels. The brake 8 may be of 23 any appropriate type, although electro-mechanical 24 brakes are suggested as preferable. The brakes 8, in the embodiment shown, are adapted to be activated when 26 the arm 5 is caused to travel in the first direction A.
27 As explained above, this occurs when the speed of the 28 reel is above that which is desired and the tension in 29 the web is therefore reduced. A rotary sensor 9, such as a potentiometer, is adapted to sense the movement of 31 the arm 5 in the first direction A and thereupon to , 32 transmit a signal via control apparatus 11 which is 33 adapted to activate the brake 8. Once the arm 5 has 34 returned to the equilibrium position X, the sensor 9 then sends a further signal to the control apparatus 11 _WO 95/16612 PCTIGB94102728 1 which is adapted to deactivate the brake 8.

3 Further apparatus may be provided which provide 4 regulating or controlling means to produce the opposite effect. A motor, such as a servomotor 14, may be 6 attached to the reel-bearing housing assembly 2; the 7 motor 14 being adapted to drive the reel 15 and, when 8 appropriate, increase the rotational velocity of the 9 reel. This means that when the continuous label web is supplied from the reel at an insufficient speed or 11 velocity, the servomotor 14 can be accelerated such 12 that the reel supplies the web at a greater speed.

13 Again, the arm 5 would be caused to move in the second 14 direction B and this would be sensed by a rotary sensor 9, such as the potentiometer shown, which would send a 16 signal via the control apparatus 11 to the servomotor 17 14. The servomotor 14 may incorporate the electro-18 mechanical brake 8 or, alternatively, the brake 8 may 19 be separate.

.

21 It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that 22 the invention provides a means for variably controlling 23 the supply of label web to associated labelling 24 apparatus with far greater control than that which has been known in the past. The variable control is 26 applied to both the dancer arm 5 and the reel-bearing 27 housing assemblies 2 and is adapted to both increase 28 and decrease the tension and/or speed of the web in 29 accordance with optimum levels.

31 Further modifications and improvements may be 32 incorporated without departing from the spirit or scope 33 of the invention herein intended.
